Well, I personally use DVD+R and they work great. Depending on how big the AVI is you may also want to add a few dummy files to the disc, Usually a disc 100+mb works the best. As for burning the disc, first make the file(s) into an ISO using Quix or a similar program. Then burn this ISO to a disc using Power2Go, Nero, etc. at the lowest speed possible. As for CD-R's, it's possible to use them for movies, but (1) they don't hold much and (2) most drives wont read them.

Burn a 'Data' disc, not a ''Video' or 'DVD Movie' disk

OK, calm down mate. People will just ignore you if you keep bumping your thread and not waiting for a reply.
I don't know what version of Nero you're using, so I cant tell you exactly what to do it, but I doubt that theres too huge a difference. I use Nero 8 so these instructions may need a little modification.
I run Nero StartSmart, and choose Nero Burning Rom. Choose New and change media to DVD, create DVD-ROM (ISO), and set to No multisession. Then all you need to do is drag'n'drop the movies to the disc (you should be able to fit about 6 at 700-800 meg) and burn.
When burning set the write speed to as low as you can be bothered, and then let it go. I always use mines on 8x because I cant be bothered with any slower, but the lower speeds make it work better.
After you've burned them, you might be best to check that it works in your PC drive first, because if it works there and not in your xbox then it may be a drive issue rather than disc issue.
For a minor point, I know a lot of people who only use DVD-R because + doesnt work. Mikesshunk obviosuly has disagreed with this already, and I always used to use + with no problem, but just to let you know the suggestion is out there.

i've never had any trouble with the disks i burn, i just use nero express then click on data dvd, add the movies then burn. simple, no problems and i've never had to add a dummy file to it as i originaly was'nt burning them to be played on xbmc or the xbox at all untill lately and all the avi'd dvd's i've burned before i had xbmc work perfect and i just use ritek dvd's nothing fancy. i have an xbox v1.0 and v1.4 and they work fine on both, the tompson dvd drive in the v1.0 is noisy and annoying as hell but works fine.
