i dont know if its my modchip or what, but sometimes when i boot it it would freeze on the screen that appears right before the dashboard loads. Sometimes it would freeze sometimes it would boot right up no problems. what can cause this? my xbox used to work before without this problem, but not it recently started doing it.

Probably lose wire/pinheader connections, especially D0, check them all..if not maybe a lose hard drive or DVD connection..
