If your xbox is modded to run unsigned code than it will run this. Savegame exploits, modchips... just give it a try.

Last time i used DSL on my xbox was a year and some ago. ran great. Can only imagine it's come even further. Props to the devs for keeping on it.
bassquake
Can this be installed alongside a loopback installation of 0.6 one?
alexh
Nice work. My thanks to whoever put the hard work in to bring us this release.

I'll have to have a try if for nothing else than using FireFox instead of LinksBoks
GOVATENT
Sweet! I want to solder some new ram into my console. I use my 360 for live now and my old console for old offline games/xbmc.
stevewal
Hi,
Yea this ones my work smile.gif

You can install xdsl 0.7 loopback along side xdsl 0.6 loopback, by renaming E:/xdslfs to eg. xdslfs0.6, and then editing E:/linuxboot.cfg from
CODE
rootfs_name=xdslfs
to
CODE
rootfs_name=xdslfs0.6
. Then install xdsl 0.7 beta as normal.
Yes it's as simple as that.

You can have as many loopback installs as you like as long as you have space on your disc.
DMAddict
Lookin' forward to giving this a try. Am I missing something, your wiki page only looks like it has v 0.6 and the XDSL folder on xbins is empty. I'll go ahead and use the link from Neptune.
brandogg
Are we able to use HDTV resolutions yet...1080p? I've always had problems getting Xdsl to fit my screen properly, though it is a great distro I must say.
stevewal
hi,
Xdsl0.7beta is on the wiki main page.
As far as I am aware the xbox can't output 1080p.
xdsl outputs 640x480 by default, but can use 420p 800x600 and 720p. This all depends on your tv/monitor. some might work and some might not.

As of xdsl0.6 xorg or Xfree86 can be used and configured for better compatibility. You will need to edit their config files with the correct modelines for your tv.
brandogg
I'm an idiot, I meant 1080i (though my TV is 1080p). Thanks for the tips, I'm going to try that.
c-2
your download is out of bandwidth on the site .. maybe you should make some mirrors using rapidshare , megaupload , uploaded.to etc ..

can't wait to try this! :]

edit: thanx Neptune for the sendspace link.

That's so awesome! Thank you a lot for your continous work on X-DSL! Thank you!!!!

Thanks stevewal looks nice!

After playing a little with this some things that do not work for me are

1. Virtual Keyboard not working for me if i want loopback install!
2. If i do a loopback install i cant start it!
3. Is the 2gb loopback limit fixed?

please help me what do i wrong?

stevewal
Agitator
could you start it in terminal by typing:- xvkbd.sh (and hit return).
Then give me the errors it shows.

bassquake
Hi.

Thought Id add my findings after very briefly playing around:
  • When shutdown, the background stays as it is, and the 'shutdown' text writes over it. Dont know if this is intentional but being blue text makes it difficult to read.
  • Mouse Config stays on value 6. Itll apply the new value, but when Ok then open again, its back to 6. So cant change mouse speed.
  • Why does a circle line appear when right click on desktop icons? Its a bit ugly.
  • Icons arent as nice as 0.6 but dont know if thats because of the theme used.
  • Firefox tends to sometimes just quit or hang when watching youtube videos.
  • Eject button on the CD mount box stays down sometimes and have to press it twice and often doesnt mount CD, says "too many mounted file systems" but only hd55 is mounted.

Overall, its a good start! biggrin.gif

ps. Sorry for the hijack but I finally found how to get digital sound out to the optical (or coax if youve done my mod!). Go here for how: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=668663

bassquake,
Just to answer a few questions.

The Shutdown Background has now been solved for the next release

The mouse config app only appears on number 6 but does actually work. This app is down to dsl and not me. I might try to make it more intuative when I get some time.

The circle is dfm file manager which is now the default for dsl desktop

The icons are dfm too

Firefox Does seem to crash a bit more than the last version. Sometimes it's just a scrolling function in jwm (scrolling on the window margin will cause it to shade). Flash player is always a problem with firefox, and this browser more than the last one. But as this is a newer one you can install addons like flashblock which can block the flash adverts in youtube etc

The eject button stays down signalling the tray has been ejected. Press again for the tray to automatically close. (I might change this though)

Cheers,
Steve.

i used the ftp method to install this but when i run in the screen goes black, and my tv says its a mode not supported, the the xbox box jewel light changes to green (i have it set to red) and then goes orange every now and then, it seems like something is running but nothing comes up. I have had similar problems in the past with other distros. i was thinking cause i was using the the hdtv cable cause of the mode issue but i cannot test, anybody having these issues or know why i am, any help would be great!
run088
When I run the apt-get update out of the tips and tricks section you posted Steve I get a problem everytime about some pcmcia-cs configuration. This happens in version6.6 and beta 7.I have been searching for answers and am turning up little of anything myself.

