I got my first Kreon Drive today.
Model SH-D163A with Kreon v1.0
I have it installed on a Via6421 (my motherboard does not have SATA)

I have been using this computer to flash Benq / Samsung / Lite-on without a hitch.

To my disappointment the start button never ungreys.

I am running Windows XP SP3 (fresh installed only a week ago)

I am not running ANYDVD or Daemon Tools or anything that I suspected could conflict with this.

I also tried Schtrom360Xtract V3.4 and get the error "Can't get feature list from drive! It is a Kreon compatible drive, but don't seem to be flashed with the right firmware! Drive is used as a normal DVD-ROM!"
I just realized Schtrom360Xtract V4 is out. Tried it and got a new error "No valid alt PFI found!"

I have the VIA card installed in the device manager in SCSI and Raid controllers - VIA VT6421 RAID Controller.

I also have Port I/O installed for my firmware flashing purposes.

Here is a screenshot showing that my drive is detected as being a Kreon v1.0 and the damn greyed out start button.

BTW. I have my orignal Rock Band NTSC disk in the drive.



I don't think this matters but I don't have a DVD burner installed on this machine. Just an old Lite-on CD burner. I just wanted to try ripping a game then I was going to send it over my network to my other machine with a Pioneer 216 Burner and burn it with CloneCD.

I have done many searches and nothing I found has got me any closer to a resolution.

what version VIA drivers are you using (do you have installed)?



I would recommend you use the 520a release drivers... anything above that has always resulted in this same problem for me.

do not install the RAID Manager Utility... just install the driver.

the driver you list is the 540 version. when you install the 5.20a version it should change your info to:

I have never installed the RAID Manager Utility before as I knew it wasn't needed.

So after changing driver and rebooting i am still not getting a start button. Schtrom360Xtract is still not working either.

Have you done anything on your PC related to iXtreme 1.5 and the PortIO driver? It is required for Jungle Flasher or Maximus' Xtractor Reader (and I think even for CK3 tool extractor)... If so this might be causing some issues....



One more thing.. how did you install this version of XBC? Did you install version 2.5 of XBC then copy the executable and frog.dll from XBC 2.8 to the XBC directory?



Just trying to get a lay of the land if you will. Usually the 520a drivers do the trick, but other things can be interferring.

Yes, I am flashing ix1.5 and I do have the port I/O driver installed.

Up until getting my Kreon drive I had not installed any via drivers.
It always had shown up as a ! in the device manager. I remember reading somewhere that the flashing worked best with no via driver installed and just port i/o was needed so that’s how I have been using the via card up until now.

The only version of XBC I have ever used is Xbox_Backup_Creator_v2.8.0.275.zip

To install it all I did was extract it to a folder I made C:\XBC

I got 3 files readme.txt , FrogASPI.dll (0.29.4.10), and Xbox Backup Creator.exe

I open that folder and launch the .exe so I didn't run any installer or anything like that.

I have uninstalled port I/O and rebooted and that has not helped. I have tried both the SPTI and ASPI mode and that makes no diff.

Now that I have the Via driver installed I have not been able to erase a Lite-on drive. I just dumped the inquiry, identify and key with dvdkey32 no problem then I tried to use the command line Lite-on-erase and got status D0, turned drive off and back on and sent the erase command again and my computer just freezes for 30 seconds wakes for 2 seconds and freezes again. Thankfully this was just a spare drive I was playing with. So I tried to uninstall the via driver and reboot and now of course windows auto re-installs the damn via driver automatically and now I am really pissed.

I was wondering about that... uninstall the via drivers and reinstall the portIO driver. just cancel out of the via install and tell it not to ask you for it again... there is a checkbox in the install window to not remind you of it again.



now that I know you are using the portIO driver, I am not sure what to tell you to do. I know that some people were having trouble with it... maybe you will get some help from one of them soon. i have not been doing anything with the portIO drivers so far so I am not sure how to tell you to go from here.

Actually once you install the driver windows puts a copy in the system32 folder. Every time i rebooted it almost instantly reinstalls without any way for me to stop it. My solution was to uninstall the driver, then before rebooting i deleted it form the system32 and when i rebooted windows couldnt f*ck me anymore.

Now i am back to my happy ! error for the via and my lite-on-erase and flashing tools all work perfectly again.

I don't think it is a good idea to try and use the same via card for both the kreon and flashing tasks.

I have another sata card here with a silicon image chipset i am going to try for my kreon.
Now i gotta find its drivers, oh boy, long day.

Well i finally got it to work but not with the via6421.
I just installed a Silicon Image SiI3114 - PCI to 4 Port SATA150

I found the drivers from my first google search.

Ran XBC and walla - Start button enabled in seconds.

