Thompson sends own son on personal sting operation against Best Buy

From joystiq.com:
We have just received an email from Attorney Jack Thompson stating that his 15-year-old son purchased the Mature-rated game BioShock from a local Best Buy. Thompson informs us that BioShock is created by "the notorious Take-Two interactive," you may remember them from publishing such ultra-violent games as Grand Theft Auto. Thompson says that in using his son in a sting operation, he's proven "that Take-Two's upcoming releases of hyperviolent and sex-themed Manhunt 2 and Grand Theft Auto IV will be widely sold to kids of all ages, despite promises by Take-Two, the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), and major retailers." No word if Thompson will allow his son to play the copy of BioShock he purchased.
It isn't Take Two's fault that Best Buy sold a Mature game to a minor. As long as Take Two isn't selling to minors on their website, they are in the clear.
Also, speaking of Bioshock, reading that name reminds me I never bought the game yet, hehe.

He wouldn't be able to play it if you set the parental controls on your sons 360 Jacky boy.

I think the better question here is why is he sending his son to buy his games for him. We all know he is sitting naked in a bean bag chair playing away right now. He would like us to believe he was just trying to prove a point, but we all know the truth.

GTA IV should be good, but i too think manhunt 2 will just be mindless violence, thats the kinda game that needs an AO rating.

Its best buy's fault because their employees don't care because they arent making big bucks to care just like most stores, the employees just dont care unless they make commission(SP?)

This guy is a grade A tool.
His example proves nothing, if he wanted to prove something maybe doing it 100 different times at several stores would prove something but that shit is just retarded.

I know, I was stating the fact if they were, they would care more, because then they are forced on customer service.

When I was 15 my parents were worried about me getting beer and cigarettes, and if I couldnt buy them I knew someone who could. If only they had kept me away from video games I would have turned out OK.

A) It's no surprise.
Millions of copies of games are sold every year to underage kids. It's because the stores don't always check id, even if they say they always do.

It's not Take 2's fault.
All Take 2 is really responsible for (and not even 100% responsible for) is making sure the rating is on the packaging. Some of this is also MS's responsibility, though, as well.
C) Responsible parents take other measures.
As someone already pointed out, responsible parents will have already locked their child's console from playing games with a certain rating.
D) Get a life.
Need I say more? Nope...

Maybe he is trying to imply that since his son can purchase m-rated games easily from stores such as BestBuy, then perhaps the games shouldn't be allowed to be made or sold. But if that is in fact what he may be trying to imply, then if his son can purchase a copy of American-Pie or go see the movie Superbad, then what? What would make those alright Jacky? Why aren't you fighting that, and only targeting games?

This guy is such a tool. There are movies and things of that nature that are a lot more violent than video games (Saw anyone?) but he never mentions that. I think this jackoff is just looking for attention.
Oh! Oh! Look at me!!! My kid bought a M rated game and he's only 15!!! Now lets shut down the entire gaming industry because a Best Buy employee that probably doesn't know what a video game is just sold one to an underage kid!!!111!11!omgwtfbbq!!11!11

what if his son wouldve went in and bought Scarface or the Godfather?
Should these movies never have been made?
millions of fans of both movies would likely disagree.
both of these movies recieved dozens of awards!
and isnt that what GTA3 was...scarface and the godfather all rolled into the 80's. lol
A game that many of these assholes said shouldve never been made.
I guess the Mona Lisa never shouldve been painted either... cause she has a sexually explicit look in her eye.

lol. that employee could be fired. On the register when you buy any M rated game or cd or whatever, it pops up for the employee to check if the child is over the age. Funny stuff.
On the topic of commission. Someone said that if the employees were on commission they would be forced onto customer service. I completly disagree. A great example if you have a local fry's store around. Compare the customer service from a Fry's store compare to a Best Buy/Circuit City store and its completely different.

