Rx,
For SNES Boxarts:
Just go back and download the "emu movies" ones and replace them with your "black bar" ones.
(They should be the same, minus the black bars)

If you do this, you should be golden. smile.gif
EDIT: Or, check out the hyperspin stuff, of course.
ressurectionx
Cool... I'll do that. (I didn't remember where I even got the boxart originally)

You don't know of any higher quality images, do you? Hyperspin?

If anybody could get me the hyperspin boxart for SNES I'd be mighty appreciative.
madmab
Well been a bit busy lately...

Added in the seperate Box/Cart art timer. Works like a charm.

Added a seperate "Volume Control Menu". It can be accessed by pressing "Y" in the "In Game Options" menu, or from the "Game Configuration" menu. It lets the user set the volume for in game sound, mp3_cdda, cdda, and mp3 music player from 0-100.

Autoconfiguration is now working. No more having to manually configure most games! Took a bit of tweaking around but it works now. Coming soon to most emu's near you!

Synopsis of a game can be viewed from the "In Game Options" screen.

Tightened up the Synopsis code. So what does this mean? More work for you RessX.. sad.gif Sorry.. But now it should be able to do a search on a partial filename for CD games, something I had to remove previously. So probably all the synopsis' are gonna have to be cleaned up. Here is a quick rundown of what is most likely gonna cause issues in a synopsis files.

The code expects three single *'s to identify the start of a game entry, the end of the headline, and the end of the description. So it pretty much relies on a "three count" to tell it where it is. The problem is caused by using astericks in other areas of the text. For example..

*
*****letter*****
*

is fine.. But if you have

*
*****letter*****
*
*****letter*****
*

It will get confused. This is easily fixed by removing the asterick inbetween.

*
*****letter*****
*****letter*****
*

Astericks on a line by themselves with a space ( "* ") will cause it to be confused as well. This is fixed easily with a search and replace.

When I did a run thru of the PCE synopsis, those seemed to be the only issue. There was another bug I fixed in regards to long lines with no spaces.

Hopefully these "tweaks" will not create any other unforseen issues. But I wanted to tighten up the code so when I do get around to using the Synopsis for game selection there will be less room for weird problems cropping up.

Just let me know which emu's you'd like a compile of the new code with. I was gonna try to send Mednafen_NES yesterday so we could see about doing a non-beta release, but kinda ran out of time.

Still have some other cleaning up I wanna do in regards to selecting specific file types (like skin configurations, etc). But for the most part everything appears to be good.

Oh happy days! biggrin.gif
Excellent madmab.

OK.. seriously.. wtf is going on with the upload sites...? is it just me...? unsure.gif
ressurectionx
Upload sites all suck right now. I think it's the man trying to make sure my Xtras don't get out cool.gif

I'd like to see the NES beta first madmab. Interested in seeing what changes you've made and how much more work this is going to create on my end for the synopsis stuff.

I'm trying to get somebody on the hyperspin boards to share the 600+ images they've cleaned up. I have already integrated an old pack of 200 he did a while back. I probably kept around 50% of his images. Hopefully he gets my PM and sends the rest my way and I'll get them all in there. After that I'll use the emumovies artwork to replace the ones I put bars on.

I'm trying to find whatever I can to keep me busy. I know I have plenty to do still, but it's mainly smaller things and tidying up that need to be done all over the place as opposed to a large task with direction like synopsis creation. So I'm kinda all over the place while I wait on Gameboy video creation, Generic Boxart creation, a few new emus and Dynamic skins and some other things I'm waiting on.

Later,

madmab
Sure no problem.. Mednafen_NES was gonna be the first one.

Forgot to mention I had to shrink the size of the NES manuals to be able to view them within the Media Browser. Not sure how much I shrinked them... 10-20%?? But it's real nice to be able to flip thru them with the white and black buttons, as well as it remembering where I was.

Just did a quick run through of the code to remove (hopefully) all instances where the game select directory would get reset (like when managing save states, etc).

No it isn't. It's been more than 24 hours I'm still trying to upload the last megabyte of a file. torch.gif
Rapidshare is OK, though.

I think that upload is broke man... hate to tell you. You may be better off doing it again.

I wish megaupload would fix whatever problem it's been having. It's by far my favorite filestoring service and I'd always recommend to everyone to use it until the last month or so. It's just funny that some of the other ones are having problems at the same time. I wonder if something is up?