Can you or anybody come up with anything to help me out?

stevewal
hi run,
I think I've had the same bug but I can't remember how to get it. If your trying to upgrade to sarge or etch, it probably won't work now as dsl has changed quite alot and is'nt so compatible with debian. however you can get many etch apps to work by downloading the debian files manually and extracting them into the filesystem, and looking for dependancies, and repeating untill either the app works or it does'nt.

If you give me the exact senario, I can have a look too, but I'm not sure I will get any further than you.

Cheers,
Steve.
run088
I guess it is kind of weird.I figured out how to get around the pcmcia-cs error.I had to install a blank file in etc/init.d/pcmcia It was trying to update a file that was not there once I made it the pcmcia error stops.

This will get around that but there are still 3 more packages to be installed that wont because of the next error I get.Either way it seems you can still get use out of apt-get without them installed I did it on a build all the way to ecth and these where the only 3 that has problems.Anyway it says it is having trouble overwriting /bin/chgrp

That file exists but if I try the same trick it still throws the error. This is a little different because it points out that that file also exist in coreutilities package.I just have not found out where that is as of yet to give a look.

The 3 packages left are

fileutils
shellutils
textutils

Fileutils is what is giving the error.
run088
The other 2 packages are both related to the coreutils as well. Both the textutils and the shellutils give errors just like the fileutils does about overwriting a file.I ran an upgrade individually for each so I could see there snag. All 3 have overwriting errors to files that have links to the coreutils package.I already gave the problem file for fileutils even tried for an upgrade on the coreutils package but it said it was up to date.
The others are for

textutils = /bin/cat

shellutils = /bin/date

It seems to all tie into coreutils but that is as far as I can get so far.

I tried copying the files elsewhere then deleteing them because it said it had a problem overwriting them but it did no good the errors were still there.I also tried a blank file and that did not work either. There is definitly something up with the error and the coreutils package.

Does this tell you anything?

I am going to do a little research on the coreutils package and see if I cant find a way to shed a little light on the problem.

On another note. The current vnc that comes with the build does not work for me.I can however grab another newer version from mydsl that does work but whenever you push the icon on build 6 or beta 7 it does not respond. You can run this command however to start it up

/usr/local/bin/vnc4x.sh

or

/user/local/bin/vnc4x0.sh

My question is why when you download and install this app why does it give both of these versions?Either one seems to work from what I can tell.

And how do you make the icon work instead of having to type the command?

Also how do you get rid of icons also that you dont want or that dont work?

And lastly how do I share files?

I have been racking my brain for days on how to do these things.I have found linux is not so hard to learn it is just hard to find the answers in a way you can understand without learning by trial and error which consumes massive amounts of time. Then again if it was to easy I know I would not have as much interest in learning it anyway.
insanepotato
thanks for the update =]

i dont know if its just plecibo, but im convinced this version runs faster than 0.6, and the text is definitly clearer.

HI.
I'VE RUN INTO A BIT OF A SNAG HERE.
my hard drive with all my development stuff just gave up. Constant clicking is all I get out of it now. So I've lost about a months worth of work.

Oh well I'm sure worse things happen at sea. But it's back to the drawing board here.

Run, Keep me informed of any progress there. Cus it would be great to upgrade. You can make an icon as described in the dsl wiki in the link I've put on the top bar in firefox. For 0.7 just right click on a desktop icon and click create
Opoth
Try throwing the HDD in the freezer overnight. It should give you about 15-20 minutes to pull anything off that you need once you reconnect it. I've used this trick 2 or 3 times and its worked great.

I second Opoths advice. The HDD in the freezer has also worked for me and its a well known trick to use on a dead hard drive to get it working again for a short period of time to pull important data off.

Anyone else getting weird lockup's once flash9 is installed? Also how do I get the 2gb loop back file system to work like the 56mb loop back setup does?

--This is for my boys systems (only need flash and openoffice w/cups and all should be good)

stevewal
Hi,
Flash player has always been unstable on xdsl/dsl. It's only recently that anyone has got it to work at all. If you getting lock ups in the whole system and not just firefox, then please start firefox in the terminal and give me the error message when the crash happens. You could try switching to fluxbox window manager instead of jwm (look in the exit options) this might help. There is a problem with jwm where firefox does'nt shut down properly when flash crashes firefox. Issue the command "killall firefox-bin" to make sure there's no firefox process left in the background.

When i trying to install some program, X-DSL wrote that i must to do loopback or native partitions. I trying to start loopback partition and when I choose Hda 50 E:/ it wrotes me "Error mounting partition. error writing etc/mtab.tmp: no space left on device". And when i choose hda55 F:/ it wrotes: Error mounting partition. mount:/mnt/hda55not mounted already, or bad option".

