I just updated the Ndure 3.0 installer to 3.1.. The main change is the Nkpatcher 11_U04.. xman954's new nkpatcher warrented a new release.. main changes are:

NKpatcher 11_U04: Better nkpatcher with more functions. This version of nkpatcher is more modular. Its possible to change LED/Video/Fan/dashboard path/Retail-Basic settings on the fly by placing runtime config files in E:\NKP11\ folder. For a better description and changelog read NKP11_U04 readme.

Basic/Retail Option: Switching between Basic and Retail is done by nkpatcher. Setup creates same set of files for both installation.

XBOXHDM Installer: Fixed xboxhdm script bugs.

Clock Check: Clock check is disabled by default. It can be enabled by selectiong "enable clock check" option in softmod and nkpatcher settings.

eeprom backup: instead of evox.. this release includes eeprom_reader by xman954.. Which will backup the eeprom in E:\NKP11\ folder.. virtual eeprom also been moved to E:\NKP11\ so just backing up the eeprom will take care of virtual eeprom.

Ndure Installer: Completely recoded. Its more flexible and esier to use. No need to select kernel separately for font and ST.DB, selecting kernel once will reflect changes on other settings.

hey im new here so go easy!!
i have modded a few xboxs now over the years but am doing a few more, due to lack of funds and blank cd's i have made my usb flash drive bootable with "unetbootin-windows-282.exe" it boots fine but it cant find the cd "cos its not there lol"

anybody got any sugestions!!!! i would like to be able to change the scripts myself but not so confident is this going to be a mammoth task or is it going to be as simple as changing paths in some file to look for usb instead of cd dev!! ph34r.gif biggrin.gif hey my first post on here i normaly find what i want without asking ;-)
kingroach
There is no direct port of xboxhdm for usb.. you can check out this usb edition:

hey guys,
i got the hotswap timing thing down, but was struck by an idea yesterday.

the thing is that the other day i saw a SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 adapter.
i was just wondering if i could hotswap the xbox hdd drive to my pc's usb port using this adapter, and run Xplorer360 to tranfer the ndure files over.

if this is possible, now hotswapping will work on laptops too happy.gif

i'll be getting the adapter soon, so i'll try this out soon.
any ideas?
kingroach
it could work but you will need to keep powering the xbox hard drive using theh xbox power source.

Ok well I tried to get UDDAE working to boot the Xbox dash on tray open.

It has never worked for me on the default install of Ndure3.1 retail.
I could get to Xbox dash through the menu but every time I tried the tray open boot I got error 21.

I followed the advice on the previous page copying with virtual C disable, enie.xtf before xbox.xtf... well upon reboot it goes to a blank screen and I cant access ftp or boot disks it would seem, what happened?

I might just forget the dual boot, seems more trouble than its worth, looks like I will have to crack the Xbox open again.

Hi, help please! I need to enable rgb (aka vga) output so I can connect my xbox to a projector using a VGA or RGB input (either one would work). I have used Ndure 3.1 with xboxhdm to softmod my box. The options I selected in Ndure were just the NkPatcher VGA, and Ndure Basic since I don't need to boot to the retail dash.
I think I got Ndure installed correctly on the Xbox: I can boot to UnleashX, but when I connect the hi-def pack to the RGB input or my Frozen Cable (VGA) to the VGA input of my projector I'm only seeing the green signal. This would be ok if all I wanted to play was Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, I guess, biggrin.gif but I was kind of hoping to be able to see red and blue sometimes too!

I FTPd to the Xbox and checked the E:/NKP11 folder and saw that Ndure did create a video.bin file containing just the digit 3, which as I understand it should tell the bios to output an RGB signal. I also added that .bin file (I forget the exact filename) to disable the eeprom protection and then used the MS Dashboard to enable 480p, 720p, and 1080i output. Everything is still just green. I'm hoping there's something simple I missed that someone could help me with.

Thanks!
Andy

I have Ndure 3.0 softmod on my hdd. Can I update to 3.1 by launching the ndure script from xbrowse in xboxhdm?

And then I just need to copy my entier backup folder to nkp11 and I should be able to access my ms dash right?

Well, I am trying to figure out how I can access my MS dash and I was following this thread: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?sho...664143&st=0 because I am in a similar situation.

Hello all,

I need your help!

