How abut putting a switch like this....

note that I have used my xenon(broken) mobo cauz my zephyr is locked up. So lets assume tht as d3A1

IPB Image

So when the switch is off it runs in the normal mode(automatically switches)
and when it is on it will run at 12v

I am a noob but will this work

fredrow
I hope this thread is not dead yet..........

I have a Xenon motherboard, not sure what version.

I have the whissperMax fan that I want to install, and have them hooked up to a 5K pot like I read in this thread. So I plan on using the transistor on top of the board. From what I have read is this right......

RIGHT pin of TRANS to LEFT pin of POT.

MIDDLE pin of TRANS to WIPER(middle) pin of pot.

So here is where I am stuck, do I run the RIGHT pin of pot to ____________?????
(Is it the ground of the fan's?????)

Thank you in advance............

i blew out my transistor. i tried removing it but that turned out to be a silly idea. i couldn't take it off. didnt know how. i have one of the newer systems could i simply wire the fan to a 12v spot? or what would you recomend?
lenselijertje
the 5v point doesnt work on jasper motherboards, it already gives 5volt in standby mode, so the fans are always on, even when i dont poweron my 360.

is there another 5volt point on top i can solder to so i can run my delta fans always at 5volt?
TK-101
Just done the CPU fan for now.
I need to buy a smaller soldering to do the GPU.
TK-101
You can. I have done my CPU fan and i just recieved my small soldering iron to do the GPU fans?

Hi!

Did the fan mod tonight, i can already tell one or both fans are using 12v.
I bridged it exactly like this:
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/Grim187/12vbottom.jpg

Does this mean that both fans run at 12v or just the GPU?

Thanks for the tutorial and help!

Looks like both fans should be running at 12v.

I just did mine, it runs really cool, but it is loud!

Does anyone know if this will work? Seems like a quick and easy way to get 9v if 12v seems too loud.

Would this setup work for a 2-prong toggle switch to turn the 12v on/off? (Top of Xenon)

Someone asked a question one page earlier, but didn't get the answer.
I've got the same:

Do I need to bridge both, one on the top, and one on the back of the mainboard or just the top one?

My xbox overheats and gets 2 lights after some time, so I'll have to cool it down a little.
I think my only option is to make it run on 9V.

12v to 9v

Or:

Buy a 7809 regulator (get the TO-220 type) and some heatshrink tubing and wire. Solder a couple of wires onto the 12v and 0v (GND) point right under the mobo power connector. Take 12v and 0v wires to the input and GND pins of the 7809. Take wires from output pin and GND pin of 7809 directly to fans (don't have the fans connected to anything else but the 7809!). Use the heatshrink tubing to cover your connections. with soldering directly to the 7809 pins be sure to use heatshrink to insulate the pins/connection. Even better build it up on a little bit of stripboard.

which one of the connectors on the top side of the xenon board is + and which -?

IPB Image

because i want to connect those and with an switch i'll be able to turn the 12v off/on for both fans...

I have done the 9 volt fan mod twice now. Both times it was to a Falcon Motherboard.
First time it worked mint. Even sent grim a thank you message. Second time I thought I found a even simpler way to do it and it failed.

Here is a picture of what I did.

IPB Image

So first time I connected a wire from point A to B. I used a Lenline fiberglass brush to remove the laminate from where I soldered and it worked mint. My fans ran at about 8volts and that was perfect.

Second time I took a look and noticed the same thing could be done by just joining point C and D together with a drop of solder. They connect to the exact same circuit. Only thing was this time the fan speed did not change. It was at about 5.6v and U1F2 got really hot. (thankfully I noticed and powered it off before something bad happened)

Also the first one I did had a Delta fan and the second one had Nidec.

So am I correct joining point A & B is the same as joining C & D ?

C & D was simpler cause i could just drop a solder blob there.