What it means? What I do wrong?

P.S. And I have some question about xvkbrd. I used the old version of X-DSL before, and i don't have a problem to wrote a text in Mozilla Firefox, but in this vertion when i trying to wrote on the virtual keybord there is no result. What i must do to wrote the text?

Thank you. And sorry for my English. ph34r.gif
stevewal
OK I've finally got my sh-t together after loosing all my work twice, yes twice. Just bad luck unfortunately. I'm backing everything up (in a slightly paranoid way) now lol.

Anyway I've tried to iron out some of the bugs for this next release. The next beta download is available on the xdsl site.

I'm sorry I'm not able to help out with all the problems here as I'm really no linux genius. I'm just an average linux user who uses Xdsl all the time, and hopefully gradually improves it.

Fluxbox on this release is now fully featured and, may be a better alternative to joes window manager (default). lunuxrc has been updated. Firefox gtk2 and flashplayer scrips have been updated to take in changes to download site changes. Unfortunately flasplayer has been relegated to the macromedia archives, which take a long time to download but at least we still have a functioning flash player. the firefox script has been updated to use the debian sid mplayer plugin. This is a big improvement on the old plugin that flickered all over the place if it came up too large for the screen.

Firefox is still crashing with flash, as it always has done in xdsl but anoyingly staying running in the background. For now I've added an item in the start menu to kill firefox, which does the trick.

oh and the tray button on the dock will reset for eject or close.

Xvkbd (keyboard) will unfortunately not stay on top in jwm and needs to be focused for each new window. For those people without a usb keyboard, it may be easier to switch to fluxbox window manager (click exit on start menu)

Cheers,
Steve.

You rock for releasing a new version of xdsl - I'm still wondering how do I install to a 2gb loopback file system (I'd install to a native F partition if I could figure out how to make F a 2gb ext or whatever partition and a G for the *rest of the drive* (oh say 400gb - has to stay fatx "we like fatx....") so I could have my boys systems be "all they can be" systems, I even ran cat5 to the 6yr room so he can paint in xdsl.....

--Please advise on how I do the loopback install and still have xromwell load the proper kernel and stuff...
donofrio
does anyone know why I cannot mount both hda55 and hdb55 on my xdsl boot session (live loopback stock mode) I'd like to quickly transfer files back and fourth and so far I'm stuck in ftp for the requirement....
brandogg
Yeah that's the only problem, and I thought I could get around it - using a G partition as well. I made a G partition using XBPartitioner, and copied all my Apps, etc to G. Then I chose native install, because it says it will only wipe out and format your F partition...well that's not exactly true, it will also delete any other partitions above F and format the remainder of your drive as one big F partition. Is there any way to change the XDSL setup to install to G instead? That would be much better.

Hi.

I got this wireless keyb/mouse device.

But it doesnt work in xdsl. It works in Ubuntu 8.04-64 on a pc, so is it possible to somehow get the drivers or usb stack used in Ubuntu and use it in xdsl? Or is it a hardware issue? The keyboard doesnt work in xbmc. It works on the 360 though.

ps. How do I view the boot info as something pops up about it but it goes too quick to view it properly.

All in all, ace job, thanks.
brandogg
If it's plug & play, then it should work. I use some generic wireless eyboard/mouse from Wal-Mart, it works fine for me. Also, if it doesn't work in XBMC, then it probably won't work in xDSL, at least not without some drivers.

Hey guys,

Ive just picked myself up an Xbox to set up as a media center, Unfortunatly it is a 1.6 which seems to be an issue everywhere I look. I got the screen fix down, But I cannot enable any resolutions higher than 480p or I get a blank white or yellow screen.

I have done a small search on this, And discovered mention of manually setting my overscan in the XFree86 config file (I have upgraded to XFree86).

I however, Am a complete linux noob. Can someone help me out here or point me in the right direction? I cannot save this file (Permission Denied). I have found some settings for a similar display here:
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Model...abase#DU-37LZ30
ModeLine "ATSC-720-60p-no-over" 74.16 1192 1310 1343 1648 672 700 705 750 +HSync +VSync

However mine is a 37LG30 But I will see if this works, If not I assume I will be able to recover my desktop by booting into text mode?

Thanks in advance.
defyboy
Well, I did that. Now I get a Blank black screen followed by a blue screen, Any suggestions on how to repair this?

Yes, the keyboard is plug n play. No drivers are needed for Xp, vista or ubuntu. So I dont know why its not working on the xbox yet does on 360.

Do you know what make your keyb/mouse combo is?

