Rumored Spring08 Update Touts 'Motion Sensor' Features, Game Installs and more...

From kotaku.com:
If Microsoft follows the same schedule it did last year, the Spring system update for the Xbox 360 should be right around the corner. Today, an alleged and wholly unconfirmed list of changes included in the "Q2 2008" update was sent to us, supposedly forwarded from an internal source. The full list features about 80 new feature additions, tweaks and changes but was purported to be incomplete and subject to change.
Some are simply interesting as curiosities, such as an option to purchase Xbox Live memberships for charities and the addition of a Media section for audio delivered through feeds, such as podcasts. Others sound more feature robust, such as Windows Live Mail integration and an expanded "Inside Xbox" with news, weather, entertainment, help and community features.
Perhaps the most interesting additions are "Calibration options for motion sensor devices" for the Dashboard and "Support for titles to store installation data on Storage Device for faster loading" for Games.
hmm, hard to tell if this is real or not. the feature to copy music/videos/pictures from a usb storage device or Pc kinda throws me off a bit. MS are big with there DRM, and it doesnt seem like a move they would take.
otherwise, this is a very impressive feature list, and i hope every last feature is true.

A very impressive list, here is hoping its true. Still a lack of clan features, but not really important. I will be so happy if they finally add freaking 4 player private chat, something that should have shipped at launch. Putting install data on the HDD, I thought some games like Oblivion already did that? Wonder if it will be retro compatible, in that older 360 games will work with it.

The xbox probably handles the game stuff, probably works the same as virtual memory, so our xbox\'s may now have, lets say..
1 gig of total ram, 512 physical, 512 virtual..
idk just throwing shit out there.

thats a pretty good list, but I REALLY wanted them to add these 2 features.
1. Divx/Xvid support (I hate transcoding).
2. Able to see the Theme BEFORE you buy it.

May 14 2008, 07:02 AM
xbox 360 already supports Divx/Xvid, altough its very restricted. also, there is a website where you can view gamerpics and themes available on xbox live, so you can view them before you pay. google it
installing on a HDD and caching on a HDD is quite different.

I just want less restrictive divx/xvid support with subtitles, and MKV x264 supporting DTS/DD ac3!

Theres some nice features on there, I really hope that list turns out to be geniune.
I was hoping for DivX support in media center extender, and more VGA resolutions... but hey, you can't have everything.

You only have 3 games
IF they all took 20 minutes, you have lost a whole 60 minutes of your life. Come on!!! Everyone trying to make this out to be a big problem is simply looking for something to moan at.
I have 19 games now and NONE of them took 20 minutes. If they had I wouldn't care.
I also wouldn't care about loading to my 360 drive. In fact I wish you could load whole games to the HDD but I suspect this list is nothing more than wish list by someone. HDD installs could not be added via a simple update, it would still require the facility adding to newer games.
Why is this the*alleged* spring Update list? Spring is already into summer. May be there will be no update. If there isn't, So What? the 360 already does plenty that I need. Sometimes adding stuff just for the sake of it is pointless. Definitely make Theme previews for all themes though.

if the install feature they're talking is just like the one on the PS3 it wont interest me
but, if it's gonna be a full install like with the original xbox (using DVD2XBOX) I'd like to see it, cause that 120gb HDD would make sense

stop this crap in this thread, its not the place for it. and your opinion is not everyone elses. i myself have bad pop ups using a backup copy in my benq on verbatim MIS media, while the original is fine. this problem is a Benq related incident, so dont go posting crap. leave it for the relevant threads

The only time i've noticed delayed textures being displayed is when I walk into the gun shop and they appear a few seconds later. Not a big deal! My Xbox isn't modded (it's not worth the risk due to RROD - might lose warranty). The installation support might well be to save our lasers or finally fix one of the biggest sources of noise - or maybe it's required for UT3?
MKV Support/Subtitles and DivX 3 support would be nice. But I am still very glad they added Xvid support in the first place along with AVI support

