What is the status of the legality of modifying publicly/privately consoles in the USA? I can't seem to get a "for-sure" response. Thanks

I'm in the UK but some points to consider,
1. Don't do warranty fraud (e.g. mod your console send it in for repair)
2. Don't go online with your backups, only your originals (but even that isn't 100% safe from a ban on Live)
I think you have a DMCA law over there so you should read up on it.
