I hope I am posting in the right place as everyone seems very sensitive about that issue. Since I am a noob I figure this is the way to go.
I have the Hitachi V.47 360 drive and the VIA VT 6421L SATA PCI Card.
I installed the controller card without the RAID utility and got the hitachi drive into mode b using the slax cd and flashed the drive with C4EVA_XTRM-HITACHI_v2_4_Stealth. Everything seemed to work great.
Now the problem. When I boot my pc without the Hitachi drive attached, the controller card is fine. When I attach the Hitachi drive and get it into mode b by leaving the tray open and unplugging the cable and then start the pc, the SATA controller card shows the "this device cannot start error code 10" issue. Sometimes the pc won't boot at all. But when I unplug the hitachi drive the error code goes away.
The weird thing is when I attached the drive the very first time, windows recognized it fine. Now I am getting all these weird issues. Am I doing something wrong?

What are you trying to do? Upgrade your firmware?

No I've already flashed the firmware. I am just trying to get the drive recognized in windows so I can do some backups. I've done some reading about making sure the SATA is in ide mode and not RAID mode but there are no such options in device manager and all the tutorials say not to install the SATA utilitiy - only the drivers.

I don't seem to be having much luck with responses to my problem. Is it because know one has seen this problem before or is it because it's a stupid question that I should be able to figure out myself?
The xbox can still play original discs so there is nothing wrong with the drive. When I put the drive into mode b by opening the tray and then unplugging the system, I get a funny message on my TV after putting in an original disc in the box that says "to play this disc please insert it into an XBOX 360 console..." and it has a disc control menu on the bottom of the screen so I am assuming it really is in mode b. So I don't understand what the problem is when booting into windows.
Please help - this is bugging the hell out of me!

If you want to make backups you will need ether a Kreon flashed drive or a Samsung or BenQ flashed with 0800 firmware.
Your Hitachi wont work.

I don't understand - all the tutorials I've read (including the one from this site) say that you can perform backups with the hitachi v.47
Here is an excerpt from the most widely used tutorial.
Extract a Security Sector:
Once flashed with v2.1…
Connect the Hitachi to PC.
Ensure XBOX video cable is plugged into back of console.
Power on the Xbox 360 console.
Open the drive Tray, by pressing the EJECT button.
Pull the power connector out of the 360 (back of console).
This will force the console to leave the tray in the OPEN position.
Plug the power connector back into the Xbox 360.
Power on the 360 using the "power" button.
Drive is now in Mode B.
Turn on your PC and wait for Windows to boot.
Insert original game disk into Hitachi drive and wait for windows to detect disk change.
In the right folder run “getss.exe <Hitachi drive letter> ss.bin” from a dos prompt specifying drive letter:
E.g.
C:>getss.exe g ss.bin
Creating a game backup
Make the SS.BIN file first.
Extract the included "ISOBUILD.RAR" package.
Insert original game disk into Hitachi drive and wait for windows to detect disk change.
Run Isobuster
Right click on DVD and select Extract From-To
Click Length and enter number of LBAs as follows:
Xbox 1 Original Number of LBA to read 3431264 decimal
Xbox 360 Original Number of LBA to read 3567872 decimal
Select User Data (2048 bytes/block)
Click Start Extraction
Enter filename as game.iso and click Save
Upon read error dialogue box choose fill with blank zeros for sector and select use this selection for all errors
Copy game.iso and ss.bin to the relevent isobuilder directory
(Depending on Xbox 360 or Xbox 1 game)
* Run build360.bat (Xbox 360 game) or build.bat (xbox 1 game)
* Ensure your burner will set the booktype of DVD+R DL to DVDRom
* Burn with CloneCd and choose the image.dvd file

You can with a Hitachi but it was determined awhile ago that you do not get quality backups and using them will get you banned from live.
Since they are not fully stealth they may not run on iXtreme firmwares... I don't have a Hitachi so hopefully someone else can give a more detail response on what works.

I'm not too worried about using live with this system. I have an xbox elite for that. I just want to do some backups if its possible with this drive. If not, what would be the best solution? I've asked my suppliers about kreon drives and none have even heard of them much less know where to get them.
I would like to test the flashed drive to see if it will play backups but I have no way to get backups. Man this is frustrating.

A Kreon drive is just a PC drive with special flashed firmware.
Find a SH-D162C, SH-D163A or TS-H352C drive and you can turn it into a Kreon.
My other point was.. which firmware did you put on the drive? You may not be able to play Hitachi ripped games on the firmware you installed.

Sorry the way I worded my last post was incorrect. I know that a kreon drive is just a flashed drive from another manufacturer. Unfortunatley, none of my suppliers carry the few drives that can be flashed with kreon firmware. If I get one on ebay, I am so far in northern canada, it costs more for shipping than the actual drive - $60.00 or more.
The firmware I used to flash my hitachi drive is the xtreme hitachi 2.4 stealth.
If i use the hot swap method to do backups, can I use a dvd-rom drive to read the discs and then use another dvd burner to burn the image?
Right now I have a Toshiba SD-M1712 DVD-ROM and an LG HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H55L.
Could I use the toshiba for hot swapping and copying the image then use the LG for burning the image?

as you are not using ixtreme firmware then any backup that has at least the SS will work (i think)
windows may have problems seeing your drive because the VIA card you are using is RAID enabled (whether or not you have the RAID software installed, it doesnt matter). RAID was designed for HDD's, not ODD's so you will have problems

Yes, I know. This particular cards SATA prots are specifically designed for HDD. IT is just funny though that at one point, windows recongnized the hitachi drive. I guess the original hitachi firmware was more compatable with the sata controller than then updated firmware.
Too bad I don't have any SATA optical drives in stock to test if this card will work with any ODD's. There is an SH-D163B DVD-Drive SATA D162C D162D on ebay that looks promising but I can't be sure if this via card will see the drive.
Is it possible to do a hot swap with the aformentioned drives or am I better off spending a $100.00 or < for a new pre-flashed drive?
