Gameboy Advance....
With pCe's recent adds from emumovies, we're looking at 125 more vides needed for the US/Europe roms (out of over 1,000!!!!).
Other than that, it looks like we need about 50 videos for Japan, hacks, and translations. Those numbers will probably get slightly larger though as I work through the GBA synopsis and figure out what we're missing.
We also need 9 more Gameboy videos, and 59 more Gameboy Color videos.
HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLP PLEASE!!!!!!
Thanks,

Some personal events have popped up in my life that are unavoidable and need tending to. There's been quite a few things that I've neglecting during this project, including my own health, that need to be higher on my list of priorities going forward.
I'm not one to go back on my words or just walk away from a project, so I do still plan on having the Xtras for the major systems done by the end of March, but I don't believe I can afford to spend enough time on them after that to make much more of a difference.
I urge people to step up and help us complete this before then. If there are missing videos for systems still at the end of March, they will have to be separate from the final packs that I upload here.
I plan on continuing to work hard with all of you for the next 4 months, but then I'm afraid that it will be time for me to move on.
Thanks for all of your past and continued efforts team.

Yeah.... It's not one or two things, but it seems like I'm getting hit with a barrage of crap from everywhere now and I know a lot of it is my own fault. I've really just got to get this work finalized and put behind me because I'm in so deep now that I don't think I could sleep at night if I walked away with it unfinished. I can afford about another 1/3 of a year I think, but probably not much more than that, at least in this capacity.
Hey pCe.... Thanks
I know you've done a ton of videos yourself for the TG16/CD and just uploaded the 100+ GBA videos, but are you up for making some Gameboy/Gameboy Color ones? Once those and the GBA are done, there should only be small packs needed for some of the lesser known systems. I'd say the GBA too, but for now I'm not exactly sure of the status of others who've made videos, and Iwouldn't want you doing double work for stuff that people haven't reported back with yet. I know for a fact nobody is doing the Gameboy and Gameboy Color vids yet though. There are around 60 of them total.

damn my rX, i hope all is ok, but your health is the more important
What you have done is so huge, and all the Xtras are near complete for all the major systems,
so i think it will be time for us in some time to just sit down and play after all (for my part, all the dynamic skins are ready, i have completed a lot of synopsis, some generic carts and now i'm working on the rumbles; it's similar to me, with my wife and my work, it's hard to find some time to our belloved xbox one).one sure thing is i'll help the project as much as i can too

Nah... it's not a health issue that really hit me now. I got laid off. My health just hasn't been a priority of mine either, so I'm going to use this time to wrap things up here over the next few months and get my fat ass back into shape. I figure I got about 30 lbs to lose so I can fit into my dress clothes again.
Just that and some other personal issues I have to deal with, and now have more than enough time to do so while finishing this project.
Now's not quite the time to quit yet buddy. Still have about 10 or so skins we need from ya to finish the entire XPORT collection, and some generic boxarts to make. I'd like to get everything for all the consoles released in March sometime.
My biggest hurdle still is finally getting around to finishing the GBA synopsis. Just about 1,200 more games to add to it and we can finally say that a vast majority of all synopsis/artwork/videos is truly done.
C'MON PEOPLE!!!!! SHOW ME THE VIDEOS!!!!!!

Yeah I've been slowly working on giving the remaining emu's the "Madmab treatment" so we can hopefully have at least that end of it done. My recent project is/was ViceC64 since I received a request from Stupot1 I did not wanna keep him waiting too long. The hard part will be making sure the on screen keyboard works halfway decent and that I didn't break the gamebase screenshot viewing functionality.
As for the recent changes I've been hinting at. I have everything coded up, I just need to integrate them into the main code and do a bit of testing.
Probably woulda had 'em done over thanksgiving weekend, but all the overtime I worked kinda wore down my immune system and I got a nice little head cold to make things difficult. Kinda hard to look at a monitor with swollen watery eyes.

