i use xbmc as my default dashboard and renamed avalaunch.xbe to default.xbe because of the the comfort.
in the app starting menu in xbmc i don't have to browse through the avalaunch folder to start avalaunch.xbe. instead, i can only click on the folder to start avalaunch.

it works without any problems. are there any negative aspects?

As far as I know, there are no negative side effects. Renaming should not affect any aspect of performance of the dash. This is as long as you don't rename the the folders in such directory.