Is there some boards this doesn't work correctly with? Like I said they were both Falcon (HDMI with 175w)

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Grim187
@syntaxerror329 i will take a look in to that when i get some free time, i havent traced the lines of the fans that far and dident even know they where up there.

if you want to do a switch use the bottom side of the board, i cant remember which ones are 12V and which ones are to fan on top.

if your getting 2 red lights your heatsink(s) probably isent on right, check those then either do the top or the bottom image (i think the bottom is best).

you should be running that +5 back thru the ground of the fans so they shouldent be on when the console is off (because there polarized), i will post a better point (altho farther away) for +5 that is switched when i get some time.

just want to shout out and say thanks, applied this to the two points on top of the Xenon, and now shes running a treat, 2hs into a movie and still hasnt overheated, much better than 5min after boot. Thanks Grim187.

I am supposto connect a wire from point A to the ground for the fan or i am supposto connect point A to any ground point like point D.

From Post # 1 "for 9v ground to this point" I think you mean "for 9v ground FAN to this point" ?

Hey guys, got a question.

My 360 is watercooled, all the watercooling stuff is powered via a 12v source on the 360, nothing's connected to the fan plug. It seems Microsoft have been going crazy with banning people etc. Are they banning people that voltmod their fans as well? I have a Jasper, I was thinking i'd just hook up one tiny 60mm fan to the fan plug so the 360 would think the stock fans are connected. I'm just not sure if it's worth all the trouble.

Oh yeah, I don't have modified firmware or stuff like that, I prefer to buy my games...

Sorry to rehash an old thread! I've just had a Falcon V3 come in and the customers complaining its too loud! Opened her up and found the D3A1 mod had been done but not the Q3M1. I cut the D3a1 Jump and its still running at full 12v. Blown Transistor?

Suggestions?

Thanks,
PRiME2008
Just a quick question,. I was recommended by a pro to do a 9v fan mod (because 12v is too loud) using couple 15k resistors or something on the fans and was wondering if this prevents the xbox from throttling the fans high from 9v, because I would still like them to go full blast when needed but have a minimal voltage of 9v compared to 5v. In other words I don't wanna bypass the auto-throttling controls of the mainboard but have the fans not drop below 9v to start with,.
griff_m4a1
Guys, I'm understand that this is noob suggestion, but you can just cut the cable of fans and connect them to dvd power cable of XBOX 360 (The pinout of dvd power cable can be found on google). I hope this helps. Take kare... biggrin.gif

That should not be done. You do not want to
suck juice out of the power going to your dvd
drive as this could cause rear errors or worse.
A noob suggestion would be an understatement.
This is a rediclous method and in my opinion
Should not be done since there are many other
points to obtain power from.

I can confirm that this works on the top of the Xenon board! biggrin.gif

Please help me! My jasper is dead!

Whenever I turn gives 3 red lights, error 0022

It was something on the board, because was working, I put the coolers on 12v...
When looking for a point with 3.3v with a multimeter, it gave the error and died

After generated the error never returned, even flash the nand again with xell or xbr, no sucess

What may be the problem? thanks!

Hi! I have a Xenon with original delta fans and would like to place an additional fan on the GPU (DVD has been taken out-> no longer needed).

Can I connect this fan to the original fan wires? How would I connect a PC fan (2 cables: + and -) to the original 4 wires (blue, black, brown, red)??

It would be perfect if the new fan on the GPU would be controlled as the original fans, but 5V would also be sufficient.

QUOTE(Neomop @ Feb 14 2009, 07:28 PM) *

I have a whisper max fan, and the 5v 3pin connector that powers the fans on my xbox seems to have shorted (wont work with any device anymore) so i'm using the SATA cable to run power to the whisper fans, but they're stuck in 12v.

I was running some experiments with your 12v mod and here's what I did

I ran the red/brown on a stock delta fan to a 12v source
blue/black to a 5v source. this messed up the power brick (caused a spark) and put the LED on it into red, and 3RLoD my xbox. i just unsoldered everything, unplugged the brick, then replugged everything back in and it works again.

What i'm trying to do now is figure out how to get that 7V source (falcon board) I dont want to screw anything up again. Also i want to be able to route it so i can switch between 7v and 12v with the nitro switch that came with the whisper max, but im not exactly sure what wires to cut up. i heard that running power from the dvd drive will blow that circuit up so I want to reroute that power to another source.