Carrying on about my wireless keyboard. I notice on bootup, the following is stated:

QUOTE
cloop: Initializing cloop v2.02
usb.c: unable to get device descriptor (error=-110)
usb.c: unable to get device descriptor (error=-110)
INIT: Entering runlevel: 5
usb.c: unable to get device descriptor (error=-110)
usb.c: USB device 22 (vend/prod 0x45e/0x284) is not claimed by any driver.
Starting X...

So its detecting it, but cant find info for it.

I found this site which mentions some people having trouble with it in Ubuntu:

http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-356280.html

I tried adding that info to the /etc/X11/xorg.conf to no avail.

Also please can someone tell me where the info that loads up during boot is saved somewhere like a boot log. Thanks.

Any help appreciated.

ps. Should I start my own thread on this?

brandogg
I believe it's made by Micro Innovations or some crap like that. Have you tried simply using a different USB port? Sometimes xDSL acts weird for me and I have to switch ports, even if was already working during the current session.

I noticed nobody had any suggestions as to what could be the problem here. Is that still the case?

I have something similar or the same. I had Xdsl 0.5 on my 1.4 Xbox which somebody is borrowing.
As I've read emulators seem to run better in Linux, and with the last ScummVM being over a year old, I thought I'd give it a try on my 1.3.
So again I have the 3 files in E:/KNOPPIX. The .xbe in E:/Apps/Cromwell and the .cfg at E:/.
'Linux' shows in Apps on the display. Select (A) it and the screen goes black for about 10 seconds. Then the green LED on the front of the Xbox starts flashing and the sound I can't source exactly but I'd say it's either the fan or the hard drive spinning very fast. That lasts for about 3 or 4 seconds and then the Xbox shuts down.
I'm running a PAL Xbox with Enigmah to NTSC and a component to VGA adaptor at 480p (as in the HD mode 720x480). The same set up I used the last time.
One thing I do remember is last time in 0.5 I had to change something in the .cfg. I think, not sure, it was resolution as it had 800x600 and I changed it to 720x480. This time the .cfg is 640x480. I tried that and 720x480. I just get the same result every time though.
Any ideas?
Red_Breast

I just tried with a composite lead plugged into a line-doubler with VGA output and it's working. I'm sure I used a component to VGA adaptor last time but that must be the problem. It's not so bad as I can set it to XGA 1024x768. Helps. A little. Slightly. I think.
I do have a Frozen cable which I can use on another Sony monitor (SoG 4:3) with Krayzie's extras but I've never got it working on the usual monitor I use for Xbox (not SoG) with any of Frosty's apps. I believe it supports all VGA IDs.
I think I'll just look out for a cheap KVM switch or something as I like to use the Sony with the PC.

Yeah, tried that.

Mouse and keyboard also works on the ps3 fine too, so really have no idea why its not working. When I plug it into an xp pc, it'll load as hids. And its not using usb2 so it should be fine with the xbox usb1.

There must be someway of getting x-dsl to use it as it detects it on boot.

Need help - take two on attempting a loopback install....clicked the "install loopback" script and it ran (I also tried the frugal install but the 0.7.2 stated that you cannot unmount knoppix while its mounted - duh thats a true statement but how does this frugal install work anyhow?) and I choose to create a 2gb loopback install (this is for my family and I figure they need flash9 and openoffice 3 with cups and then they should be good) so how in zeus's butt do I get this to transfer the live knoppix to the loop back and populate the correct files to allow it to not get detected by xromwell and then state its missing linux24? someone have a howto dor xdsl that shows how to create a working bootable loopback install that allows you to add software???

--Thanks so much for your time and please take this into correct context that I'm not upset just bewildered as to how this is suppose to "just work"

I'm running xdsl0.7 beta on a loopback install and when I go to start it up, linux starts up fine, but the xserver can't start (I get a "Fatal IO error 104") and it puts me at the text cmd prompt.

This is my third install in a row, and I think this problem is only occurring once I've selected setup>xvesa while running the GUI.

Anyone know what this is about?

thanks
stevewal
Xvesa setup gui is not really set up to use with the xbox. Maybe I should take it off the menu. if you want to change xvesa resolutions then it is best done via cheatcodes which you can find information about in the xdsl wiki

ok I must be *lost* but how do I do a loopback install (no I'm not having an issue booting xdsl, I can ftp the code just fine to the xboxes) what I'm attempting is to make an xdsl that has three things (along with others once I get things working):

0.) use a 2gb loopback filesystem install (cause we like fatx, really)
1.) have the core 56mb of goodness that xdsl needs to boot - from inside my loopback install
2.) install flash9
3.) install openoffice 3 - this will complete this quest I'm on for my family to have pc's for homework stuff.

--oh and of course cups for printing the homework assignments.

---any help or pointers or heck a loopback writable iso that I can download with these to quicken the quest (its been almost a month since the boys got thire xbox's for xmas and I have yet to master this loopback install step, my boys do know the penguin though...)
