Sony Electronics President Stan Glasgow says Blu-ray player prices will likely not fall under $399 this holiday season.

"(The player will be) in the $399 range...I don't expect it to go much lower than that," Glasgow said today, according to TWICE Magazine.

Glasgow made his comment today following an announcement from Wal-Mart that it will sell the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player for $98 as a special pre "Black Friday" sale starting tomorrow.

O well I have both players so I don't care too much who wins. Though I do prefer Blu-Ray over HDDVD but its all good.

Picked 2 up today from walmart. First one i went to was sold out by 8:00 AM so i went to my local second one which only had 5 left. i got 2 of them and they were sold out by the time i left. I have a feeling this is going to hurt BR allot and if they do it on black Friday with higher quantities (Walmarts around here only got 20 per store) look out...oh plus 5 free movies too you have to admit that you cant beat that deal no matter if you are a BR lover or not!

EDIT: There is a firmware update on Toshiba's site that makes mention of a firmware upgrade they also mention 1080p/24 as being in the update. Problem is the update is for multiple players so not sure if it will upgrade the A2 or not.

With HD-DVD under $100, it's not cheap enough.

It could very well be "That's all, folks" for blu-ray itself if they choose to stick with a price that is 4x that of their competitor's. This holiday season will be interesting.

Situation has changed.
The sub $100 HD-DVD is a sell off with no replacement at that price point. Once the stock is gone the replacement model is $298.
BR still needs to come down a bit.

The replacement model is the Toshiba A3, which is now $199 at Best Buy. You get 2 movies in the box (300 and Bourne Identity), 2 movies of your choice when you purchase any HD-DVD player at Best Buy, and 5 more by rebate. Grand total of 9 movies and an A3 for just under $200.

At that price point I would buy one and have both formats. Bloody UK still gets screwed though.
