Can't connect to live currently because of all the network probs. But I'd like to get divx working in the thing. Anyway to download this update and install from a DVD like the dashboard updates?
StrictPuppet
There is no way.

Pretty sure you're incorrect here StrictPuppet as if you follow the instructions from here, it will work. Did for me. My dash is now at 2.0.6683.0.

Did this OS update also install divx playback support, out of curiosity?

Haven't played around with it much yet but it does have all the signs of it. I'll give it some more attention this weekend and let you know.

That performs the dash update, which can be performed many different ways, but it does not give you divx playback, which is what the original question was. The only way to obtain the optional media support codec is directly downloading onto your box from the xbox live servers. It will never be available offline, nor is it possible to transfer it from another box, as it is both profile and console "keyed".

I will quote myself from an earlier thread:

The DivX codec is not free for commercial use, therefore microsoft has to pay a licensing fee for each unique device that uses it. The only way to keep track of how many consoles require this codec is to tie it to the individual machine. It make sense from a business standpoint to not embed the codec in the dash update, which is why it prompts you to download the first time you you play a Divx file. If only 40% of consoles use this feature, why would MS want to pay the royalty for every machine out there.
If your console was banned from LIVE you have forfeited the right to obtain services from MS, free to end user codecs included. A pain in the ass, maybe, a logical business move by MS, definitely. This will never be downloadable from xbox.com, in the same way that the ipod support (also licensed by MS for a fee per console) is not available for off console downloads.

Here is a quote from MS regarding the Ipod AAC codec.
QUOTE

The codec you download will be unique to your console, it will not accompany you, for instance, if you move your gamer profile to an Xbox 360 Memory Unit to play at a friend's house.

If you're using a friend's Xbox 360 console, Xbox LIVE Marketplace will allow you to download the AAC codec again. But if you've already downloaded it to your own console, the codec will not work on your friend's, as the codec is only valid the first time it's downloaded by a specific gamer profile.

Expect to see a similar FAQ about DivX as they update their site to reflect the new dash update.

I stand corrected. Thanks for the clarification, albeit disappointing.

Basically when you want to watch Divx/Xvid you need to be connected to Xbox Live. Basically it performs a sort of on the fly update

Well basically that color is WOW HARD TO READ!!
But yes that is the way it seams to be.
I wonder how they will get around the issue of the codec being locked per console and not gamertag when MS sends you a refurb console. You will have already had your ONE download of the codec and that will make it not work on the second console.

No, this isn't the case at all - however it may seem that way.

The latest divx codec is downloaded under the same title as other media codecs i.e media update. You'll probably find that it states "download again" instead of just "download" on the first time that you get it. This is purely down to the name being the same but a difference in the package (nice version control MS!!).

All you need to do is create a Silver Account as already stated and download the codec with this. Microsoft's DLC rules state this new content will now be available for all users of this console, whether they're signed in or not. You can delete this account afterwards if you want. Note: this works with ANY DLC, but is obviously most effective with free stuff!

Does that mean i can take my harddrive with my gamertag on it and connect it to an xbox that still has xbox live, get the codec and put the harddrive back in my console and it will update the codec over to the console? And my friend will still be able to use the same codec on his console?

No, if your 360 is banned from Xbox Live.

1. The first console you download any DLC to is accessible by ALL users of that console.

2. If you then want to use that content on another 360, you have to either sign into Live with the same account which downloaded/purchased it, or download/purchase it again via another account on that console (which is effectively #1 again).

In your example, your friend will have the full codec for all users of his console, but you won't be able to unless you can connect to Xbox Live.

Run your movie through GSPOT codec tool and find out which codec was used. If needed, just re-encode using something like VirtualDub.
