I previously had an xbox with a Benq drive, and i flashed it with an invalid key, then junked it; my bad. I recently purchased a new one with the release of GTA, however it was used, once again I got the Benq. I am going to flash it soon, but i want to make sure all is well.

In my previous flash i had a problem having firmtool run in DOS. It would read the disc drive and then just sit there after Datasum. Firmtool would not automatically run, and i made the mistake of going straight to fben, yes i know i am a retard, it was my first time.
Any ideas on what was wrong and why my firmtool wouldnt automatically run?
My understanding is that after a read you should boot into windows, check the .bin in firmtool, make sure the key is correct and make a few backups. Is this correct?

Basically if my firmtool does not automatically run it is safe to do it manually in windows and still trust i wont write an invalid key to my drive? ill kill myself if i brick another drive...

I am running a VIA chipset, Benq drive, and Ms-Dos from a CDR.

When i go into iprep i choose to write 12x ixtreme to my partitioned segment of the hardrive, about 20mbs, and create the msdos boot. Should i check the MTKpatch?

Thats about it, anything i am doing wrong, or anything i can do better would be greats suggestions. I consider myself at a beginner level, yes?

Also i forgot to mention where would iprep store the copy of the firmware? Would it go the iprep/firware folder in my partition? Not positive on the file name...

Just tryin to be 100%

honestly, the first drive you had was not bricked. you could of simply flashed the original firmware back to the drive.

firmtool never runs for me (it does for some people), so i have to do it manually.

if you want to use firmtool so you dont have to boot into windows, just type this at the dos prompt (minus the $, that just indicates a new prompt):
$ cd tools
$ firmtool /backups/xxxxxxx/xxxxx/BenQ-OFW.bin /hacked/BenQ-CFW.bin
$ cp /hacked/BenQ-CFW.bin /backups/xxxxxxx/xxxxx/BenQ-CFW.bin

note: the BenQ-CFW.bin may not be located in hacked. i cant remember what folder it is in so you may have to look it up

or you can use 360fwtoolbox in windows to copy the key over. you then have to place the hacked firmware in the /backups/xxxxxxx/xxxxx/ folder on your bootable media
