Cool. I'll get them in there.
I'm going through the Sharp X68000 right now. It's heartbreaking how many cool looking games are completely unplayable in Japanese.

Here's a list of 900+ playable games I tested a year ago. Got the settings, too. But I forgot to backup the roms before throwing my old xbox to the junk...

has it ever been (or can we create) an irc channel for this in addition to the thread? it's soooo much easier to talk there about issues.

if people want i can choose a server and channel and post info here for people to join. it's up to ress though since the channel should atleast have project owner and others:)

I can not, I tried that at first and twice my browser crashed around 300MB, that's why I broke it up.... I'm going to have to break the NES set up into 2 files too I think. I have garbage internet connection, and a garbage PC... not a good combo.

Also.... those sets are pretty much complete in most cases, if your counting US releases. Although there are no hacks or anything like that.

Hi Madmab. Thanks for your support. Don't worry, I just feel a bit depressed because of all these hardawre failure (xbox & pc) and some personal matters. Including frustrating job & interviews at the moment. But I'm not giving up. I think tomorrow I will buy one of these Lego basic boxes for a try. Then I'll start to regain confidence. biggrin.gif

I still have some X68K romsets on my HD, it's just I have to sort them and rename again.

And I know you're busy, too. All those emus, xtras, skins etc. are really exciting and makes me happy at the moment.

I was about to test a collection xbox side before the crash. 937 zipped HDF games and I know the first 50 work good. A few have issues but it's amiga side, nothing bad really. But there's no problemo, I made a backup just before the death of my beloved console. And I still have an updated version of the compatibility list to upload.

By playable, you don't necessecerrily mean "In English", right? Seems like way too many games for that. I was only able to come up with 150 games that were any good and I only had about 2,200 disks left to go through from the TOSEC set (Which I'm guessing was only like 800 more games max).

I found a large majority of the games unplayable or unenjoyable since they weren't readable. Pretty much why I gave up since only about 20% of the games that were playable weren't already emulated better on the Arcade emulators where you don't have to change disks all the time (and guess which disk you have to change since that message is never in English).

Sorry I can't do it man, but the more I tinkered with X68 the more I hated the system. I did give it about 2 days of labor though, so I tried.

The roms I did do are very well organized though. One zip for each game and the disks are labeled internally with the game name followed by [1], [2] or [A], [B], or [System], [User]. I'm sure the work I did could save somebody time if ever they were interested. Also my spreadsheet is pretty thorough for what I did cover before quitting.
waal
Many games are japanese but playable because they're arcade. I started like you with that 2200 disks collection. I first eliminated the multiple disks japanese games (a nightmare). But looking at my list again, I see duplicates and a few remaining adventure-otaku games. And now I remember I used to delete the crappy games without deleting the saves. I think I was around 500 when I gave up a year ago. And I kept the good arcade conversions. Just to compare with 16-bit machines of the time, not the arcade itself of course. I could still substract the bad games from the list because I still have the GARBAGE folder. But nevermind. I don't think it's a priority. I nearly have the same opinion as you regarding this bizarro computer. Even if some games are real rare gems.

Regarding disks, it's a bit like amiga (X68K is worse in fact). But I use to collect disks mainly for historical reasons and a few technical like save states. The hard drive versions will suit better. Especially for newcommers and we're lucky to have them working so early. Sadly X68K only have a few HD games, another reason why I quit. Note I've got hard drive solutions for the Atari ST too.

Can't keep focused anymore. Off to bed, it's 5:30...

Good night.
ressurectionx
There's no denying that for its time it was an amazing piece of hardware. The only thing we ever had in the states like that was the NeoGeo, but that was quite a few years later and there was no way my old man was going to shell out 600 bones for it. Hell... It played better games than what most of the PC games at the time were. The ports of arcade games that were even out at that time were flawless.

But today.... well..... we just really don't need it.

I just can't bring myself to work on the system, and in the 48 hours I was working on it I see-sawed back and forth many times about quitting it or pushing on. In the end, I had already accumulated 150 games and I started thinking about what a bitch it would be for me to try to get the videos, artwork and synopsis done for it by my self imposed deadline. When I thought that 80% of what I was keeping was emulated better elsewhere on the Box and about another 80 of the entire rom collections I've gone through were just deleted because they were unplayable I had to cut it.

