I'm just getting round to flicking my PAL Xbox into HD mode, and was wondering...
Why should 480i/p be better than the output res I get by default? ie PAL - 576i
Sure 480p is progressive scan, and not interlaced - but surely it's still at a lower resolution? Which must be bad?
ALSO!
Why do Xbox games get sold as "HD compatible" or whatever in the UK (at 480p), and yet PAL UK Xbox's can't do HD by default? (until you switch to NTSC mode).
How can anyone with an unmodded Xbox ever play original games in HD mode? WTF

For your first question, 480p is technically higher than 576i because it is progressive scan, which means that the entire screen is relit each pass, while interlaced is only half the screen getting relit. So basically, 480p = 640x480, and 480i = 320x240, which is a fairly large difference.
I have no idea why they sell PAL games in HD if the Xbox can't output that resolution.

480i is 640 x 240 at 60 fields (half frames) per second rendering odd and even scan lines alternatively.

Oh. I seriously wish tv resolutions worked like computer monitor ones.