Jack Thompson is a disgrace to the legal world.
The ESRB is a seperate organisation that rates games accordingly to guide PARENTS on their purchases. Games retailers have taken this rating system as a guide also and have taken policies to prevent the sale to under-age people. It is in NO WAY the fault of the game developers, the publishers or the gamer themselves that Best Buy or any other retailer for that matter sold the game to a minor.
Jack Thompson believes that no-one has their own mind. No-one is capable of determining the difference between right and wrong. When mentally disturbed people who carry out real world violent acts play games with violent acts, you cannot say that the game drove them to do it, or even more moronically, the game 'TRAINED' them to do it. You need to have some serious physcological problems to carry out physical attacks on another human being without restraint. Thats something a video game cannot do to you.
Jack Thompson is wasting peoples time and money with this endless persuit of Take 2 and Rockstar alike, I wish Take 2 would just sue the fuck out of him and make him bankrupt. The man is a loser, he is in a position to help people, people with real needs, but instead he's going after things that just don't matter at the end of the day. Take 2 if you're reading sue him to hell on the grounds of his tirade against you being personal and not at all justified professionally.

jack is spreding more useless fud. whats new. and it had to be best buy sence everyone knoes that store has the worst employees poilcys and pay. i bet he hit other places first and they did card the kid but saying that wouldent help his fud spreding would it.
and i mean that abought best buy. they pound it in the heads of all there employees to sell anything to anyone even if its useless and unnedded. they dont do it there fired. so you think selling a game to a kid is any diffrent for bestbuy its all $$$ in the end.
long befor jack and all this bs abought game ratings the funcoland at the time now gamestop would card me for m rated games like the orignal gta serise. shops have been carding sence that time. but your still gona get the employee who doesent care hell you get it with cigrett and beer sales all the time but i dont see that in the news everytime a shop forgets to card lol.

Well any publicity is good publicity, so what do I care. Thompson has suceeded in nothing in all of these years of campaigning.
Anyway, at least his kid will get to play the Game of The Year (so far), Bioshock. Everyone should get to play that game, mature or no.

Firing that girl is too much. Suspend her for a week and make an example of her. Firing the general manager is stupid since he didn't have anything to do with the sale. Take-Two can't follow each game down the line to each customer to make sure kids can't buy it. They submitted it to the ESRB and put the label on the game. That's where their end of the responsibility stops.
I wonder how the kids at school treat his son.

this guy needs to get a life... i actually can't believe he has a son
that kid will be so f'ed up when he grows up
other than all kinds of parental settings on the 360, its not like take-two representative is standing behind the counter at bestbuy saying 'yah, sell it to him'
although it is the responsibility of retail chains to abide to the rating systems, one cannot trust them as they will just sell it anyway... its the parents who have to know what they kids are playing and they need to educate themselves on the system their kids have and tools at their disposal to keep a watchfull eye
on a side note - when i got gears of war i got IDed at futureshop before i could buy it (and i be 21)

kids at school if the kids smart he doesent tell anyone jackass is his dad. if he did all the kids probly would beat him up daly. then jack would blame videogames.
but its just not him its big meda companys airing these wast of time reports of him ranting every few days. if all the companys just simply told him we dont care go away he would only just be yet another ranting crazy on the side of the road and none would care.
and his rants do get somewhere sometimes. he was the jackass that got manhunt 2 a ao rating witch if it was a japan game would mean knothing but hear in the us retilers are pussys and whont stock a ao game even if it is only extreame voilence.
so in the end you pretty mutch have those 3 factors you need to slap around.
if anything i see a busness plane there. open game store that compeats with gamestop but have balls. jacky slaps another ao game everyone runs like cowerds i step up and say ill carry it wala i just got a game exclusiv to my chain of stores nationwide that = a huge of influx of new custmers and that = cash.

ugh, this pisses my off. my mom actually RAISED my brother and i to know the difference between real life and video games. heck, she doesn't mind buying us M-Rated games. i can even ask her to go in with me so i am able to buy them and she doesn't mind. she knows she RAISED us to know the difference.
parents need to learn to raise their kids. many issues can be resolved if that happened. sadly, it likely won't and we'll live in a world where video games are banned because of lazy parents and prick like Jack Thompson. i honestly wish he would just kill over....

That debate was interesting. I like what the guy in the middle had to say. It all boils down to how the children are raised. My little brother has been playing GTA, Halo, GeOW, and many other violent games since he was 7-8, but if you met him, he would seem like a regular human being.

My thoughts exactly. Looks to me like today's parents are always looking for "someone else" to blame for their lack on interest in their own children's education.
And Thompson is a prime example. Just because he dislikes something, everybody has to dislike it. You know what Thompson? If you don't like something, look the other way. And please return the copy of Bioshock before you ruin your son's life and make a violent criminal of him.

It is an excuse for bad parenting. My parents buy me games that are 18+(europe m equivelant) and say they don't care because they know I know the difference and am not gonna go on random killing sprees. I think Jack Thompson is just someone that doesn't like videogames industries.
