As far as I'm aware you need the HDD.

I tried Fable last night without a HDD and it told me I needed one.

And this was on a un-modded 360.

I've got a pro with Extreme 5.2 and I can play xbox1 games. I'm a newbie but I wasn't aware about any relations between xbox1 games and the hdd. If I'm not wrong there's still a compatibility list for all xbox1 titles that are playable on the 360 and you should have the proper firmware as well. I played halo2 on my xbox360, that's for sure.
If u have the same fw I could try to unplug the hdd and see if it's still working.....as soon as my baby comes back from repair!!
btw, I'm sure lots of people should know about this

I also want to play halo 2 on my 360.
Okay,itīll be great if you can test this without the hdd
But as far as i know, if you want to play an xbox 1 game on the console you must first install an compatibility update for each game. And thats why you need the hdd.

You 100% MUST have the HDD to play Xbox games. The Backward-Compat emulation software is stored on the HDD.

any 360 will play xbox1 games. you must have a harddrive. firmware doesn't matter because it will either play or it won't. firmware doesn't make games work that wouldn't otherwise. the only thing the firmware will let you do as far as backwards compatibility goes, is to play backups of games on the compatibility list.