There are a few new videos to make for Game Gear and NES at romhaking. Aeon Genesis and somebody else just released a translation for the "lost" Lunar game for the Game Gear. What a way to wrap up the new year. We got the only untranslated Lunar game and we got Brandish 2 for the SNES. cool.gif

I'm really kicking some ass here otherwise... Needed to take a step back and get things organized and stage for my next modes of attack. I just added 9 new games for the Atari 2600, including synopsis artwork and vids. 7 of them were homebrew that madmab let me know about and two of them are great little Montezuma hacks which turn your character into Lara Croft. There's the Classic Outfit hack in green, and the Modern Outfit with her newer brown outfit. That hack was created by our very own Excalibur and he also provided a great Boxart and Cart shot for it as well. Thanks Ex happy.gif

I've got about 12 SNES and NES games yet to add, and about 40 or so hacks for the Atari 2600 and 7800 to go through. I figure a lot of those hacks won't be worthwhile though and will get cut (I've got about 30 or more Pac-Man hacks to go through and only the Exceptional ones are going to make it).

Other than that, I'm just trying to knock down the smaller systems while I'm waiting on people to send their stuff my way.

Later,
~Rx

EDIT:

Here's the boxart for Ex's hack...

I think I know what the problem is: there are too many users using it! I have a premium account for a month and I should be getting good download speeds, but it is running at about half capacity at times. Therefore, the free users would get the short end of the stick because the priorities would be towards the premium users. Everyone must be utilizing all of the file sharing sites right before the holidays. laugh.gif

Forgot to mention that when I'm done this week the emulator is gonna look for "skin configurations" in the "configurations" directory of the skin itself.

ressurectionx
Nice.... I don't know if I ever asked for that since it seemed trivial and you had a billion other things on your plate already, but I know I've wanted it.
ressurectionx
Awesome happy.gif

I just spoke with a gentleman named dpar over at hyperspin and he hooked me up with the complete US SNES boxart set that he cleaned up himself. Much higher quality stuff in here than anything else I've seen for the system besides the stuff we already grabbed from thecoverproject.

This is going to look great.

Still waiting on dnyce to send me the NES boxart upgrades and still trying to find good gameboy (regular) images since all the ones I have are tiny and dirty compared to the other sets I've completed.

Later,
~Rx

We didn't have a boxart for this prototype and I felt that it deserved its own special box to make it stand out even more among all the other generally lame SNES prototypes out there....

IPB Image

Yeah... I know. My PC artwork skills are crap and so is the M$ Paint program I use, but I feel that it speaks well to the laughably rough and unfinished game itself. cool.gif
ressurectionx
Huh.... I must have delusions about my own comedic skills. That pic had me rolling when I made it... laugh.gif

Anyways... SNES boxart is completely updated. A majority of it is from thecoverproject and hyperspin now. There are some US/EU images which are still smaller quality, but that was usually because he had a very custom box or the colors were too washed out to use. I removed the black bars at the top and bottom of any boxes that didn't get replaced with better ones. All of gilles' generic boxarts are included too, so every game has great looking box representation.

Also, I revamped the "Current Progress" part of the thread to reflect my own personal "to do" list. I won't be including the numbers for videos for consoles until they're released since a lot of them are added to piecemeal. This should clear things up though and always let people know where we stand when it's updated.

Here's the new Current Progress for all systems...

Hey Madmab,

Awesome new beta for the NES all around... Got a few thoughts, ideas and suggestions for ya....

Part 1: Kudos

Wow! That fixed width text works great for the text file viewer. That is EXACTLY what was needed! Now if somebody took the time to make ASCII art on a Gamefaq to show a controller or anything else it shows up perfectly (as long as it's within the width parameters of your TV setup).

It also makes indentation and paragraphs and a whole mess of other things look very professional now.

Thanks for getting that in there madmab. I've been waiting for this feature since around the start of our work here and it's everything I thought it could be. Now that ninja is working on collecting and formatting over 900 or so gamefaqs for the NES, this is going to be an amazing feature I didn't think would have been possible to release even 3 weeks ago.

Also... the media browser concept is revolutionary. I definitely have some suggestions to tweak it now that it's finally in place. It's so good to finally see the corner stone for this feature added so we can build upon it.

Part 2: Bugs

When you use the synopsis in the in-game menu, the BGM music starts back up.

I'm not at all opposed to the BGM playing anytime *immediately* when you go to the in-game menu (I think it would be really cool actually!)

The problem here is, when you "Return to Game" the BGM keeps playing while the game plays.

Maybe we could have it so the BGM plays right after you press the right joystick in-game and shut off when you exit back to the game (either by pressing B or by selecting "Return to Game").

