MS Admits Halo 3 Scratched Disc Problem - Free Replacements

Microsoft has admitted there's a problem with Halo 3's Limited Edition packaging scratching game discs, and is now offering replacements via the Xbox website.

The problem is blamed on the plastic and foam nub in the LE tin designed to hold the discs; it turns out plenty of gamers - including CVG - are opening their copies of Halo to find the discs loose and scratched.

cost to fix replace a dvd...35 cents....

cost to replace a console....a helluva lot more...
quall
lol, people who bought the legendary copy at midnight will need to wait up to 2 weeks to get their copy back if they exchange.

Good lord, their normal price is $20 to exchange a scratched disc. We need consumer protection laws that would mandate they either remove the copy protection, or offer exchanges for all protected media at a rate of 50 cents, plus $1 packaging fee, plus current postal rates for 3oz package.

I kind of laughed yesterday when I saw this news, thinking "Wow, another sad panic story" but it was right. As soon as I opened my tin, the game disc fell out, with a thumb print-sized scratched area on the back...
ILLusions0fGrander
and to think how much people are paid to come up with the packaging for things like this.

Microsoft are certainly showing the world how quality control should NOT be done. Since the xbox 360 has been launched we have had the 3 red lights that microsoft have admitted is a design fault, The wireless headset not working with original wireless pads, the wireless steering wheel being recalled for a fix, dash updates temporarily disabling consoles that have not had previous updates, and now Microsofts console selling game (limited edition) comes in a case that can scratch the disc to bits!
Nice one Microsoft laugh.gif

Have they even stated if they're recalling the games in defective packaging? I doubt it, they'll leave them on sale most likely to keep the sales up until they get replacements issued to stores, then all the poor people who are oblivious to this will open the packaging to have their smiles turn to tears! So very sad Microsoft, get a grip, these things are supposed to be subjected to quality control, how difficult must it be to put blank discs into some of these packages then throw them around a bit to see if they do the job they're supposed to do?
sicknasty413
I got the Collector's Edition (and the Legendary, lol)

I will admit that both discs that come with the Collector's Edition were somewhat scratched up.

The game didn't skip or anything. But I only played campaign and a little matchmaking.

I was at a midnight release last night and was about to drive home when i decided to check the disc. I opened it and sure enough, the disc was scratched.
I took it back into the GameStop and they traded it out no questions for me (what they SHOULD have done).
So i'm just happy that i had the opportunity to swap mine out.

Look on the bright side. If the game comes pre-scratched there's no need to damage it by putting it in the your xbox 360.

haha you must have forgotten microsoft fixed the scratch disc thing, so they decided what the hell lets scratch a few million halo 3 copys maybe there stupid enough to just buy a new one instead of trading it in. hahah

this is actually a comon problem with tin sets of any kind. I had to go through 3 prey le sets to get one that wasnt scratched. all it needs is more secure packaging...

Got my disc at midnight. Opened it up in the car and the bonus disc was so scratched it was unplayable. grr.gif Game disc played but it was scratched almost as bad. Took it back to Gamestop this morning and the manger said he could hear the discs rattling around when he got his shipment in. Expects to see a lot of them coming back. So I decided to exchange it for legendary edition. The helmet is cool anyways.

Ugh, the first time I ever buy a LE and I get the scratches too. Its the most important game for the console. How do you botch the launch like that? Mine plays, but if it didn't I would have been so upset. Not sure if I will bother with the hassle of returning. grr.gif

Nope. I know someone who bought an Elite 4 days ago and he shipped it back to M$ YESTERDAY. His GOW disk looked BAD lol.

I think these guys could f*ck up a cup of coffee. smile.gif

grr.gif I pre-ordered from amazon so im sure it'll arrive with scratches.
think MS will take it back if I take a skip doctor to it first?
I'm not waiting 2 weeks to play a game that'll only take 10 hours to beat.
Heet
Rent it for now then. 6$, cant go wrong.

I haven't opened my copy yet, but stuff is rattling around inside, does this means chances are my disc is scratched or does it normally make noise?

