I have heard people say they have gotten games to work on a DVD -R DL Disk. I have tried though and can't figure it out. I think they are just lying. Is there a way you can do it? Or do you have to have DVD +R DL?

Nope it's not possible.From what ive heard you cant change the booktype or layerbreak.And you need them both.