Part 3: Suggestions for the next public release

I went to browse screenshots in the Utilities menu and it started at the folder for the NES movies. This is because "F:\Media\NES\Movies was the last folder I had gone to earlier when I was "Browsing Manuals/Videos"

Here's my suggestions for the Utilities menu. Have (at least) 6 separate choices for Screenshots, Movies & Videos and other stuff (Possibly one each for Commercials and Reviews, like Angry Video Game Nerd too).

These would be the default directories (or the E: drive if you prefer)

Browse Screenshots: F:\Screenshots\NES
Browse Enhanced Artwork: F:\Media\NES\Enhanced Artwork
Browse GameFaqs: F:\Media\NES\Game Faqs
Browse Manuals: F:\Media\NES\Manuals
Browse Strategy Guides: F:\Media\Strategy Guides
Browse Intro Movies: F:\Media\NES\Movies

(You could also ask the user if these other "Media" directories are correct when you set the "Media" directory in the configuration menu and have the emulator automatically select these directories to make this MUCH easier on the end user)

Also.... The In-Game menu....

I think we should just have an option right on the front in-game screen (towards the top of the list) that says "Media Browser". When you select "Media Browser", you will get all the options I've mentioned above and you will immediately be taken to the directory for the type of media you selected.

BONUS!!!!!!..... If there is a Game Faq or Movie who's file name matches your currently playing rom exactly, it will automatically open up that file when you select the movie/Game Faq/Commercial/etc..... If there is no match, it just takes you to the beginning of the specified media folder.

What do you think?????

P.S....

Thanks Boomin Newman for the kind words. We can't wait to get this all out to the public. cool.gif

Oopsie.... I'll fix that. I tend to turn off music when testing because the sound buffer repeats when in debug mode and stepping thru code (aka VERY annoying).

We discussed this in the past and I thought it just made more sense to drop the user in the media directory. Really... adding all those options would just end up making it complicated again. But maybe we can assign a button to bring up the "media browser".... X maybe?

Well technically the xbox does not care. If you rename .jpg files to .png it will still show them properly. Having it check for both though, unfortunately, will just create performance issues. Checking for files now causes the game preview to hesitate for a split second. That reminds me, though. I need to try an alternative command and see if it works better.
ninjagaidenfreak
Just check out the Beta and damn the fixed width is sweet, What I was doing before is kinda a waste of time.

I'm going to go through and stick all the faqs I downloaded on my box and go through and see which ones work good unedited and which ones I need to edit a little.

from What I've seen it looks like most of the work is going to be file renaming and that's a good thing to me smile.gif

Going Through the NES games now and will gave a update once I get through them all.

I think you will have to resize them, then optimize the output file, try to output them to .png with 256 colours with only 1 % optimization. This will reduce them unbelievably and you will not be able to see the difference.
madmab
Glad to see things worked out for you ninjagaidenfreak. See, sometimes RessX does come up with a good idea. laugh.gif wink.gif tongue.gif
madmab
Well I'm starting to work on the "Auto configuration" database for Winuaex which will be based on the configs provided by waal. Anywho the concept is to compare the values configured with the default values and if there are any differences they are stored in the database. The parameters checked are mostly ones that affect compatibility (Kickstart, Vid Chipset, etc). With a few exceptions that affect playability (cpu speed, mouse speed), etc.

Port 1-2, and Mouse Control are more an extension of the "Preset Controller Settings" which has not been implemented just yet.

The only questionable options are the sound options. In my experience they generally don't need to be changed, but it does seem that occasionally a title comes along that sound better when these are modified.

Here are the settings I'm checking so far...

That was the case when we discussed it ages ago, because we really hadn't seen how it would work and I wasn't nearly as organized with all of the Xtras as I am now, but now that it's out I really think this wouldn't add anymore clutter and would work much nicer.

Here's what I was thinking....

UTILITIES MENU:

There would only be One option doing it this way in the Utilities Menu for "Media Browser" instead of the 2 options you have there now: "Browse Screenshots" & "Browse Videos/Manuals", so right off the bat Utilities looks even cleaner this way.

Once you open up the Media Browser option, then you can choose one of as many options as we'd like to add here down the road, depending on how many Xtras are in the final packs, and it would take you right to the directory with that media inside.

Here is the list of options in the Media Browser category on the left, with the (User Specified) directory on the right:

UTILITIES/MEDIA BROWSER:

Browse Screenshots: F:\Screenshots\NES
Browse Enhanced Artwork: F:\Media\NES\Enhanced Artwork
Browse GameFaqs: F:\Media\NES\Game Faqs
Browse Manuals: F:\Media\NES\Manuals
Browse Strategy Guides: F:\Media\Strategy Guides
Browse Intro Movies: F:\Media\NES\Movies

I'm thinking that the Xtras won't be viewed by most users very often from the Utilities menu, but the same concept can be used and expanded upon for the in-game menu.