I just tried to install xbmc on an old xbox via a hotswap and was using the Ndure 3.1 installer followed by xboxhdm to make the bootable iso. I set the right kernel version for my xbox.

Everything seemed to go well with the hotswap until I noticed ndure give the following message:

"copying ndure files - no such file or directory

cp /cd/ndure/c/media/*
cp /cd/ndure/c/bios/*
cp /cd/ndure/e/dash/* "

When I reconnected the hdd back to the xbox & rebooting, the xbox gets stuck at the green xbox screen and doesn't go ahead.

I googled some more and realized the Ndure 3.1 installer I have is very very small, just 16 MB, and the linux.iso I get is only 48MB, it should actually be about 400MB.

I re-ran the Ndure3.1 installer and it says it needs about 400MB but puts down only about 48 MB. So I am definitely missing some files here and don't know what.

Can you please help me create a complete Ndure3.1 setup? I'm new to modding and this is my first mod attempt.

Is there any hope for my xbox?

Cheers,
ibook
Heimdall
Kingroach is fine at 16MB. When you run Kingroach it makes a C folder of ~364MB and an E folder of ~15.4MB, and you use those to make the iso. If it doesn't do that then try downloading Kingroach again.
ibook
Thanks Heimdall, the sizes were what I needed to confirm. I had run NDure in a VMware virtual machine with limited disk space the first time, I tried it on a pc now.

I downloaded NDure 3.1 again and tried the process and I get a 400 MB iso file as you said.

Now my problem is the xbox itself. I had used the audio exploit to unlock the hard drive before. How do I unlock it now? It just boots up and stays at the green X screen. If I press the eject button it seems to flicker/blank the screen and returns to the X screen. I can't access the original xbox dash to play the audio file and unlock the drive.

My options are:

- Should I try hot swapping on the green X screen and re-installing Ndure ? How can I know if the drive is unlocked in this case?

- Should I do a hot swap and simply copy the missing directories to the xbox drive, that were not copied before?

Any suggestions?

Cheers,
ibook
Heimdall
You need to disconnect the DVD drive to force Error 12, then hotswap the hard drive around the time the Microsoft logo appears, but before the error screen appears.

How you replace the files depends on how you built the xboxhdm disc, but either way you replace all of the files. If you put the stock C in linux/C and the ndure files in linux/ndure then do it as described in this post.

If you built the Kingroach files on top of the stock C, then you put the complete C (stock + Kingroach) in linux/C and the Kingroach E in linux/E, run xboxhdm, select option 1 - boot VGA Console, then type xboxhd, then select option 2 - Rebuild C partition on existing Xbox drive.
ibook
Thanks Heimdall, sounds like there is hope for my xbox after all!

Where are the "stock C" files? I downloaded the Slayer & AID iso's and see:
- a C folder under "System\All" on Slayer
- an ms-c.zip file under Files\Dash in AID

Are any of these the "stock C" that you mentioned?

The process I followed to build xboxhdm was: run the ndure3.1 installer, install it to "xboxhdm\linux\ndure", then run make-iso-win.bat to create the iso.

So to confirm, I think I should follow the first technique you mentioned?

I'm afraid I did not understand the second technique you mentioned "If you built the Kingroach files on top of the stock C", not sure how to do that.

Cheers,
ibook

PS: I forgot to mention in my first post that during the initial install, ndure displayed a message that it was creating a backup, I don't know where on the disk this backup is, or if it can be restored.
Heimdall
Yes, they are the stock C files, and yes, use the first technique.
ibook
Heimdall you are a genius!! I did exactly as you said and it worked ! :-)

Once I had the orange unleashx screen I replaced the default dash with xbmc. I love the network streaming!

The next step is to do a fan mod and upgrade the hdd. Is there any way of getting the eeprom through a software utility or is this only possible by hooking into the xbox hardware?

I noticed that I cannot boot into the MS dash anymore, even by booting with the eject button. In case I want to play the occasional xbox game is there any way of doing so?

Thank you again for your help. You have saved my xbox!

Cheers,
ibook
Heimdall
You can get the eeprom from Config Magic, or xman954's eeprom dumper, or by running Evox dash as an application.

You aren't getting dual boot because you selected too many options when you built the Kingroach files! To get dual boot to MS Dash to work just run E:\ndts\default.xbe (the LED will turn red) then select Install Menu - NDURE Retail.

