i have two hard drives in my 1.0 xbox, do i set them to both use cable select, or master?

Traditionally, you'd set one to master and one to slave. I'd say, try cable select on both drives, and if that doesn't work, go back to master/slave settings. The HDD replacing the DVD drive should be master in that case.
