Hi
I am thinking about buying a xbox 360 hd dvd player> Could someone please tell me if it is possible to play copied hd dvd movies which have been burned onto blank duel layer dvd+r disks on this drive? Or does it need to be modified in some way?

You are not going to be able to fit a ripped HD DVD on a dual layer disc. HD DVDs are 15GB-30GB in size.

the HD DVD drive can only play original HD DVD discs.
it is quite possible to fit a HD DVD on a standard DVD (minus the menus, and more than likely use 2 discs per movie)

Can it be modified to play copies/backups like the dvd rom drive?

there is currently no hacked firmware to allow it to do so and i dont think there ever will be.
the 360 has mediaflags embedded in every game, video, XBLA and whatever else, which tells the console what media the content can be played off. i beleive the media fflags are not simple definitions like DVD,HDD, or USB, but device locations like USB1, SATA0 and so on.
so games are set to only boot using the built in DVD drive connected to the DVD SATA port

Not sure you'd need any hacked firmware for it anyway.
When you rip the HD movie, the encrpytion should be gone too.
I know when I rip my HD DVDs to my HTPC I can play them from the Hard Drive because the encryption is gone from the disc.

encryption or not, they still will not load. the drive is a a HD-DVD drive only. they can be played on the interenal DVD drive or by an external. USB device only

If you dumped the rip on an HD DVD writable disc, I don't see why it wouldn't work if the encryption is stripped...

for the same reason an xbox 360 game wont work without its security sectors. the drive is reliying and looking for that encryption

It should work, at least the standalone players can play a HD movie burnt onto a dual layer disk, it even has a name and is part of the HDDVD spec. It was supposed to be a cheaper way for smaller studios to get a "HD" movie out.

But how do you know this? Have you tried it? The 360 may look for encrypted discs for games, but no one knows if it does the same for HD movies.