Seems to be my lot this year. BTW the issues I was having earlier turned out to be a Kidney stone!

I think it would be cool to release full versions of some of the systems like Atari 7800 and LYNX which are already 99% done with probably no more additions to be done now.
I might even put one or two out far before the intended March release date.

EDIT 3: Oh yeah.... the GBA synopsis is 1,522kb so far. Not bad considering I used short reviews from only Moby Games and GameFaqs for all the non-hacks,translations...
408 GBA synopsis' down, 496 to go....

I threw together a small list of homebrew I didn't see in your list. But to be honest homebrew and hacks are really hard to keep up with on the 2600. Makes keeping up with 7800 homebrew/hacks a piece of cake.

The main thing I noticed about the 2600 set you sent me is several games were replaced with their PAL counterpart which not only made alot of games use those ugly PAL colors but also changed the manufacturer to be incorrect. The two biggest victims were Activision and Atari games which were pirated big time by CCE. Most of the box and cart art were fine. Although that is a little subjective. But basically for Atari games the best thing to do is go with the box and picture art with graphics on them instead of text. Only exception that I would personally consider is maybe using the text cart/black boxes for the first batch of Atari games to reflect there significance, age.
I guess I should have sent you the corrected versions of the ROMS so that the videos would look ok. If you don't mind sending all the 2600 stuff (except the ROMS) you did my way I can go thru it. Although it might be a little while since I need to push thru those code changes I have piling up.

Dec 6 2009, 05:19 PM
Probably an easier way would be to just make a list of games I messed up if you know which ones by looking at them. Everything I sent you a short while ago (assuming that I did send you that stuff about a month ago) is up to date. The categories may be a bit different now, and I may have upgraded the boxart to better quality or fixed them by hand, but I didn't change any roms.
I really hope there are only a few though. I really went through that system with a fine tooth comb and it sucks to hear that you found any like that.
EDIT: Oh, BTW... I'm through the letter "L" for GBA. That's nearly half of the roms for that system total.
EDIT2: Done through "O". Only less than 400 left to go for US/EU GBA synopsis stuff.
EDIT3: Partway done with "S". Only about 250 more to go!

Well I kinda got tired of going thru them and simply replaced all the ROMS with my sets. So in my case the only thing off was the screenshot. I was just gonna ask you to send the box/cart arts and the manuals, and now movies, and just go thru them and redo any screenshots myself. I could redo any movies that need done as well. And then send them back to you along with the ROM set .dat (

).
On another note I've been having a discussion with cbagy in regards to the volume controls I've added into the emulators.. And I was thinking that maybe it would be a good idea to put them in a seperate pop-up window while the user is in the in-game screen. Right now it works like this.
Pressing up/down on the right analog stick changes the SFX volume.
Pressing up/down on the left analog stick changes the CD digital audio volume for Genesis CD games.
On emulators that support MP3 CDDA (Mednafen-PCE) pressing left/right on the
left analog stick changes the volume for MP3 CDDA. Only useful for TG16 CD rips that use MP3's.
I could change this so that if the user presses some other button that it brings up a menu for setting the audio options. X, Y, white, black, start and back are available. Although I may have to reserve "start" for a context sensitive "help" menu if I ever got around to that.

One other thing I was gonna do is in the "in game" options menu if the user presses the right analog stick button it would bring up the synopsis of the game they are currently playing.
So what do you all think?
Likklebaer
Dec 7 2009, 02:19 PM
I think the volume control on my TV works just fine. Those volume keys are the first things I unmap on every XPort emulator. Seriously I've never heard anyone complain that the SFX in a game are too much louder or quieter than the music.
ressurectionx
Dec 7 2009, 03:05 PM
That all sounds good to me madmab. I'll have to see it in action first though to see if I have any suggestions. I think the volume stuff is real important, at least on a first setup. When you've got so many variables between emulators with all the movies and the various mp3s, it would be nice to one day sit down when the Xtras are done and try to get everything as uniform as possible for volume. I've got too many things right now that you have to turn up to hear and other things you want to turn down real quick because they're too loud.
I figured I'd wait till all the Dynamic Skins were created by Gilles first before I messed with those settings.
I'll put something together for you for the 2600. I'd like to know about some examples of games that were incorrect in the mean time, if you don't mind.
Oh yeah.... GBA licensed US & EU synopsis complete!