There's the manual and hard book on character info. It could be that character book you here. Gamestop was cool and said I could bring mine back for an exchange if I wanted.

Don't most stores, at least in America, offer exchange for the same title...mainly for this particular problem? (For all discs/software.) Why send it in to M$ and have to wait 2 weeks, when you can just return it to the store for an exchange? I mean, I don't know what stock levels are like right now, but i'm sure the stores will probably get another shipment in sooner than what you would get it back from M$. Also, and here's a really important argument...wouldn't you like for the store you bought the copy from know that they resold a defective product? The discs that get sent back to M$, stat-wise will probably get swept under the rug, whereas if stores knew just how bad the problem could end up being, the more likely the general public is to know about this type of problem, and the LESS likely a giant corporation like M$ is to screw up...yet again.

P.S. How can you possibly mess up a storage container that has essentially been the same for over 20 years?! The jewel case/hub design is tried and true, and yet somehow...M$ blunders it.

glad i sat there flipping all the copies of LE upside down over and over until i found one where i didn't hear the cd sliding around happy.gif.

I wonder if they'll replace the case so it doesn't fall off, now i'll always worry about my disc when travelling.
DRM_360
Just got my LE my bonus disc was scratched up pretty good, but it played fine. Luckily my game disc was totally fine.
h4xx3d
I've exchanged my copy twice, both times I got a disc that was scratched to hell... This is bullshit, why can't M$ test any of the shit before they send it out to retailers. The halo 2 LE case was gorgeous and well constructed, this thing is just cheap. Do they enjoy wasting money? Consoles continuously get the RROD despite the fact that the community has come up with some pretty reliable fixes.. and now this.. Discs may not be expensive to replace, but when there's millions of them.. it gets pricey.
zikronix
went through three copies. at walmart at 8:00 am 3rd was still loose but not sctatched.
Killa420
I got mine from walmart this morning. Just the regular game in the green case. It was loose and has a little scratch but is playing fine so far. The green ring that holds the dvd was broke.
bucko
lol, so this is the limited version, as in you cant use it lol!!

I'm a Best Buy Canada Employee and when I went to my store yesterday morning to pick it up and I picked up a couple discs you could hear the disks rattling around. I picked one that didn't clunk around. My H3 LE disc has a little scratch on it but the bonus disc had a lot of scratches on it... gotta swap it out at BB.
Slag Bag
Got my pre-order in the mail from Best Buy today and the tin was dings and dented all over, once open both disc flew out and had black felt/rubber shavings all over the disc. Underneath all of that was the game disc that had very heavy scuffing on the inner 2" of the disc, the extra content disc had only 2 sections that had scuffs. Called the store and they told me they are getting tons of returns and have some available for exchange still and are expecting another shipment of the LE for this weekend.

Well I dont have a printer so what the fuck am i suppose to do???? usless microsoft peices of shit what do they plan to do about making it up too all off us who now have to wait 2 weeks to play the fucking game??? nothing thats what microsoft just lost my money i dont give a fuck if ps3 is shit at least it works. I bet im the only one though right? all the rest of you retards will just swallow it down cos you wanna play halo3 would you take a cock in your ass to play halo3 cos thats what your doing if you dont say anything to these people stop letting them away with treating us like tards get on the ms xbox mod forums and say something, we're sitting here with a fucked game disk and they still jump about saying "yeah look how much money we made we're great halo3 was a complete success!" fucking tards!

oh and im on my 4th halo3 disk all my other games work fine before some smart ass says its my console.
fierygt
^Liam...just keep on ranting here. I'm sure incoherently whining about the problem, and calling other people "retards" will magically fix your problems. Pretty much every store around me that carries software has an exchange policy specifically for this issue. You have to have your receipt, and the exchange is same title only, but that fits here. Where the hell are people buying software that doesn't allow for an exchange? For those who are able to exchange them...why are you waiting to leave the store to look at them? Just open it right there in front of the clerk and make sure it's ok...if not, exchange it till you get a good one and be happy.