IN-GAME:

We have an option called "Media Browser" when the in-game menu pops up. The menu for that option will be very similar.....

IN-GAME MENU/BROWSE MEDIA

Browse Screenshots: F:\Screenshots\NES
Browse Enhanced Artwork: F:\Media\NES\Enhanced Artwork
Browse GameFaqs: F:\Media\NES\Game Faqs
Browse Manuals: F:\Media\NES\Manuals
Browse Strategy Guides: F:\Media\Strategy Guides
Browse Intro Movies: F:\Media\NES\Movies

Splitting things up like this has its advantages and also opens up new possibilities. I was thinking it would be amazing here if we could automatically bring up the media associated with a game if the media's file name matched the rom file name. That way if you go to the Media Browser in-game and select "Strategy Guide" for Final Fantasy, instead of dropping you directly into the beginning of the Strategy Guide directory like the Media Browser would in the Utilities menu, it would pull up the correct Strategy Guide automatically. Same for Intro Movies, Commercials, Game Faqs or whatever else we add to the Xtras.

CONFIGURATION OF DIRECTORIES:

Of course, none of this works well at all if the files are not in the right place, or if the emulator is not pointing to the correct locations. It's also not going to mean much if it is a huge pain in the butt to configure either. I think that will be a snap though if you organize your media folders like I have. You already have the code doing part of the job right now.

Currently, when you select the "Media" folder for the emu, it asks "Do you want to make XXX\Media\Movies the default Movie directory?" or something along those lines. We could simply have it ask these questions as well:

Do you want to make XXX\Media\Game Faqs the default Game Faqs directory?
Do you want to make XXX\Media\Strategy Guides the default Strategy Guides directory?
Do you want to make XXX\Media\Manuals the default Game Manuals directory?

Sure... these may not be the exact directories that you guys have your stuff, but I urge you to put them together this way because it is extremely easy to work with and organized this way. This will be the way that the Xtras will be released when it's t00rent time.

I hope you reconsider this now. I think the way I suggested it will be the sleekest interface possible with this new capability.

I suppose I'll have to think about it a bit. At the very least I didn't wanna bog down the "official release" of MednafenX_NES since the "public beta" has been out some time now.

The movie/video viewing function of the media browser is really more intended for stuff like commercials and other crap like that rather than the intro movies directory.

Just seemed to me people got a bit confused when we switched to the new "media/artwork/" structure for box/cart art and screenshots. Having a bunch of more directories may even be more confusing. blink.gif

Just seems like an awful lot of "pop-up" windows in a row. laugh.gif I wonder if there is a simpler way...

Would probably be good to have them in the "configure directories" utility menu and change the menu option that displays the media path to "Configure Media directories" or something like that.

What is "enhanced artwork"? Is that what you name your directories now? Mine is named "artwork" ATM.

/me "smacks RessX in the head"...

Well I have to admit that I had a sneaky suspicion the directory structure thing would come back up once I got the Media Browser functioning the way I wanted it. laugh.gif So I guess I was kinda asking for it anyways.. But considering how well things are going with the FAQS for ninjagaidenfreak...

We will discuss it for a bit, but in the meantime I'm currently occupied with adding in a configuration database to Winuaex and a user definable controller configurations into Vice64 and Winuaex. I suppose now that I think about it Vice64 could probably use a configuration database as well... Hrrmmph..
ressurectionx
No need to bog down the official release, but it's definitely something that should be considered. cool.gif

I realize it's not for really watching intro movies, but might as well have the selection for it. It's not adding any clutter since it will just be another item in the "Media Browser". I think we should make the most of this feature now that it's finally here.

I'm sure people got confused since things changed up, but they'll adjust. We've got to get the standard set up now so the features work as designed with the Xtras.

Here's my directories (I will verify this when I'm back at my Box computer, but I think it's accurate):

F:\Screenshots\NES
F:\Media\NES\Enhanced Artwork
F:\Media\NES\Game Faqs
F:\Media\NES\Manuals
F:\Media\NES\Strategy Guides
F:\Media\NES\Movies

EDIT: The directories should be the same for every emulator.

I think I have a few more as well, but those are my directories for a majority of the NES Xtras.

"Enhanced Artwork" is what I've called the new artwork system where we separated Title/Action/Box/Cart into four folders with the game name as the file name.

P.S. Also... when you're fixing that music bug we mentioned earlier, any chance you could make it so the emu music plays the moment the in-game menu comes up and then stops again when you start the game back up?