You seriously must be MUCH more forgiving for Japanese text than I am. There is no way I could ever come anywhere near even 500 games for the system. I've already gone through 3 different sets before I grabbed (and shortly thereafter deleted) all of the TOSEC roms that I hadn't already covered in my spreadsheet. I think if I was being very generous testing the rest of the roms, I may have had a final collection of 200-250 roms total. (80% of those being games that were emulated better in CoinOPS/FBL)

When you see my other sets, you'll see that I actually include a ton of Japanese stuff. Probably much more than is warranted.

Oh no! You're going to miss that 2 line END GAME lame ass congratulations speach. That's right bitch.... The Princess is in another castle... whatcha gon' do 'bout it ma'phucka? (The actual translation of the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros before the FCC got to it....)

I really just axed the RPGs that were totally unplayable in Japanese (and a ton of those have already been translated and ARE included). This is usually on the earlier systems like the NES though where the text just didn't matter much in a platformer anyways, but it's also on the SNES, Genesis, Gameboys, and even the Game Gear (they just translated the last untranslated Lunar game on the Game Gear a few months ago)

Like I'd do with any emulator, I'll be happy to integrate any completed work people do for this system after I'm done with my work. I'm not going to just disappear in March, but I probably (hopefully) won't be posting here 10 times a day and working 10 plus hours a day on the project. I gotta move on, but I plan to be around to give suggestions and ideas to the new batch of ambitious OCDers like myself.

Hello all,

I am a complete newb in regards to the whole Xbox emu scene. I just bought a home of my own (22 - years old) and wanted a "Retro Gaming Center" for my game room to go along with my PS3 and what not. Long Story short I now have an Xbox with UnleashX loaded on it.

To be honest this thread is a little overwhelming - 139 Pages! I am looking for some guidance at to where to start. Page 1 looks awesome but everything is labeled as OLD. It is written to wait until march to D/L things but when I navigated to page 54 (March) I was a little lost, lol!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
SS

Hey, no problem. I've been down that road before. Lost months of work when my xbox hard drive crapped out on my son. Anywho.. This little break gives me a chance to work on BlissX real quick for "Carnage".

Bigby... Not much to say about Winuaex. Waal is doing most the work but he has got a bunch of .adf files and he's working on the whdload stuff. Basically he took some conversion program someone wrote and is running it against killer gorilla's whd files. Renaming the file with a ".whz" extension and he created a "_whdload.adf" file (or whatever it's name is) to load the stuff. The emulator kinda does the rest.

I created a database on his .adf files to "auto config" games for the user so that they do not necessarily need their files named the same and it works real good. Just pick the boot disk, answer "yes" for "use configuration", mount any extra disks in drives 2-4 and walaa. Piece of cake! I'll still need to add a bunch of CRC's to the database but that may be a while.

The preset controller stuff works real good. We have 4 presets for various Amiga game configuration and at the moment one game specific one. The emu loads the controller settings specified for the game. So for example if you decide you wanna change the "Standard Joystick" a little to match you needs better than the changes will work across the board. If you want settings specific to a game, just change them and it will remember them for that game. You can even save them and send to a friend!!

I consolidated two of the "in game" menu options so that the "in game" menu is not so crowded. Insert Disk for Drive 1-4, and Swap Disks are in one menu. The create HD/SD/HDF image options are in a seperate menu as well.

We could always use boxart, ingame and title shots. Manuals would be kinda nice too, and of course we could use some movies.

Good night.
I knew I missed replying to something.. When messing with the "ST Gamebase" files I noticed alot of them where in "hard drive format" so I modified WinstonX to extract the files and map the hard drive to them (or something like that).

Anyways, if you want, I can send it your way. It's been a while since I compiled it, so hopefully nothing got foobared with the latest changes. Anyways.... do you think the ST could use some preset controller configs? I can add that to WinstonX if need be. Auto config, though, is kinda pointless. laugh.gif

I plan to release a collection of games that were never released on the amiga:
http://forum.classicamiga.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2322
http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=14998

And then perhaps a top 200 of the machine. I used an Atari ST for sometime before the Amiga and the latest is far superior (ancient rivalry...).

These might be HD versions. I know two solutions similar to WHDload for the ST. Didn't actually try them yet and yes, your build will be very useful. wink.gif

Didn't use so much winstonX. But there's not much difference with the amiga. Maybe it's simpler: Space bar is used more often than left mouse button for games, sometimes F1 to start. Then it's mouse or joystick.