Okay... all I have left to do now are the Pokemon hacks and about 10 translations and the GB/GBC/GBA synopsis is complete. It weighs in at around 2,025kb right now.
Before I release it, I have some stuff to verify with the 3 systems and to make sure I have everything. I still haven't added those fixed games for GBA yet.
Once I get that done, I'm going to start putting a section for the main thread together which lists what we still need. At this point, I really believe that there isn't all that much compared to where we started from, so maybe it will put it into perspective for everyone just where we're at now.

Dec 7 2009, 05:39 PM
If anyone takes the time to play thru pce TG16 CD games or Sega CD games you would see what I mean in regards to volume balance issues. But really I'm not asking whether anyone wants the feature or not. It's already in there and is gonna stay. Plus it serves as a nice visual reference in case someone "accidently" lowers the volume to 0.

What I am asking is if people feel it would be better served to have it as a pop-up menu instead of being controlled by the analog stick while in the "in-game" optins menu.
One other thing I had considered was to have the top line, "title line", or whatever you want to call it alternate between the normal "in game" menu text and the audio settings. Every x amount of seconds. But if I did do that it may be a while before I get around to it.
Sorry RessX... I was keeping a list of games that were the incorrect version but it got to the point where it was just easier for me to copy my ROMS over top of yours. The biggest give away was either Atari or Activision games having there logo replaced with CCE who was pretty much a PAL pirate cart maker. There were a few cases where the Activision logo was still present (keystone kapers) but had PAL colors.
Once I copied my ROMS over top of yours there was no reason for me to keep the list so I changed it list other issues since the PAL issues were no longer relevant in my mind. It would have been easier for me just to send my sets to you since the I kept the directory format and filenames the same as you had them. The only thing I have not done is redo the screenshots.
ressurectionx
Dec 7 2009, 05:53 PM
I actually think I asked for the pop-up menu back when we were first talking about this. Maybe I wasn't explaining it right or you weren't far enough along with anything to make any promises.
I'd love to see a pop-up menu for this in-game.
I'd also like to see one in the main settings as well. That way you could physically see where you were at on the "scale" for whichever volume. Even the people who disable these settings from their joysticks could still control the settings from the menu then.
I look forward to seeing this. I think it's a great idea all around.
Later,
~Rx
P.S..... I notice you said this:
"What I am asking is if people feel it would be better served to have it as a pop-up menu instead of being controlled by the analog stick while in the "in-game" optins menu."
I think it shouldn't be done as an either/or situation. We could still control it as usual with the joystick, but this way you could use the menu as well. If you disabled it from your joysticks, it wouldnt' work here, otherwise it would.
Oh,
As for the 2600 stuff, when you finish changing it just send it my way. I'll sort out what you changed with FolderMatch. Should be only a weekend project or something. Want to have this right, and the 2600 is one of the most confusing systems. I think I got the synopsis info right, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the roms were wrong like you said. The artwork should be a different story for the most part though. I believe I have the right boxart for 99% of the games, and may have even used the wrong one on purpose if I liked an alternate one better on rare occasion.
How did you think the boxart was?
And.... I think to be able to use the synopsis in the in-game menu using the standard R joystick click is a great idea.