I honestly cant see users re-arranging all their emulators and directories to suit what you consider to be ideal. This method works for you cause your still in the cataloguing phase. And its workable for you to work from one directory. This removes the flexibility thats supposed to be synonymous with these emulators. The first thing i would do was to start editing ini's immediately so each emulator had its own contents. Now if this is hardcoded then users will be rolling back to older builds. Standard HDD users are not going to be able to even partake of the extras with this method also as most would be running from DVD disc's. Just a thought !

Haven't we also been down this road with dat's ? Re-naming roms, video's and screenshot's to suit what you consider to be good. Only to be told that it's all going to be irrellivant with the new crc check system. So all in all a wasted exercise. Then we move into the future, its been suggested that these extras may be tranferable to PC emulators at some point in time. I dont see PC emu authors changing the long established naming convention to suit. Emulator authors wont change, rom sites wont change. This will leave a great collection of extras out in the cold because it tried to reinvent the wheel so to speak. Consider this at this phase and not later down the road. It cant be seen as a shambles.

Measure Twice, Cut Once.

I say ask around, see what the response is before any major decision is taken.
ressurectionx
You can change the directories on your own if you'd like. Nothing here is going to be hard-coded as far as they are concerned. You'll just be making a lot of work if you don't have them organized right.

Bottom line, you're not doing things right if you don't have all of the Xtras in a central "Media" folder for each system. Where the hell do you have all of your media? All over the Box in different spots?

Once my t0rrents (and even the Xtras released on this page) are out, the files will all match the rom name perfectly and they will be in the correct folders. This may not be the standard on a lot of boxes now, and it may not be what you personally consider ideal, but this is going to be the new standard for directories when the Xtras are finally released, so you may as well get used to it now.

BTW...

If the user has a stock 8GB hard drive, this will cause no issues anyhow (except the fact that they won't have room for many extras).

When the Media directory is selected, simply choose the following:

E:\Media\NES

When you've selected that, it will either ask you if you want to rename the other directories for the specific Xtras as well. If you have your crap all unorganized all over the place, you can just say no to that question and then you can manually point to the media directories.

E:\Screenshots\NES
E:\Media\NES\Enhanced Artwork
E:\Media\NES\Game Faqs
E:\Media\NES\Manuals
E:\Media\NES\Strategy Guides
E:\Media\NES\Movies

Sorry cbagy, but I'm running the Xtras show here, and this is the way the directories are going to be. You can choose to put them on the E or F or G drive, but this is the basic structure. Feel free to go to the trouble of renaming and moving things after you download them if you'd like, but it's going to be a much larger pain for you to configure the emulators if you do.

EDIT: Also, if you don't choose to keep all of the Xtras in the spots I've put them, you cannot help seed the t0rrents when they arrive. I'm making this organized like it is with two things in mind. Having a perfect mirror of all files on my XBox backed up twice on my own PC, and also allowing people to keep the files seeded since they will not need to rename or change a thing they downloaded before FTPing it onto the box.

EDIT 2: And as far as re-inventing the wheel is concerned. I have invented the first round wheel here with the Xtras. Any "wheel" I've come across in all of these years of doing this were squares and triangles. I wouldn't have put 4 years of hard work into this if anything out there was any good. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that other people got their projects as far as they did because it made my work here a lot easier, but for the most part the end result was garbage.

We'll just let the Xtras speak for themselves when they're finally out. cool.gif

I have my extras within each emulators own home media directory. So each emulator is independant of a central directory. I can copy and burn them to disc and not have to alter a bean. No editing ini's, no browsing to e:\saves\emu name to change ini's. Out of the box or off a disc doesn't matter. Flexibility without even making an effort. Of course your way works too ! As long as no-one suffers a dodgy partition, a damaged section of HDD, everything should be rosy. Time will tell as im sure other users will have an opinion too. Even though its quite apparent that that doesnt sit well with you.

My extras are organised correctly and respond to browsing super fast.
I never really thought about it before but your right. How narrow sighted "everybody" has been for years. lol

You are aware that viewing media within an emulator has been around for quite some time
and is definately not a new phenomena. So in retrospect you haven't re-invented the wheel
merely putting a smart tyre on it.
ressurectionx
There wouldn't be any problems with your setup as long as you point to whatever folder your media folder is located. The only thing that wouldn't work for you is if Madmab gets the emulator to automatically write all of the sub-directories for you. (Assuming you're naming them differently than mine). After choosing the media directory and then saying "no" to the auto-change, you'd have to reconfigure them all manually, for every emulator. That's why I think it would be easier for you to just rename your sub-directories to my names, regardless of where they are.