Lemon Amiga... One of the source I used to collect screenshots. Along with Gamebase, Amigame and Hyperspin.
Did you succeed to read the database ? The info would be good to use for synopsis. Otherwise, I was thinking about extracting gamebase data from access.

@Bigby

Great collection, man. Before we send archives to each others I suggest we build a common "database". You could use utilities like Filelister to generate text files for a start. Then we'll see what to take and then start working.
And it would be good to have an FTP.
wimpyRBX
If we lack synopsis for amiga i might be able to help.
check out: http://84.202.35.197/mobyripper/

type inn for example: http://www.mobygames.com/game/amiga/addams-family and press scrape.

if lemonamiga has better info for the synopsis i'll make a scraper for that aswell.

ps! it is not the intent of this mobyripper to scrape manually each game. i'll script it to do entire systems. it's just an example page to show how the synopsis might look.

give me your thoughts. easiest way: join the irc chan mentioned in the posts above.

cheers

Just completed my scraper to scrape an entire section on mobygames.
Running a few valid-checks but it seems solid enough for me to supply complete synopsis's on systems wanted.

Sumchecks (needs to be added manually after synopsis creation)
Gametitle
Platform
Region (needs to be added manually after synopsis creation)
Media (needs to be added manually after synopsis creation)
Controller (needs to be added manually after synopsis creation)
Genre
Release Year
Developer
Publisher
Players (needs to be added manually after synopsis creation)

Testing it out on Playstation as we speak and will post the example synopsis when done.

I tried Speedball II for the amiga. It appears that mobygames has enough informations. I don't think we'd need Lemon datas after all.

The following informations should be enough. Of course it's only my opinion.

gametitle: Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe
Alternate titles: # "speedball 2" - european title (can be useful sometimes)
Publisher: Image Works
Developer: Bitmap Brothers, The
Year: 1990
Genre: Action, Sports

Non-Sport: Sci-Fi / Futuristic

Also for: Currently none It should be filled with Amiga, Amiga CD32, Atari ST, Commodore 64, DOS, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Genesis, J2ME, SEGA Master System, Windows Mobile, Xbox 360. (I find this interesting if you like comparing ports or get a revamped version like they did for this game)

Controller: Yes, it can be added because I'm currently filling this column in my spreadsheet. But I think it will be manual edition because I'll provide presets for the xbox pad (like x for space). So it should indicate both type of control and mapping.

Players: Don't have the info. Doesn't seem very important to me... It's only the way I see it. This info is available on Lemon, though.

Lemon also indicates Hardware (AGA/OCS) and number of disks but the games are already set and zip name indicates that so do we care ?

Region: euh... means Europe/US ? Well, my collection is Europe but US compatible and in rare cases the region is indicated in the title if I remember correctly (NTSC/PAL).

Media: Floppies & Floppies. And even when it HD installed, it comes from... floppies. I don't like CD32 rips. And none of the CDTV/CD32 titles I have in stock will be added. I don't think they are worth to be used on the xbox.

I mean the last two are not necessary for the amiga.

Of course there will be other needs for systems like Megadrive/Genesis/32X for instance.

edit:
Seen the preview. Awesome.

thanks, hope it helps..

AMIGA EXAMPLE (SAME LAYOUT AS PSX)
this layout can be changed pr system without a problem smile.gif

i tried fetching playerinfo etc from lemonamiga and the rest from mobygames but that's not possible since there is no link between the two. lemonamiga uses ID and mobygames uses GAMETITLE. So from me it's either moby or lemon.

EDIT: the info from lemonamiga i can put in a file and upload so it's easier than loading each and every page to update manually. you can just look up the info from lemonamiga in the file. makes it easier i think.

EDIT2: also_for is scraped so for some games mobygames has linked them to other sections. I can put that in the bottom of the description of the game perhaps ? or it's own field ?

one thing before i make an example for amiga using your desired layout. Isn't the synopsis's meant to be the same layout in every system or doesn't it matter ?

It helps a lot. That's fantastic.

To me there are specific infos to be added depending of the system. Now, Rx and Madmab will tell about it. I've just made suggestions for this system.

Edit:

-Then Moby will be enough.
- NTSC/PAL ? Why not. These games were designed for PAL (320x256) but very often they have a black border at the bottom to display on NTSC screen (320x200). I must check my games, because I think a few are PAL only (Unreal) and some have alt versions (Battle Squadron). But no worry, it's rare. Can be corrected manually.

