Wow. Just. Wow.
I read this post during a physics lecture and I actually said "holy fuck" loud enough to catch the attention of everyone around me.
Who then proceeded to laugh their ass off at what was apparently done by a blind mechanic.

He was supposed to use double stick tape and rivets underneath, not sheetrock screws. haha. What an idiot. The guy who owned the shop thought that was passable(quality wise)?

I can speak from experience that fiberglass body kits are a pain in the arse to work with, but on that note there is no excuse for work like this. I work in my 2 car garage on projects like this one and would never allow any thing to look this way. Never paint this kind of stuff on a car never your just asking for paint problems. Fit, Trim, Prep, Prime, Seal, Base, Clear. Lots of work but it pays off in the end. Notice how the metallics in the paint do not even look even. Thats what happens when your spraying a gun toward the ground..

This brings our case to whole other level.
Since the repair costs are so high now, the car can be deemed totalled. I mean, it's half the value of the car already.
correct me if im wrong but wouldnt repair costs have to
exceed the value of the car for it to be totaled?
unless he means its half the purchase price, in which case resale value might be lower
lostboyz

I forget the percentage, maybe it depends on what insurance you have but 50% of the cost of the vehicle seems a little low. It also depends on the type of damage. Thats to just consider it totaled, which will help him in any court battle.
twistedsymphony
Dec 2 2008, 03:38 PM
I think it depends on the state and the insurance company
but in some situations half the value = totaled
I believe this is the case because the insurance company can get X amount of dollars in scrap no matter how bad the damage is...
So If [damages] > [Z value] - [value of sellable scrap] then TOTALLED
most cars you can buy back from the insurance company if they total them, and the buy back price is what they estimate the value of the scrap to be.
I know a co-worker of mine was recently in an accident and needed repairs totaling 60% of the vehicle value and they totaled it.
This Z is worth what? 18-22K so 14K in damages would definitly put it in totaled range.

That new-found damage just takes the cake... I hope for his sake that it works out, and he gets a 370Z at the end of it all
It all depends on insurance companies, their policies and all that... Hopefully he'll be able to sue the shit out of the guy who screwed up his Z... This kinda shit makes me angry.

he apparently contacted his insurance company and despite having full coverage, they don't cover damages like this since they're consider "poor workmanship"

im not surprised, the shop owner should have some sort of business insurance to cover the damage
otherwise its time for him to contact some lawyers

just look up jdm vip, you will be horrified to find they do that on purpose. Also part of it comes from bagging a car

yeah I'm not into the whole VIP stance thing, but I do think it looks good if that's what you're going for.
they certainly don't drive very well like that. I don't think that Z is on bags either, I think it's just dumped on coil-overs air-bags are more of a VW thing... most dumped Nissan guys are straight coil-over.

BTW the court case is over, he won but only got $5500 out of it.... IIRC his repairs were around $8K and it was another 3-4K to repaint and install the new kit once the repairs were done.

you will NEVER see my 240 with alignment like that.
I do have a tough decision to make though, the wheels I bought were mounted with stretched tires from the previous owner... do I put them on as is or keep driving on the OEM wheels until I can afford properly sized tires for them?
grim_d
Dec 14 2009, 09:25 PM
Personally I would wait for the tyres. Tyres are not meant to be stretched regardless of what anyone says.
Some of the drift boys run stretches but they are on a track. So if the tyres fail in anyway theres no huge danger.
How much of a stretch is it?
twistedsymphony
Dec 16 2009, 08:47 PM
it's not that much of a stretch but the lip of the rim definitely sticks out past the rubber :-/
I mean normally I'd just stack wheels in my garage but I put cardboard between each wheel because they'd be metal/metal contact otherwise.
