I don't have the right type of motherboard for the firmware mod so I need to know if there are alternatives.
xlordx
i think its the dvd rom drive that you need to worry about not the mobo i could be wrong though.

Yes, you are correct, its the dvd drive that matters.

Unless he is talking about using the KK exploit, in which that case has to do with your kernal

it's probably the kk exploit... i heard you needed some type of motherboard for it though....???
what kind of dvd drive do you need?
how safe is the modding?

the king kong hack requires you to have a flashed drive, and a certain kernel revision of your dashboard. if you meet those requirements, you load a hacked copy of king kong with the exploit embedded into it.

for a firmware flash, you just hook it up to your pc and flash away. its safer then a modchip.

I think he's saying is there another way to mod a xbox 360 besides flashing firmware because he doesnt have the correct motherboard to flash his 360.The other alternatives are installing a mod chip.
commandersafi
Other than the 2 ways mentioned (firmware flash & KK exploit), there is no other types of mods

so is this considerred a softmod?
what do you mean a hacked copy of king kong?
commandersafi
Well, i guess you can consider it a software mod because you dont have to modify the hardware in any way.

A "hacked copy of kk" is a kk disk that you back up and apply a patch to and reburn and use that to boot linux
kernando
& how does it work with Live? Will I be banned? Can I play games online? Can I only play retail games?
-PK-
kk exploit is only used to boot linux and homebrew apps, this requires a console with a modded dvd firmware and an exploitable kernal (4532/4548 for now). The kk exploit is not really feasible for everyone yet, so don't expect the homebrew variety of xbox1.

The ixtreme dvd drive firmware is used for typical modding (to load backups), this lets you still play all your original games & use xblive (with caution). This is what most people do and I think this is what you're looking for.

Specifically:
Samsung
1) most Samsung ms25's can be flashed with a few common onboard sata chipsets.
2) ms25 hardware v4.x-5.x and all ms28's will require a pci sata card with the via 6421L or 6421A chipset (or an onboard via chipset).

Hitachi
1) Hitachi 0078FK or less can be flashed with most chipsets.
2) Hitachi 79's require a 79 passkey modchip so that you can flash (read/write) to the drive in a similar fashion as the 78's.

Benq, almost but not yet flashable (waiting on firmware).

so if Iam correct,
You first have to install the ixtreme dvd firmware and then you can use the kk exploit (if you have the right type motherboard)?

My friend has a modchip in his xbox360 why dont you try that?
-PK-
Ironically, some modchips are slightly more likely to get detected and banned than simply flashing the drive's existing fw. And the other modchips offer no additional protection over drive flashing and are more complex & time consuming to do.

When new detections come out Samsungs get updated fw first, then Hitachi's. If you did get a modchip you would want to make sure you can put the ixtreme fw on there instead of their modchip brand fw (thinking of globe360 fw), as if you were flashing to the drive itself, so you can keep up to date. No modchip fw means no special modchip features, which is why you're better off just flashing the drive since it's easier to do.

Also the kk exploit isn't required at all for modding, it's only required if you want to run linux.

i dont get this part but thats because of my bad english (Iam dutch)

But i gues your right about the easy detection with modchips.
-PK-
I mean modchips that have their own type of fw (I'm not sure which ones do) are going to be way behind in security compared modchips that can be flashed with the ixtreme fw. Because ixtreme fw is updated right after the new detections are known (quick releases).

Any modchip that can run ixtreme fw will not have any real features, it might have two flash banks and a switch, but nothing more than that. Modchips with special features would require their own fw to manage the added features, this kind of fw would be updated less regularly than ixtreme and get you banned.

So since a modchip is only useful if it can run ixtreme fw, why not just flash the drive with ixtreme fw and save yourself some soldering smile.gif