Also, you will not be able to help seed with your setup, which is a bummer. I want to get the regulars around here to help out seeding a system or two since my seed speed is crap on my own. Although, I do suppose you could just point the t0rrent program to your media folder after it's moved to where you prefer them. But you'd have to have the exact same sub-directory names and you'd have to set up each system like that. That's why I like to keep this all centralized. It's much easier for the work I do and it's easier to integrate with seeding and other external factors.

I'm vaguely aware that you could view media on PC emulators, but personally I loath the emulator experience on a PC so except for making some videos here and there I haven't used a PC emulator for years (even before my XBox work). I just got bored with it. Plus, like I said, the romsets and any media associated was not organized at all and looked like garbage and/or didn't even work unless you went to great lengths on your own to configure and rename everything properly.

Smart tires is what it's all about. Completely plug'n'play setup when it's done that can be left on your PC, untouched, for help with seeding.

Hey Madmab,

I'm going to have a lot of work ahead of me with that synopsis stuff I think. The NES was generally clean, but I had to fix about 7 different things. Each time you make a fix, you have to re-FTP the fixed file to the box and keep testing since it's likely that nearly every synopsis after the bad one will be bad itself.

It's cool though. In the end if it makes the code tighter and helps with other things, I don't mind doing it.

Later,
~Rx

EDIT: That being said madmab, I think whenever we iron out how the media browser works would be a good time to bring the other emulators all up to date when you get a chance. Then I can go in and fix all of the synopsis files in one sitting and make sure I don't miss anything.

QUOTE(Madmab)
Well I'm starting to work on the "Auto configuration" database for Winuaex which will be based on the configs provided by waal. Anywho the concept is to compare the values configured with the default values and if there are any differences they are stored in the database. The parameters checked are mostly ones that affect compatibility (Kickstart, Vid Chipset, etc). With a few exceptions that affect playability (cpu speed, mouse speed), etc.

Port 1-2, and Mouse Control are more an extension of the "Preset Controller Settings" which has not been implemented just yet.

For preset controller settings, my configuration files should be modified if we want to use the type of control
I posted in the "Winuae / Amiga Setup". "Mouse 1 Control" & Mouse 2 Control" must be put to "right" (currently it's left). I guess you can automatise this process because doing it for each file would be uhhh...
About the different kind of settings, please check the "Winuae / Amiga Setup" a bit later, I'm starting to write an update right now.

QUOTE(Madmab)

The only questionable options are the sound options. In my experience they generally don't need to be changed, but it does seem that occasionally a title comes along that sound better when these are modified.

Here are the settings I'm checking so far...

"Port 1 :"
"Port 2 :"
"Mouse 1 Control :"
"Mouse 2 Control :"
"Kickstart :"
"Extended ROM :"
"CPU :"
"CPU Speed :"
"CPU Compatible :"
"Cycle Exact :"
"Video Chipset :"
"Video Mode : "
"JIT Cache Size :"
"Chipmem Size :"
"Fastmem Size :"
"Slowmem Size :"
"Fast Copper :"
"Immediate Blits :"
"Collision Level :"
"Floppy Speed :"
"Sound Interpolation :"
"Sound Filter :"
"Sound Quality :"
"Mouse Speed :"
"Framerate :"

"Sound Quality :" is the only important parameter to keep regarding sound. Because of original emulation performances, it sometimes has to be set to "fast". The others are for comfort and I don't care of them.

Note I never use "JIT cache size:" for floppy game. If it's activated, then it is by mistake. Get rid of the value entered.

For "Mouse Speed :", I advice to set it to 200 by default instead of 100 otherwise it's too slow. I tried to adjust as much as I could while testing, but there were too many.

"Floppy Speed :" set to turbo is the best way for fast loading (of coz). But It doesn't always works due to original amiga disk format (they called it trackloading...). I activated it during my testings when it was possible but expect an update. No worry for the moment, all games load. It's just some could be optimized.

The other values are used and are of course important.

Oh and I used a trick for games requiring Cycle Exact to work but then runs slower: I just used a faster processor (68010 or 680c20). I know it's not genuine Amiga regarding the hardware profile but who cares when it's 100%.

Well thats a turn up Rx, just aquired 10 mins ago (very very cheaply) another setup which i shall dedicate to your config just for seeding purposes. So let it not be said i won't be pulling my weight.

Although im still right, as always. lol biggrin.gif

PS. I also don't use PC emulation. Doesn't seem arcadey/gamey !
ressurectionx
Hey madmab.... got another bug.

I'm not sure what happened with the "old" screenshots display, but the order seems way out of wack now. On a lot of the games, it starts at either the title screen or the Cart art instead of using the numbers 0001, 0002, 0003, 0004. It's kind of hard to explain, but you'll notice it right away if you use the screenshots instead of the enhanced artwork.