I would also like BBC iPlayer support

The motion controller would be good - but I think it's too late - but they have to do something about the Wii - everybody I know is getting one just "because" of the adverts and nothing else.

support for hd installes have been around sense the 360 launched its just never used due to the limited size of the hd. if you ever poped in ff11 in your 360 you need to instal it onto the harddrive and to remove it the same. this disk is both a installer launcher and uninstaller. so that kinda make this list look like a wishlist being someone didnt rember that little rarly used feature. oh and age of conan i beleve is a installer to. thers no real feature nedded being games themselfs can be wrote to do that unless there talking abought launching installed disk based games directly from the hd.
hd instales have been around sense ps2 days but the only games ever to use it where ff11 and ff10-2 10-2 was a optional installer to ruduce load times(what little they where anyways). oh and ps2 linux used it.

Of course this list isn't official or anything, but here's what I think.
I personally don't care for the "Install to HDD" feature. If anything it should be an "Advanced caching" option. Where the user doesn't have to go through an install process or any of that BS, it should be handled automatically by the OS, the OS would decide what gets loaded most and throw it on the HDD, much like virtual memory as one poster mentioned. The whole idea is that consoles are an easy way of playing games quickly. They are not computers.
I'd also like to see added codec and MKV support. You know, multiple video/audio/subtitle streams... Probably won't ever happen though.
It would also be very nice to have support for the iPhone/iPod Touch. This probably also won't happen because Steve and Bill are dicks to each other.

come on group chat, this the biggest no brainer update that dumb ms cant seem to ever implement. Theres been plenty of times ive been gaming a friend and had another friend playing a different game and we wanted to all chat about whatever but couldnt. I dont understand why there are like 5 or 6 private chat slots, does anyone really have that many chats going on at once?????? get real!

i would love the install feature, even if it was just for texture sets. or better caching. i DO NOT have a modded 360, and im using a bought version of gta 4 and i get pop out of no where. benches, tables, all kinds of stuff. certainly they wouldnt allow the whole disc to be installed for play with out disc... do some people really think they are that dumb?

Support for an external HD would be cool and even better if it was any external HD not just M$.
Game makers being able to include an install disk along with the play disk(similar to some PC games) to get around the DVD-9 size limitations.

Well if was anything like pc games it would install the whole game to the HDD and check if the original disk is present before loaading. Which would be pretty cool.

Honestly, I don't think this feature list is real. ESPECIALLY the hard-drive install feature.
It just seems like shooting yourself in the foot. Microsoft has repeatedly put out consoles with no hard-drive and they keep lowering the costs instead of adding hard-drives to the core/arcade versions.
Why would they suddenly implement this feature, pissing off everyone who bought a non-hd console? Just doesn't sound very microsoft-ey.

If it is real then the install feature most likely will be a reaction to please Rock*. During a recent interview it was stated for the next GTA that DVD9 would be an issue, if at all true then this is a reaction to them, yes M$ would have to grow some balls to say STFU to arcade owners, but that's life.
Looking at past events from companies across the world, there has always been issues were early/present adopters noses were put out of joint.
If this list is real then I will be handing out the >>>

i don't see where you guys are going with this. i mean, where does "hard drive install for faster loading times" say that people without harddrives will be screwed? this would be implemented as an optional feature for people with harddrives. games would support it, but not require it. no harddrive would simply mean longer loading times, just like how no harddrive means no backwards compatibility now.

Correct, I wasn't assuming it would be mandatory. I feel the some people just assume that means all hell will break loose allowing Arcade users to have a worse version and not get the same experience.

Amen brother, if i'm playing a game with 1 friend, and don't want listen to all the racist teenagers spouting curses at each other, me and my friend enter a private chat.... problem solved.
Now if I'm playing the game with 2 friends, the only solution is to mute every other player. Why the heck can't I have a private group chat?!
Perhaps, i'm playing a game with only friends. Say gears of war 4 player (2 vs 2). I want to chat with my teammates AND my opponents.. this is not possible without some sort of private group chat!
Seems like a no-brainer to add support for this.
