[QUOTE]
A proposed amendment to the current copy protection license governing DVDs would completely ban all DVD backups, and prevent DVD playback without the DVD disk being present inside the drive.

The amendment is currently being considered by the Content Protection Advisory Council (CPAC) of the DVD CCA. If enacted, it would become binding in 18 months from the date on which the CCA notified its licensees, which include DVD hardware and software manufacturers.

The amendment reads:
"6.4. Certain Requirements for DVD Products. DVD Products, alone or in combination with other DVD Products, shall not be designed to descramble scrambled CSS Data when the DVD Disc containing such CSS Data and associated CSS Keys is not physically present in the DVD Player or DVD Drive (as applicable), and a DVD Product shall not be designed to make or direct the making of a persistent copy of CSS Data that has been descrambled from such DVD Disc by such DVD Product."

why don't we ban knives too, because they can kill if used the wrong way..and how about we ban blank cds, because they can be used inappropriately as well, how about we completely deter creativity and just ban all new technology..that'd be a surefire way to prevent piracy, eh?

LOL good luck getting the rest of the world to go along with ya MPAA

How do you enforce that? I have a ton of children's DVDs with no copy protection at all. And, as a collector of DVD's I have many 1$ DVDs that also have no CSS. They are so cheap they skip like crazy unless backed up to a better quality DVD-R.

There would have to be a grandfather clause.

Also, it seems this would not affect macrovision circumvention. This deters piracy none, and continues to stick it to the man.

If backups are illegal, then only illegals will have backups. sad.gif

And this is going to have an effect how? We'll just figure out a way to modify future devices. It's not like they're going to be updating every single present dvd player and they'll have to ensure that the new movies will work on old drives.

I'm confused as to why they'd be doing this.

These People obviously has never had a DVD scratch or Jusat stop working. Or its because they can pull money outta there assholes and buy 10 more.

I have a 3 year old that can work the dvd player and does! I have copied every single one of his 20$ thomas the train dvds and no I will not give him the real copies. And yes I make about 2 a week.... If this were the case, hell if Id ever buy a thomas the train.... He wants to switch copies every 15 minutes and damn if Im going to do that either... hell I scratch my own 360 games enough...

If people are are making their own backsup or download... they removed the CSS protection on the computer side when their ripping it?

So what good is it going to do to put those restrictions on a dvd player, if the copies dvd has no CSS on it? It'd be the same as a home movie.

Theres so many dvd burners and what not out there now.. that the cats already out of the bag.

Glad I live in Canada.

btw.. as will all US law.. good luck passing it in the house and senate in the same format smile.gif

Even IF this passes and they start making dvd players and burners unable to play backups, someone will come up with a way around it. Firmware upgrades or whatever. If the dumb ass politicians and powers that be get this passed that would be something! Maybe they should find better causes to rally behind. I don't know....maybe getting gas below 3.00$ a gallon! Well, guess that's what we get for putting a Texas oil man in charge! tongue.gif

usually i get pissed when i read articles like this, but this one made me laugh.

Hmm:

As has been said: They have never had a dvd scratch...or...

they are already so filthy stinking rich that they can just go buy brand new dvds when ever one gets the tiniest scratch....

or...

They've never seen a dvd, never used a cd... have no idea what these things do or are subjected to...

I think this last one may be likely...it's the incapable and inept making rules for things they know nothing about.

Won't happen.

it whont pass thats a blatent fair use volition.

Who sponsored or wrote this ammendment? Im sick of the annonymousness / low profiles that people who pump crap like this out enjoy. They should have to answer to the public. This just like the RealID law is a slap in the face of every citizen of US.
KFelon
This would make home movies useless and illegal. huh.gif

Seriously though, it would be impossible to prevent a media center pc from playing recordable media or files from a hard drive.

The internet used to be so fun back in the day..."fuck sega" "napster" and "early xbs"...but now it just sucks.
Fuck it, I'm going back outside and tripp'n.

Is it just me or does this really not make sense. If there's no DVD in the drive how you gonna get playback anyway? blink.gif Either way this is laughable and will never happen.

How in the hell will this work for home movies? You would like to send out the christmas tapes to your family but of course that will be illegal to do now.. i wouldnt be surprised if whoever goes through with this enforces dvd players to HAVE a broadband connection or something so if one backup is detected theres something that goes out to the assholes who made this amendment and they will send out the fbi or something on you.

Yet another reason why we should simply shoot all politicians and put real people in charge of the government. Whatever happened to government by the people and for the people? Now it's just for rich douchebags. HSDEMONZ '08.

You guys are having so much fun getting angry at politicians you didn't even read the article. The proposed amendment is to the DVD CCA license, not a currently enacted US law.

As this guy said, the people who license the DVD copy protection, CSS, are changing their license so that you can't make a licensed piece of software or hardware to rip DVDs. This has no effect on anyone here really, because CSS is completely cracked, and there are millions of pieces of software that can remove it.
Arvarden
The proposed amendment is 10+ years late. Disk based media will become virtually obsolete in a decade or so as all of our media will be digitized with new restrictions on it's use.

Rotating-disc-media is so retro. Bring on the solid-state revolution.

yes, this is the real information behind this "amendment" and it would not affect us as much as the general public or the hardware/software manufacturers that deal with dvd media. plus i watch all my backups on XBMC so i don't really care

i, too, cannot wait until optical disc media is both old and as useful as cassette tapes - bring me digital content on flash chips or via download. i hate using dvd players because of the slow disc and menu loading times and having to physically load each dvd - thus another reason why i prefer XBMC...i love being able to jump to any scene in any movie of my collection in seconds - all from my couch or bed
Nocturnal151
I agree, I havn't watched a DVD in so long, all my media is brought to me courtesy of the internet and XBMC!!! As long as their is always a way to rip dvd's to Xvid and play it back on Xbox I'm a happy man!!!!
Tcornwall
For all the people worried about not being able to watch scratched movies. The solution to this is to have the manufacturers of the DVD's replace scratched DVD's. All you need to do is ship the DVD back, pay $1 or $2 for the product to be shipped back. End of story.

Take care of your stuff and it'll be okay. Or you can invest in a DVD/CD scratch fixer that usualy fixes any scratches. Misuse is your own fault.

not necessarily...many people allow their family to use their discs too - and you cannot control children with optical media...and even those adults who are extremely careful, things happen - we should all have the right to protect the media that we purchase...

They're gonna came with a workaround to make every mate in your family to buy the pretty same kind of camcorder with Serial number in a sequence (not greater than 20 numbers) so the disk or even tape could be playable.....

This is the worst, I'm voting current "DRM" in bluerays and HDs will remain in this world...

There's always a way to undo their efforts.

Gonna tell this joke to some pals.