Also, the auto-advance doesn't work with the regular screenshots anymore.

I haven't tested out the advanced artwork at all because while I'm still adding games, I use the screenshots directory instead. (stupot1 just gave me 48 more to add cool.gif )

There is really no getting around the naming issues, that is quite simply an "xbox" issue. In fact most everything we are doing is a naming issue. As I've said in the past if you don't like the way the files are name tough tootsies. The same problem exists on a PC. I've yet to see a PC emu frontend setup that did not require the filenames of the screenshots, etc, to match the ROM names. But they have the convenience of over 42 character filename limits too.

If you don't like the way the no-intro sets are named the no-intro team is gonna tell you the same thing. Until someone steps up and creates some .dat files this is not gonna change.

The no-intro team has an interesting set of tools that make renaming files based on CRC. Anyone with half a brain can easily rename the sets to match their files if they so choose to. But most people will be too lazy to do it.

As far as use on PC, yes these sets will be quite adaptable to a PC format. Are PC people gonna use them? Not my concern. We have to get them working for the Xbox first since it has the 42 character file limit issue.

The new CRC system, if I manage to do it the way I wish, would be similar to how the filter feature works in Final Burn Legends (or even the Gamebase in Vice64). But it's gonna be a little more difficult to implement due to the flexibility given the user to rename and put files where they wish.

Yeah, could you please name one that has ALL the features that a the MednafenX_NES madamab edition will have? I'm just curious.. Front ends don't count, so don't even bother. laugh.gif There may be one or two emu's with various features, but NONE of them are on the Xbox, and none of them will be across the board like they will with the x-port emu's. My goal is to up the ante on "console" based emu's. I'm not particularly interested in competing with PC emu's because that would be an impossible task. A PC is way more flexible.

Yeah sorry about that. I kinda felt bad about it, but ultimately it boiled down too two things. 1) Misuse of astericks '*' in the synopsis and 2) I need it to be tighter in order to reduce the chances of sort and filter function choking. So I figured better to tighten it up now, then later.

Updating the emu's should be no big issue. For the most part that is something I've been doing on and off the last few months.

Luckily, by me storing those parameters as part of the "auto configuration" this wont be an issue. What I'm thinking of doing is storing the "selected pre-defined controller config" in there as well. If the emu can load it, then it will. If not, it will just use the default controllers the user has set-up. The reason I have to do it this way is because "technically" there can be any number of "pre-defined controller config's" and there is no guarantee they will be there. BUT.... That is why we are gonna work on including as many as we can with the emulator so, hopefully, this won't be an issue.

Thanks for the parameter suggestions. I'll make the appropriate changes. I'll give the mouse speed thing a go as well. I typically don't tinker with it, but if it doesn't seem to affect control too drastically then I'll go ahead and make that the default. So you really think I should set floppy speed to default to turbo? I was kinda hesitant to do that, but I'm unaware of the percentage of games that have an issue. I certainly do not remember running into a large number.

Thanks bud. We really do need all the help we can around here. As far as file naming preferences... That's always gonna be an issue. Everyone has their own preferred way of naming things. If you look at how the no-intro team has their screenshot downloads set-up, there are tools that make it possible to rename this stuff. Maybe someday I'll create a tutorial.

In the contrary, don't do this !!! Always set floppy speed to 100% by default if you don't find the value was modified by me. Because each game must be tested before to see if turbo mode suits. Otherwise loading can hang and game crash. This is something I check only after I have finalized a setting, means I did for some but not yet for all the games.

Don't nobody worry about collecting GameBoy boxes from thecoverproject. I'm in the process of going through them now. The only two places I can seem to find decent GameBoy images otherwise is MobyGames (with watermarks) and GameFaqs (usually very small images).

So.... Given those three sites I'm doing the best I can to get the highest quality boxart I can find, touch up what I can, and remove watermarks where I can.

Although Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance have excellent quality boxart across the board, I just don't think that will be possible for Gameboy with what is available out there now. I'm trying to make it look as good as possible though. At least it will be the best available Gameboy Boxart set out there for others to build upon in the future.

Things I'm waiting on now....

1) Madmab's updates to the beta emus so I can fix the synopsis files.
2) Gilles' generic boxarts for the systems I've listed on the other thread.
3) Dnyce's NES artwork pack so I can finish touching up all of the NES boxart.
4) A video for a missing Tennis game for the TG16 from pCeSlAyEr.
5) 150 or so Game Boy Advance videos.
6) Ex's updates to the Atari 2600 (and 7800?) lists.