You should also boot normally, and copy the stock 5960 C dash to the C drive (which should now be the empty shadow C), then you'll be able to get to the MS dash directly from the XBMC file manager.

But you don't NEED to do any of that, because the Xbox will run games without booting to the dash - just put the game disc in the drive and reboot, or run it from the XBMC file manager, or from the icon on the XBMC main screen (not sure if that last one appears on all skins).

Or, once you have the large disk fitted use DVD2Xbox to copy the games to the F/G partitions, then you can run them direct from XBMC. smile.gif

The next step is to do a fan mod
NKPatcher does allow you to set the fan speed from 20% to 100% (keep in mind if you add/change fans as you can control them)
ibook
Thanks heimdall and xman954,

I opted not to keep the MS dash in the end since I can run the games with Xbmc, as heimdall said. I also found the Xbmc settings that let me control the fan speed - at 40% its hardly noticeable so I might not have to do the fan mod after all! I've backed up the eeprom with Config Magic.

While I'm waiting for the new hard drive, I might cut up one of my broken game controllers & splice the connector onto a normal USB cable, so I can plug in a portable external drive right into the front panel of the Xbox.

You guys rock!

I dont know what I did wrong but I try to say everything here.

1. I downloaded xboxhdm1.9 and unzipped it.
2. I installed Ndure 3.1 with all options but no audio exploit and nkpatcher 0.6
3. Then I moved ndure C and E contents to XBOXHDM C and E folder
4. I made bootcd image called linux.iso
5. I did burn it
6. I then rebootet and did hit pause on system load.
7. Removed xbox dvd readers ide and power. then booted xbox with error 12, removed ide from hard disk and connectect it to pc IDE1 where cdrom is IDE1 slave (I dont have IDE2 but I have 6 sata2 ports).
8. I hit space to continue system bios bootup and linux cd did load XBOXHDM linux VGA console.

At the linux console...

It suggested to type "xboxhdm" or "xbrowser"

Both gives me this error:

CODE
looking for cd-rom in dev/hda
no disk drive found of dev/hda
looking for cd-rom in dev/hdb
no disk drive found of dev/hdb
looking for cd-rom in dev/hdc
no disk drive found of dev/hdc
no disk drive found of dev/hda
please load linux cd and try again

So what should I do? Many posts says that I need 2 IDE surfaces. But I have only 6 sata ports, and 1 IDE port.

So if the linux will load from USB stick may I try that and how should I do it?
kingroach
disable sata in bios or unplug the sata cables and try again..
Jeroi
I will try that.

I still wonder, if xboxhdm linux is someone making usb bootable version available as old ide is fading away due to SATA2.

So someone could make usb version of xboxhdm and ndure, also support for ide to sata adaptor, so that you could use xbox hdd with sata adapor on you're machine and still do the hotswap exploit.

Also honestly getting rid of this remove sata disks and use only xbox hd with cdrom bug. bootcd should work the way that it is really the same where you put your hdd on aslong te hdd is primary, and with all your else hardware connected to other ports. Xboxhdm should be aware how much harddisks you have and where your cdrom is connected without problems.

Sorry bout that let me ask a new question:

Does ndure3.1 support xboxhdm2?

I mean on this site talk about xboxhdm2 it says I need to have eeprom. But I am doing my first mod to clean xbox, so I dont have my eebrom.bin. So can I use xboxhdm2 the same way as xboxhdm with ndure3.1? If yes, could some one point me is there any new things I need to do with this setup?
Heimdall
QUOTE

The two are broadly unrelated. Kingroach NDURE generates a softmod file set, xboxhdm / xboxhdm2 are tools for building an Xbox disk - and can be used to put any content you like on the disk, including a Kingroach NDURE file set.

As far as I am aware you can hotswap and use xboxhdm2 without the eeprom. In fact, reading the thread, xboxhdm2 won't lock / unlock disks anyway, so the eeprom is of no real use!

I am getting the same message on my Abit AB9 Pro board that i am trying to use to mod my xbox.

I honestly do not know what to do from here. I was hoping to get this all finished tonight but it looks like that will not be happening.