Ok I'll wait for a reply from one of them (or both) before i change the layout and scrape entire amiga then smile.gif
EDIT: if we get a GO signal from rx/madmab to make synopsis for amiga the way you want it just reply how and in what order you want it and I'll start. Shouldn't take long to do the entire 95 pages of games. took a few minutes to do three pages.

Regards,
SS

I'll help you out if you tell me how you managed to buy a house at 22 in this market.

Hey wimpy.... that synopsis looks great. You need to scrape the URL and put that at the very bottom of each one though. I like giving credit where credit is due. cool.gif

P.S. I hate you. That would have taken me ages to put together. Where were you 8 months ago???? laugh.gif

Credit is no problem! I'll put the url in the bottom after the description smile.gif (i'll do that for whatever system so it's the same for all)

P.S. I actually hate myself aswell, glad to see you still standing upright even tho i'm here helping out ;D
ressurectionx
Sounds good. Make sure to put a space in between the last paragraph and the url like on mine. cool.gif

Also worth mentioning, any lines that begin with an asterix "*" will have to be changed to a "-". The asterix is used in the code for the synopsis to determine which game to display. Any extra "*"'s throw a wrench into it. I'm sure you'll figure out something to have that done in minutes instead of me doing that by hand for a billion games too.

If there are two asterix on a line together, like I often do in between letters of the alphabet, that is okay. It's just a single * with a space before words that will mess things up.

Also, any spaces after the Top and Bottom asterix, as well as the middle one separating the headline and body info need to be removed or they will cause issues as well.

Please make sure to put all the categories in the headline info, even if they are blank. I'm sure we could easily fill them in at the end since it seems that the info you can't scrape is some of the most generic of all the items and should be real quick to finish.

Is it possible for you to scrape all US releases first, and then if there are games that came out in Europe that didn't in the US you scrape those last?

I always separate them like that in my synopsis files.

Thanks for this man. At least it should be much easier for anyone who tackles a computer based emu I didn't do to get a synopsis put together. I'm sure you'll be saving several people like waal a ton of time. I'm not sure if Carnage by Bob has done a synopsis for the Intellivision either. You two should discuss it since he's already don a TON of other work otherwise for the system.

Ok..

(just to be 100% sure):
1) "Any extra "*"'s throw a wrench into it." <- this is only true for the START of a line right ? If there is a '*' in the middle of the description that's ok?
2) the lines starting with '*' must NOT have any spaces before or after the * right ?

When it comes to the switch between US/NON-US I'm very sorry, but that's not possible since mobygames don't have that information as far as i can see.. :/

You must complete missions which range from collecting something and getting out alive to much harder and complicated things. Your car is armed with many weapons including mines, rockets, lasers, smokescreens, and more.

Then, if you get bored playing by yourself you can eliminate your opponent in multiplayer missions where you have to destroy the other car, or a game mode called "Pass the Bomb", where you must pass the bomb to the other car by touching it before you blow up.

007: The World is Not Enough is a James Bond game based on the movie of the same name.

When British oil tycoon and M's friend Sir Robert King is killed in a bombing at the MI6 headquarters, it becomes James Bond's new assignment to protect his daughter and heir Elektra from further harm. Renard, a man who can't feel physical pain due to a bullet in his head, seems to play an important role in the sabotage of the ongoing construction of the new King pipeline, which can give oil to all the world for the future. The three competing pipelines all end up in Istanbul, whereas the King pipeline is being laid elsewhere, and therefore is an easy goal to anonymous attackers. James Bond involuntarily teams up with emancipated Dr. Christmas Jones, and they soon find out that there is more threat to the situation than just some pipeline sabotage.

Like Goldeneye it is a first-person shooter with controls and multiplayer options designed with console facilities in mind. It features 10 levels and three difficulty levels. The levels and dialogue are all taken directly from the movie. It also features clips and other items from the movie.  However, the game has been almost completely revamped from the original Goldeneye.

The new system throws out the free-form game play and adheres to a much more linear "cinematic" style of play. All of the sound and graphics have been completely upgraded, looking completely different than Goldeneye, but also allowing the use of authentic voice overs. The game expands upon use of gadgets (lasers, grapple hooks, darts) by incorporating them into a new weapon and item system.

The game includes a four-player multiplayer mode, this time with the ability to play with bots. Some levels are taken from single-player mode, while others are exclusive to multiplayer. There are new games modes such as king-the-hill, capture the flag, and bases which have been added since the last game. Like the last game, cheats can be unlocked through fast play speeds, but now also unlock new multiplayer maps and modes as well as traditional cheats.

