i have a directv hr20 dvr that was junked but the hard drive is good. it's a 320gig western digital wd3200js. as best as i can understand, the thing won't spin unless it's plugged into the receiver, thus waiting for some 'command' from the box.

just for laffs (and the blind hope it would actually work), i hot swapped it by powering up the receiver then when it was spinning hooked up sata connector to pc and then it was 'seen' and i even formatted the thing but no surprise, when i rebooted the pc with the sata hooked up it wouldn't spin. i've looked high and low and i'm guessing the hard drive needs to be flashed somehow. is there any way to do this or is this thing a brick?