Mabmadness is good man, I like that
I think he's a pretty healthy guy upstairs though that's learned to balance work and family and this project and probably many other things at the same time.
This ain't the first time I did something like this. When I get hooked on doing something it's do until it's over (or I quit). There isn't any in-between. It's like the last time I was laid off in 2001 and I put on 70lbs of muscle in 2 years bodybuilding. I was at the gym 40 hours a week like a full time job (which I hadn't looked for in that time and ended up spending all my savings staying afloat while I worked my full-time job that, like the Xtras, didn't pay me a dime).
It's almost a shame I'm so entrenched in this project at the moment. Now that I'm laid off I might be back in the gym if I wasn't doing this work like mad. It would be nice to at least go up the stairs without being winded

I'm already done with the 2600 videos
Over 200 of them done in less than a day. Like I said, they're not the best videos by any stretch, but they do fill in the gaps and once I had them on my Box I was a lot more impressed with them than looking at them on the computer. There's probably a better way to do it than using Camcastia screen recorder, but I'm not big on research and I was already using that program. I had finished the Neo Geo Pocket, Atari 7800, and Atari LYNX videos that way already. (Madmab already replaced all of my 7800 videos since then with much better versions).
I know you said you'd do it, but I really want to wash my hands of this come March, or maybe April at the latest. I have a lot of real world things I need to focus more on and I just don't think I can do it working on the Box at the same time.
Whenever you want, I will upgrade packs down the road if you remake the videos and stuff after I'm done. I just probably won't reply in 3 hours or less

90% of my artwork is now MegaDrive boxes and not Genesis where posssible.
I also have some title shots all sized and optimised for speed.
These will load into memory and only use half the resources of a standard shot
with no visual quality loss.
I will upload these for approval when im done too.
Still well done though.

Beautiful job man. I've been looking forward to these. I will get them integrated today sometime I'm sure.
I've been told by several people that we don't need them nearly as big as I've been making them, but I've been making them as large as we seem to be able to without effecting performance.
Funny though... I may have to downgrade the entire Gameboy set in size a bit. It wasn't until I upgraded all the GBA boxart that I noticed the problem on any emulator, but it now takes about 1 full second or more to pull up the synopsis, and scrolling through the games seems just a tad sluggish. This might be because there are 2500+ entries in it though and the GBA stuff is at the bottom???? I put the newest synopsis with all the GBA stuff on it over there at the same time as the boxart, so I'm not sure.
It's weird though....
1) The GBA boxart is generally smaller than most other sets because although some images max out at around 500x500 pixels, most of them are no larger than 400x400. Images on other systems, on the high end, usually max out at 675x????. There are a LOT of those that size on the other emus. This makes me believe that it's not the size of my images.
2) The GBA synopsis is only 2MB. I believe both the NES, Genesis and possibly the SNES are larger than that.... I also believe one of those is over 3MB. I really don't think it could be the size of the document because of this.
3) The GBA has over 2,500 entries, but I really haven't added any more than when we had just the headline info for games. This leads me to believe that it's not the amount of entries either.
4) The GBA entries are much smaller than the 3 systems mentioned above. This is why we have so many entries, yet it's just barely over 2MB. I only took data from MobyGames and GameFAQs for these handhelds because I'd be working on the synopsis for a year if I used other sources like Wikipedia and others that we were using for the big 3.
So..... not sure what seems to be happening here. Any one of those things alone I don't think would cause the problem based on how other emus behave. Maybe the combination of everything is slowing it down?

Like i said weeks ago, all you got were some samples i was working with.
Not end product of course.
Im glad someone was inspired to upgrade the quality which was needed.
It just took me to ruffle a few feathers here and there. In a few months the
quality across all these emulators will have been upgraded.
Heres one i made earlier for an unreleased title.
Im not going to bother with generic boxart, i will try to build my own.
Some roms just dont have decent artwork either so im going to build my own.
Im at an early stage with this self building boxart but im sure i will improve.