If you approve the code above I'll start on PSX.
As soon as I get a synopsis layout approved for AMIGA I'll do that aswell.
ressurectionx
1) Yes. This is only true at the start of the line.
2) Yes. Lines starting with "*" must have no other spaces or characters in them period.

There should only be 4 types of lines that begin with the "*"
1) Line above CRC
2) Line in between headline and body
3) Line after body (URL)
4) Lines indicating a new letter "*************A**************"

Also, I'm pretty sure it's just the quotebox/forum doing it, but it looks like you may have 2 spaces between paragraphs and between the last line and the URL. Is that just my eyes playing tricks on me?

If I were you, I'd just glance over the synopsis to see how different things may be handled one last time before you begin. I think you got it down pretty sweet, but there may be a surprise waiting for you. If you got anymore questions, just let me know.

PS. Don't sweat the US/Europe stuff. It was worth a shot.

Okay... there should be one space between each paragraph, and one space between the last paragraph and the URL. (Sorry for the confusion)

Thanks for that link. I'm too busy to sit down and chat right now, but I will start using that feature. I think it sounds like a great idea for all of us to communicate faster with each other. If I like it after I try it, I will mention it near the top of my thread so anybody can easily join.

Question... is there a way that we could verifiy people with an email address or something? I'd hate for Joe Schmo to hobble on in with RessurectionX as his handle and start saying things to piss people off.

Could you do the atari 800 stuff for me? I'm not sure how your doing your scraper, but for the Atari 800 there is a link I have to click on (show all games) to get to them all. Because the default Moby list only show a "best of". Anywho it should make work on the synopsis go better (if I can ever get back to it laugh.gif ).

sure smile.gif
this goes for all systems not synopsised yet: as long as the system has a section on mobygames it can be scraped like the others.

i'll put this on the todo list. i'm finishing PSX first to see if it meets with RX's approval.

Man you suck...

Really dude. 1 hour and 10 minutes? That would have taken me 3 months.

Aside from missing a few of the headline categories, it's perfect. I'll have to add the main info on the top and explain that this synopsis isn't categorized like my other ones, but since I was planning on ditching the PSX work completely this is much more than anyone was ever going to get. We don't have to delete games that aren't included. They won't mess anything up. Somebody will just have to put my CD names in there and rename their own images to those names. I'd consider t0rrenting the collection if it wasn't about 25 GB or something like that. It's just too damn big to reasonably distribute, which is a shame because I spent about 2 months unzipping, renaming, altering the .cue file, and rezipping all the games to work perfectly on the Box when they're unzipped. That's after the 6 or so months it took to download all of them.

Just kidding about the you suck part. I'm glad that this will be available for people who do emulators I didn't in the future. This was the single biggest pain in the ass about making the Xtras. Well... videos come close, but those with an artistic mind seem to enjoy that process a bit more than I hated the miserable synopsis.

Thank god for beer... beerchug.gif

Thanks again.... I'll update it with the stuff that's on all the other emus and a few tweaks and get it posted in the synopsis thread.

Later,

Stop the train! Don't use that PSX.. I found out I can fetch even more from mobygames.. I'll make a new synopsis tomorrow! smile.gif

Saves some work atleast.. Will provide a new link tomorrow.

And thanks for the kind words mate.. Like I've said I wish I'd found you guys earlier.

Great collection, man. Before we send archives to each others I suggest we build a common "database". You could use utilities like Filelister to generate text files for a start. Then we'll see what to take and then start working.
And it would be good to have an FTP.

Think we have the same screenshots, waal. Mine are mainly from gamebase amiga and lemon amiga too. smile.gif

I generated those txt files you mentioned anyway (useful app by the way).

Amiga screenshots lists

Also, over at the emumovies forums there are discussions on making Amiga videos. I have an FTP account with them, so I can grab what they have done so far.

FYI for CD based systems (like PSX, Sega CD, and TG16 CD) the synopsis code will look for the closest name match. So I would suggest the game name and then the SLUS id for maximizing the chances that the user will get a hit..

For example

Grand Theft Auto SLUS_9999

In the synopsis would get a match on a .cue, directory, or .bin name of...

Grand Theft
SLUS_9999
Grand Theft Auto
Grand Theft Auto SLUS_9999

Well I think you get the idea.