I have disconnected all of my drives (8 SATA ones) and turned off the SATA stuff in the BIOS. The problem is that if i turn off the SATA controllers i can no longer boot from the CD drive. I have to enable one of them to get it to work. I set the SATA controller to IDE mode but that makes no difference.

I guess i will be going out and finding a very cheap and very old motherboard tomorrow unless someone can come up with a way to get this working.

Hi there.

I have just softmodded my xbox with using this thread " Ndure Softmod Through Xboxhdm, The free way to mod the Xbox" http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=496263. EDIT: corrected this to the thread I actually used. SORRY!! lol

I have some issues. First it did install somewhat correctly. The installer did fail on copying and setting up the c:\shadowc folder as it couldnt find an *.img file to copy from the cd. They are there on the cd I checked.

Only file in the shadowc folder is shadowc.img. filler2.img and filler3.img as well as RESC folder are missing.

Would copying these files into the c:\shadowc folder fix this.

I cannot boot the ms dash by pressing the eject button. Jumps strait to the unleashx dash.

My next step is upgrading to a 40gig hdd i have lying about, dont need anything bigger for my needs.

Cheers.
Leenuks <--- cant believe this nick wasnt already taken.. hehehe.

Edit again: sorry if i posted in wrong thread. I really should of posted in the thread I listed above... eeeep! But it does have to do with Ndure 3.1 i guess.

Did you select "Install NDURE Basic" when you built the Kingroach files? If you did, you can fix it by running System - Ndure Toolset - Install Menu - NDURE Retail.

When you run File Explorer from the main UnleashX menu, can you see folders Bios and shadowC on the C partition?
Leenuks
I did install the Ndure basic setup.

The bios and shadowc folders are not there.

I ran the Retail setup from the xbox. The folders then appeared. I rebooted and they vanished again.

I loaded a game and ejected it, the xbox went to MSdash. All my music is gone from the menu.

It now boots with a blue dash and a rotating logo on the left of screen, menu rotates on the right of the logo.
Much different to the first dash I saw before doing retail setup.

I tried to load the MS dashboard from the menu. I get an error which says, "Unable to launch "c:\xb0xdash.xbe." File does not exist.

Might have a corrupt install. Off to bed now but Ill take some pics tomorrow and post.

EDIT: Pressing power button loads the blue dash I mentioned above. Pressing eject now loads MSdash.

OK bedtime.

Thanks
Leenuks
Heimdall
Your Xbox is now behaving normally. The bios and shadowC folders are on the real C drive, but when you rebooted the shadow C kicked in, and they disappeared. The dash you are now seeing is UnleashX - the one you should have seen in the first place.

You have no sounds because the shadow C partition is empty, or the Audio files from the stock MS dash on the shadow C are missing. Get hold of Slayers, CASH or AID, and use Qwix to extract the stock 5960 C dash files and folders - either from Slayers:SYSTEM\All\c\, or AID:Files\Dash\ms-c.zip, or CASH:\StockFiles\c\. FTP them to your C partition, and your softmod should be complete.
Leenuks
Dash sounds all work. Its my music I downloaded from CD's that are now gone. Game saves are still there though =)

Anyway thanks for your help. Now to upgrade to a bigger drive.

G'day guys, just having some trouble with my xbox I resoftmodded yesterday, just some quick history I originally modded it around 4 years ago with the bert and ernie font pack the old fasioned way, this worked well but was buggy so at some stage I remodded it with ndure (unsure what version). Which subsequently stoped working, not sure why.

Needless to say my C partition is a mess, so I did the 3.1 install with option 2 (cleared out the hard drive). IT subsequently copied my mess of a C drive to shadow c, which was unwritable. I removed it and added a blank shaddow C and copied a fresh copy from slayers installer.

Now i have a ndure created C, and slayers un modded C in my shadow C both working fine and booting into unleash x, if I choose MS dashboard from the menu it boots up fine

My only problem is Im getting error 21 when I boot with the eject button (this used to work fine the first time I patched with ndure)

Any ideas?

Never mind, i didn't know you had to patch a complete C with ndure to use option 2, everything is working perfect now & my C/shadowc drives are nice and clean thanks for a great patcher biggrin.gif

Just want to say thanks to kingroach for the great painfree installer, dusted off an unmodded xbox 1.6b, followed this guide loosely, thanks to Textbook (which itself borrows heavily from kingroach's own instructions) and was running unleashx in less than an hour. cool.gif
CAUTION: The tutorial link above relates to ndure version 3.0, elements of the process have been simplified with latest ndure version 3.1.

