i have a tv that occasionally fades to black for about 5 minutes max and then fades back into the picture. i know its the tv because when it has done this i turned on the dvd player and it still was black. any ideas? im guessing the tv is on its way out.

its a CRT toshiba. not sure which model. its at least 7 years old

when it fades does the whole picture slowly go black or does it shrink down to a dot in the center?

if it's the former it's a problem with the high voltage line, if it's the latter it's a problem with the yoke.

either way you're better off just getting a new TV. sleep.gif

can the high voltage line be repaired in anyway?

The problem is poor soldered connections to the Heaters.
Resolder the CRT base and resolder the 3 pin plug at the side of the line transformer. The heaters are fed from an overwind on the Line Transformer.
The heaters are not high voltage.
The effect you see on the screen is as if someone has turned the brightness right down till the picture blacks out. if you look at the heaters inside the CRT neck you will see them go out.
If the HV was disappearing you would hear the eht shut down(decay) as the line drive collapsed.
The poor connections you should be able to see with a magnifier.
Very common. Easy to fix for a Tech or non tech if you know where to look