PS. They are the same aspect ratio just x2. A 52" SDTV has exactly the same ASPECT ratio as a 26" SDTV.
IE- both 640 X 480

You are welcome Rx,
I hope we can figure out the lag without having to do much to fix it.
Cbagy,
I wasn't really sure what you were going to do with your set and, to what caliber, I just was going off of the set you gave me that I thought might stay "private".
I wasn't going to make a completely new set... I just wanted to upgrade the Xtras set.
It will be good if you make a completely separate set cause, I know ours is focused on "Genesis" and yours is on "megadrive". That will be a great choice for everyone.
I wasn't boasting, more less, trying to justify why I put in the work.
I started it before I even new there was a hyperspin pack, or what your intentions were... If I did, I probably wouldn't of done it.
You clearly know about this stuff more than I do.
I am just trying to do my best and definitely don't want to anyone having to keep doing the same work over again. (double work)
I am sure your pack will be great...
Thanks Guys

lol. Im not upset MM. Not in the slightest.
The stuff is sent you was early stuff as an example of my findings
with whats available and what can be done with them.
I was hoping to give you a "heads up" as far as sizes an cropping was concerned.
As i had already put the hours of frustation in and come to a resonable soloution.
You have done an excellent job and this artwork will display, much, much better.
Although im only collecting the artwork for roms i wish to keep, i will give you chaps
the boxart to look through as an alternative "MegaDrive" pack for those who wish
to theme their emulator in a more European way.

I won't be doing too much work on European stuff, but I have added alternate synopsis entries for people who would like to play "Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles" if they do the leg work themselves. The NES is really the only emulator that benefits from this now, and Barbie_on_Weed did most of the work himself.
I'm more than happy to add alternate packs if people would like to put them together down the road....

The whole screenshot/box/cart art code is not exactly the most optimized. I did make a couple changes recently when I noticed the effect on movie playback that help a little. Hopefully when I get Vice64 where it can display the Gamebase screenshots properly I'll have a couple more "optimizations". I noticed that occasionally the screenshot code get's into some type of mini "loop/iteration" from time to time. So I'll probably trace thru it step by step and see if I can stop it.
The code is a bit on the sloppy side.
Anyways one thing that I can say is that loading large files for display can affect performance. Especially if you are scrolling from title to title. Best to turn off "display screenshots while scrolling".

@ MM. Are you aware of the thin (1 or 2 pixel) black line that runs the whole right hand side
from top to bottom on every one i checked so far. I stopped checking after a dozen or so.
I also notice you have saved them in jpg format. I save mine in png format as it can handle
resizing and optimising better in my opinion. Png seems to hold colour better too where as a jpg
would have to be colour saturated or contasted at very high levels which in turn looks just as bad as
washed out colour. Be carefull of your saturation values.
PS. Cutting and re-sizing now will make them incorrect. Albeit only by a few pixels.

I was aware of that...
It was the boarder that tcp.net had, and I didn't want to cut it any further on that side.
Thanks for the heads up, that is some good info to know.
Of course they will be "converted" to png, but i downloaded them as jpg, so I just left them as is.
I don't mess with saturation values too much, especially with the tcp.net ones.
pick it apart, man...
I probably wont be re-editing these. (unless their sizes turn out to be too big.)

Once you had your cut selected at the correct ratio, you should have check-boxed maintain aspect and crawled in those 2 pixels to remove the black bar.
It would have adjusted left, right, top and bottom correctly for you.
They came colour saturated like that !!! Oh dear.
I have found a few where i have had to reduce the contrast/saturation.
I think they have been re-edited before uploaded to that site.
It would seem that someone has fixed the art and left the settings, then corrected them all with the same settings.
However ive found them to be of varying quality so i reckon they all need dealing with individually.

Well crap...
that was beyond my momentary talent, I am afraid.
I did check-boxed "maintain aspect ratio"
The contrast/saturation, I left, as is from tcp.net.
wanna fix mine too cbagy...?
EDIT: I figured the contrast/saturation would have been optimum from tcp.net