Greetings! pardon my noobishness, and the fact this is an absolutely ancient thread and ancient tech, but i keep hitting walls.

STUPIDLY i formatted my xbox crystal hard drive while installing linux on a softmod, leaving me with a fountain of different errors varying from error 12, 13, 7, etc etc..

luckily i copied everything from the drives before doing so including eeprom.bin which is 256kb, I started off trying to hotswap and use xplorer360 to put the dash files back but it wont let me in, im using an IDE to USB cable because all i have is SATA interfaces, the device shows up in device manager, i cant initialize the disk because it says Device I/O error (i know the hard drive works because i can still boot into games and save game)

anyway. that failing brought me to Ndure 3.1.

I had tried xboxhdm version 1.9, managed to get to the point where it looked hopeful, then (because i had used it on a flash drive) i got the famous:

CODE
looking for cd-rom in dev/hda
no disk drive found of dev/hda
looking for cd-rom in dev/hdb
no disk drive found of dev/hdb
looking for cd-rom in dev/hdc
no disk drive found of dev/hdc
no disk drive found of dev/hda
please load linux cd and try again

which brought me to xboxhdm 2.2 and i couldnt get grub4dos to run the multiboot record, nor could the drive with said xboxhdm2.2 to even boot like the 1.9 counterpart.

now my final wall is trying ndure, but after nearly 24 hours of pulling my hair out i cant figure out what im supposed to do, ive googled it and this is the top post, others are vague and youtube videos dont seem to hit the same walls i am.

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! my old xbox was so fun :<
Pacer875
Edit: If theres a way of copying all my original files back that would be epic, as i said i have them all, but just cant get to FTP access or file access through hotswapping (atleast using explorer360)

Thanks in advance!
Heimdall
xboxhdm 1.9 doesn't run from a flash drive, as you have discovered.....

You need to use xboxhdm 2.2 if you want to run from a flash drive, or if you have a PC with only one IDE port.

If you have no IDE port then you are potentially in trouble, because not all USB-IDE chipsets support ATA security features, and you need to be able to unlock then lock the disk.

Instead of using xboxhdm you could try Autobuilder 5.1. You'll have to Google to find it, but it's an evolution of xboxhdm with some new bits added. I'm not sure, but it might work better with USB-IDE adapters.

Whichever method you use, unlock the disk with the eeprom first rather than hotswapping, then relock it once you've installed the softmod.
Pacer875
Thanks for the reply! I figured out what had to be done eventually, thought i'd post what I did here incase anyone else had any similar issues.

Knowing I had the eeprom.bin that I had backed up when i had FTP access (thank heavens I had the sense to do that!) and also knowing the 10gb HDD was becoming faulty and slow, I decided to try my luck formatting a 160gb IDE drive I had laying about.

I used SID5 Pimpedv7 CD Edition (UnleashX) and burned it to a DVD, Disconnected the hard drives from my server and made sure the DVD drive was NOT on the first SATA connector, knowing that the software would be looking for the hard drive on the primary (I guess this is why people have conflicts with SATA drives being active in their PC's while trying to load linux) I then made sure the BIOS was trying to boot hard drive (on USB) first... I dont know if this made a difference but it worked!

The rest was easy from there as its all pretty much on screen, I made sure that I installed, added the extra partitions, and locked the drive.

As I said before, the errors I received before doing this step were:

Error 13 with all drives connected.
Error 7 with no DVD connected (guessing this is why I couldnt hot swap)

The hard drive worked well formatting and copying files on USB but was a bit slow (I used the SATA+IDE -> USB cable from Maplin Electronics)

Today I installed LED's into the Xbox Crystal and it looks LEET, also installed a USB socket into a memory card case and can run a 32Gb Adata USB stick off it... which actually works to my surprise.

Sorry to kinda Hijack this post with instructions regarding another installer disk... but I thought I'd post my findings here, Ndure looks great but its not 100% straight forward to use for absolute noobs like myself, plus someone might be looking for this exact fix for their issues.

My next task will be to make a cluster of xboxs seeing as 2nd hand shops sell them at £10! <--Absolute steal