Made a dump of Rock Band. I was under the impression the dumping process took a long time but it was done in 12 minutes.

Burned it and it played perfectly.

Two things that i would like clarified now that i am up and running.

1) Should i in any way be concerned with the message on XBC "This is not a true 1 to 1 copy" (if it was a perfect copy we wouldn't need to flash our drives with xtreme)
2) I ran abgx360 and it gives conflicting information about the DMI. DMI looks Valid but it also says its unverified and worse it says Verification failed at the end.

So, is there anything i should be doing differntly ?

Congrats on getting it running... and sorry for not asking about the PortIO drivers up front. So many variables, it is difficult to remember them all. I am sure someone else has run into this issue with PortIO and XBC but I cannot find any solution for it with the VIA card/drivers....



As far as ABGX goes, the DMI not being verified is OK as long as you are making a back up of your own disk. All it means is that your specific DMI is not in the database file for online verification, and that is why the program failed it. Not a big deal as long as you are making a copy of your own disk and did not D/L an image from somewhere (piracy not tolerated here). Who knows what DMI information might be in an image from "the scene".... (again piracy not tolerated here).



What speed are you making your B/U with? If your disks are somewhat older, it is best to make the B/Us at slower speeds to ensure read accuracy (scratches)

After you had your issue, I wanted to see if I could install the PortIO drivers, and use the new JungleFlasher.043 beta, and then remove the drivers and get the VIA card working again with XBCreator. I was able to do it but it took some doing.



The portio install went great (and i even forgot to remove the via drivers), jungle flasher did quite well and got all the info I needed, performed all the tasks I asked it too. so that was really good. I checked to see if XBC would work with the PortIO drivers and no joy so now on to remove the PortIO drivers...



Removal of the PortIO device in device manager was pretty straight forward. Removal of the actual drivers by issuing the "portio32.exe remove" command from cmd.exe command prompt also seemed to work pretty well ( or so it seemed). I was asked to reboot and this is where things got funky. Upon reboot, XP seemed to really struggle to get to the login screen... and the issue was the Via card. Quick check in Device Mangler (manager) showed the VIA with a "!" and an error that the device was unable to start. I removed the device from DM and uninstalled the Via drivers as well. Reboot and XP put it back automatically with the same error... went thru this several times to no avail.



Finally, I used an old trick I used to use for 98 and ME (yes I used to work in PC Support a lifetime ago) of removing the device and drivers, then shutting down the PC and removing power. I removed the Via Card from the PC and did a repower, reboot. Shut down, reinserted the card, and powered back up, drivers were not automatically installed, I had to install them. Used the Via 520a drivers... and guess what. All was back like it was and XBC working just fine.



I repeated this process of uninstalling the PortIO drivers and removing the via card from the PC completely then reinstalling the Via drivers (after a reboot with the VIA card removed) and it worked every time.



Now I know it is a pain but that is what worked for me. Maybe someone else can benefit from this as well.

I have also tried what you suggested and windows still automatically reinstalled the drivers.
I found the driver file and deleted it and thats working but now everytime i start windows it asks me to install and find the driver. Of course i just cancel and everything is fine but i just want winodws to leave me alone.

I went into the registry and deleted all reference to the via driver but windows still somehow thinks it can install it and there is no way to bring back the checkbox "don't ask me to install this driver again"

I set-up an old slim seagate 10gb drive from a xbox 1 with windows and that's what i use now just for flashing hitachi drives as they don't flash correctly on my secondary Silicon Image sata card. I actually bricked a hitachi v46. (not a customers, just a spare) Thankfully i have a eprom programer and was able to lift the SST chip and restore it. Tried again using my via card and works great.

I am still really worried about the DMI being off. I should really spend the time and try dumping a game with a true xbox 360 samsung drive and see if the dmi generates a differnt value.

I already sold my kreon drive but i ordered 3 more from fleebay. All my customers seem to want them now.

I actually have a Kreon and a Sammy and I have tried what you mention. I got the exact same result on both backups. The only thing that seemed to be different was the "angles" the 2 drives generated. The Sammy seems to really be speed senstive and will throw off some pretty steep angles if I try to backup at 8x - 12x. The Kreon does not seem to care and pretty much gives similar angles no matter what the B/U speed. Both drives gave the same DMI unverified information in abgx..







did you have anything connected to the VIA card when you reinserted it and reinstalled the drivers? that is one thing I forgot to mention... I did not have anything connected to the card when I did the "reinstall".

Nope,

I uninstalled driver, removed card, rebooted with no via card, shut down installed via (nothing connected) when i reboot windows it wants the drivers and i just can't find a way to make it leave me alone.

Like i said its no biggy but i just hate that windows is so lame that it took the option "do not ask me to install again" away and is going to nag me everytime i reboot.