We're getting really close now. If you have any games to add on any of the systems I'm doing that aren't in the spreadsheets already (or aren't clones of US games in the collection already), please let me know. Eventually I will have to close that door.

Later,

Happy New Year!

I am very excited about the RessurectionXtras. I am also very impressed with all the hard work everyone on the team is doing. It is really cool and I wish I had some resources to donate to the cause. I guess I shall strive to be the ultimate seeder when the time comes...don't have to be at home to make that happen laugh.gif

I most humbly make my small request. The instructions so far are pretty good and I know there has been talk of more instructions and faqs. I think it would be great if someone on the inside, someone who knows all the pertinent information, would make directions stepping someone through adding a game not in the final release - how to make a preview vid, where to place artwork, naming conventions, formatting guides, picture/video resolutions, etc. Maybe an entirely separate file tree structure for added games in order to keep the first release in its original form? I think it could add a lot to the value of the project making it easy and straight forward to add a new game with as much eye candy as possible. And include it as a readme or other file with the RessurectionXtras pack. Who knows what new awesome homebrew game might be released next?

What the ResX team is doing is tremendous and I hope the efforts live long past our beloved boxes. beerchug.gif
ressurectionx
Thanks bud,

I do plan on releasing the Xtras with more in-depth instructions, but it hadn't occurred to me to put something in there about adding games in the future. Good idea.

There will also be a specific directory structure that you will need to follow for all Xtras as well as the roms you have and other things that are included. This is very important because the favorites lists and .CUT files will depend on the roms being in the right place. Also, for the emus to work "right out of the box" they will depend on the files being located exactly where I have them on my box, otherwise you will have a lot of reconfiguring to do.

I'm very organized and my uploads t0rrents will be as well. It should be a snap for you to install when it's done and you shouldn't second guess removing your old setup to accomodate this new one because we have collected the very best for artwork/vids/etc., and everything will have been verified as working with each other at release time.

Thanks for the seeding offer.... we'll need all the help with that we can get.

Hi, ressurectionx! I haven't been to this site in a while because the last time I was around the whole scene seemed dead, and that's why I left. I'm glad to see its gaining interest in again, and it seems you have a lot to do with that. I just wanted to say thanks for all the work in getting people interested again. I hope more programmers get lured in and make some cool new apps/games/emulators! Keep it up!!
ressurectionx
Thanks Pulsemasta,

That's my hope.... that some coders come back or new ones come around and see what else is possible once this massive project is out the door.

I really think that this works so well that coders of PC emus and frontends will reshape emulators to work as easy as possible with the Xtras if they know about it. I don't know how to code much myself, but I'd have to imagine that coding around the Xtras would take 1/1000th of the time that it took to make them. Luckily for us, we've been blessed with Madmab and his effort on this for the last year and a half or so, so you'll be able to see the benefit of the Xtras right away when it's release time.

Keep coming around man. Lots of good stuff on the horizon.

I'm running out of things that need to be done besides upload prepwork. It feels good. cool.gif

Still need to try to get the best available artwork for Sega Game Gear. Still need to make a separate ZSNESXBox version of the artwork pack for SNES. Still need to get artwork, synopsis, videos and any other Xtras for the games I'll include in the Xtras X68000 pack. Still need to do adds for the Atari 2600 & 7800. Still need to whittle down the list of Atari 800 games to keep in the set before Xtras/Synopsis get made for them. Still need to make videos for Chip8. Still have to get good manuals for some systems and try to just get whatever is available out there. Still need to collect skins before any beta emus get released.

Possibilites.....

Maybe put together something for PSX one day. I'm not sure if I'll do it though since it's a monster task with mediocre payout with the status of playability of the emu now.

Maybe put together Xtras for the Vectrex since I have videos and boxart for it. It doesn't have an XPORT emu though so it's kinda pointless now.

Maybe put together Intellivision, TI-99, Commodore 64 and Amiga Xtras if somebody helps out with making working configurations for the controls.

And of course I'm going to try to get the best FBL and CoinOps Xtras packs together when all the console/handheld stuff is done. cool.gif

I have a big bundle of screenshots and artwork to be sorted for the Amiga. I organized a lot but I still have to rename them and to convert some. Then I must find the missing. wink.gif

Tomorow night I'll upload configurations examples for Madmab.

Oh and the great news is I found a script to automate the creation of hard drive files for Winuaex. I now have around 500 cool games ready to boot. It works fine and loads fast on windows and I made a system config for Madmab's beta. With the new features he designed with Killergorilla and this stuff, the Amiga will work like a console. I'll be back to you after testing this.

But now I'm going for a sleep. I've been back to work since two days and it looks like it's been a whole month.
