Rumor: Zune Phone Is Coming to CES 2009

After years of rumors and brusque denials, it appears the Zune phone is the real deal.

According to Trip Chowdhry, an analyst at Global Equities Research, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will announce a Zune-style mobile device during his keynote address at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, on January 7, 2009.

In an article in Barron's, Chowdhry claims that the company's new centerpiece will combine the best features of the Zune media player with the hardware design of Danger's mobile Sidekick, in addition to "motion enhancement features," like an accelerometer.

Basically, this means the device will come with a physical keyboard like HTC's G1 and will likely feature a larger screen to accommodate heavy multimedia elements. And since we're all here copying each other's mobile phone features, we'll be shocked if the Zune phone doesn't feature multitouch capabilities.

I hope it's not touch screen. The touch pad is perfect. I've tried both and I much prefer the touchpad. I always try to swipe my phones buttons to no avail. sad.gif

I wonder if it'll have hardware failures! Or loss of signal..

ive tried the sprint instinct, the verizon voyager, the HTC (google phone), ppc-6700. At the then of the day, they are sluggish and very unresponsive. NOTHING COMPARES TO THE IPHONE. Ive had it since Feb, and all the phones ive mentioned are just ripoffs to the IPhone. Now the Zune phone? Who knows. Maybe DRM issue might be a little less a pain. Maybe it will support multitouch? Not really sure yet. If the zune phone follows the same pattern as the phones ive mentioned, then it will be another bad attempt at trying to copy the iphone. Hopefully it will be more responsive then the Iphone competitors. The IPhone could use a real challenger. Well see.

I'm pretty sure it's going to use windows mobile...come on...its microsoft...they probably do something similiar to HTC with the touchflo3D on windows mobile phones......

I don't believe this story really, as far as I know the zune has been pretty much a flop. Why would they try to leverage off something that wasn't all that successful to begin with to try and set themselves up against their own customers (HP ipaq, all the HTC mobile devices, dopod, samsung, all of these run MS Windows Mobile which MS would be making a killing off). Doesn't sound like a good business plan to me. dry.gif

I have tried almost every other touch screen phone, and nothing comes close to the iPhone sitting in front of me!!
maybe M$ could come up with something original once and a while?

because they already have the software somewhat already..and the cell phone business is a very profitable business to be in....

how is the ppc-6700 a ripoff of the iphone when it came out nearly 2 years before the iphone?

also, i wouldnt call the google phone an iphone ripoff, as like the 6700 (and 6800) its simply based on what HTC has been doing for years

the new HTC touch-series phones (especially the touch diamond and touch pro) definitely have iphone-inspired designs, but i wouldnt call them rip-offs (if you call touchflo a ripoff of the iphone OS i would wonder how familiar you are with either system)

as for the instinct and voyager, yes, these are blatant attempts to create a "poor-mans man's iphone" so i would certainly call them ripoffs

sorry for the OT rant, but when people seem to think anything with a touchscreen is an iphone ripoff it kindof peeves me

as for the zune phone, if they are making one it will almost certainly be an iphone clone, which means you couldnt pay me to use it either biggrin.gif

I guess it depends on how you determine if it is a flop or not.

The Zune is a solid piece of hardware that exceeds an Ipod in so many ways, if that makes it a flop, then so be it.

I got a BB Storm. Im pretty happy with it.

while yes u are right about the ppc-6700 (i was dumb enough to spend 500 bucks on it), i didnt mean that phone was a ripoff (though i should have stated that), i was implying that it was sprints king at the time. It was a very popular touch screen at the time. Everyone had em. Too bad it never worked right. You would always have to align the stylus. It would freeze and what not. I was just comparing it to the IPhone. The HTC is nice dont get me wrong, but my boss has it and he said and i quote, "dude i love the google phone, but this still cant touch the iphone". The IPhone really took the touch screen to the next level like it or not. They made it so mainstream that now everyone has one. The Iphone is like no other. Why someone wouldnt like it I dont know. I mean it doesnt freeze, the multitouch is just outstanding, and tons of cool apps. Albeit mine is jailbroken, that makes it even more flexible. Just my opinion though. tongue.gif

I agree, the zune, while does have its issues, mainly with the DRM, the zune is an excellent mp3 player. The big advantage Id give it over the Ipod is the fact that it has an FM tuner. The HDD space is also a big plus. End of the day, Ipod or zune you really cant go wrong.

heh, my boss has the iphone and after playing with my 6800 he said he made the wrong choice

in fact everyone i know with the iphone (4 or 5 people) arent satisfied and all but one likes my phone better, lol

if you like the iphone thats great, but everyone i know bought it because its "cool" and found that the hype far outweighs the functionality
spinemangler
Well, I for one will be looking forward to it.

Probably because I objectively look at things like a normal person, and not some fanatic. I love how, even though the iPhone was not the first touch screen phone, every touch screen after it is "copying".

The Zune is not a "flop". I own both an iPod and a Zune, the Zune beats my ipod hands down. It sounds MUCH better, the interface is better (this is subjective, others may disagree), the menus are easier to navigate and its way more responsive. I keep my ipod in my desk at work where i rarely use it, while I keep my Zune with me all the time.

Competition is good. If MS comes out with a good phone, I will try it out for sure. Both people I know who own iPhones like them, but do have issues. The iPhone does freeze. As much as you say it doesn't, they both rarely get 4 or 5 days without some sort of lockup. Most people who own one, or know someone who owns one, know this is true.

Anyway, Microsoft has been in the phone game for a while, and know what they are doing. I would imagine the Zune Phone will be a quality piece of hardware. If it has a full keyboard ala the G1, with a touchscreen as well, that will be awesome. I will be anxiously awaiting the zPhone.

what functionality? like i said, you are the 1st person who says they dont care for the iphone. im 30 work for a sales team, and cell phones are everywhere. most either have iphones or are debating when to get one. Well end of the day, everyone has own opinion. 2 each his own. tongue.gif