Basically what i need is "how do i properly wire up fans for 7v" (how many wires do i need to run and from where?) and how do i wire it so i can control between 7v and 12v

thanks

I am in the same situation as Neomop.. I would really like to make my whispermax quiet again... I don`t know where to solder to get 7V or just make the fans run ar 12V... Help with be apreciated... Also pictures and the kind of explaining you would use for an idiot because my knowledge regarding these things is limited...

positive of the fan goes to 12v, the other color, ground, goes to 5v, or 3.3v for near 9v fans, search for power sources.

Hey guys. Great tut btw! smile.gif I'm planning on doing this to get the 9v mod results but i just want to clarify how. As i understand i would have to do the 12v mod first by bridging the points on the transistor. Then connect the ground wires to the alternative power source point. Is this correct?

Thanks.
xenosaga22

;p while fidling with the fan wires on a messed up xbox 360 (junk i found) I accidentally let the +12v line going to the fans hit the casing for the AV connections after a nice spark and short out the xbox RROD, the psu needed a reboot, but low and behold after pluging in and unplugging the xbox... the fan is stuck on 12v and the xbox is working fine ;X maybe new simplest 12v mod? short out mod lol.... just something funny that happened a while back that i felt was worth mentioning.

I didn't care for this system since its kinda like the experimental frankenstein system i have and I had some wires stripped for testing stuff.... it just happened and I thought I would share this funny experience... anyhow... the xbox works fine for the most part and the fan stays 12v without any mods lol.... too bad this frankenstein xbox i have doesn't have matching dvd keys... (drive is not original) I would like to see how it plays games....

I also got rrod code 0022 but it was after I did the 7v mod. I don't see anything shorted out I even cut the 7v wire and it's still there any ideas?

0022 is cpu, it has nothing to do with the fan mod.

I want to lower the 7V voltage of my fan mod on my xenon (even at 7V the whisper max are louds).

Can i wire a resistor to reduce the 12 V source ? (which resistor value ?)
The ground is wired to a 5V spot.

thank you

i know this is a noob question but i just want to verify before i mess something up. You are just bridging these 3 points with 1 wire correct?

From first post: "Note: Sunon and Nidec Fans have Reversed Power Wires."
What exactly does that mean?
Will it effect me/mobo in anyway?
If so what should i do?

The reversed power wires thing means that the CPU fan is wired to the points of the GPU and vice versa.
In this case, if you want the GPU to run faster you need to mod the CPU points. The opposite goes for the CPU (need to mod the GPU points)

Ok so I have a Zephyr and I want to add another fan. it has two wires... and I know one is positive and one negative. How do i connect it. Should i buy a voltage meter? which one is positve the on on the right?
drunken_marlboroman
Can anyone tell me what the voltage is on the left leg of the falcon/jasper fan transistor. I've wrecked the solder pad on that one and need to find somewhere else on the board to replace the transistor.. 12v is too loud for me
torque2
Ok.. I'm a bit confused. I have a Zephyr motherboard so for me to do the 12v fan mod (assuming I'm doing topside), all I would have to do is bridge a little wire at the D3A1 points? I don't need to cut/modify the original fan wires (the red/black/blue/brown) at all?

Also, if I wanted to do a 9v fan mod, instead of 12. I would bridge D3A1 AND cut the brown/blue wires from the fan plug, solder them together and then solder it to the U1F2 point?

Just clarifying before I do this.

This is a great tut!

I want to add an additional fan. Can I just use a fan cable splitter and hook it up to the system fan header, i.e. running all (3) fans from that one header? The new fan is about .1A on a Zephyr board and I will be using this 12v mod. TIA
dennisv9
great tutorial/find. just did the 12 volt mod on my xenon; added an additional fan header at the front (just near the rol board) and soldered in 2 * 12 volt molex plugs. there are so many 12 volt fans in right now that cooling isn't an issue any more on my old xenon jtag that failed a couple of times due to poor cooling biggrin.gif tongue.gif
