Is it possible to swap these two hitachi drives? i have looked around and tried just plopping the 49dj in and it couldnt read any discs. The reason i want to swap is because you have to use that passkey chip to flash the 79, and i would rather not solder if i can help it.
any replies are appreciated

Sorry mate,ther's no other way than to solder the passkey to get the original key from the 78fl drive only then could you swap drive's,but it would be of no use as you would have already done all the hard work.
