iv decided its time to mod my 2006 xbox but i want to mod it with some 12V fans.

i have

2 5cm 12V fans
2 8cm 12V fans

a large number of odd sized heatsinks (wont fit on CPU/GPU) but can add somewhere if it helps.
a bunch of wires.
got pretty much all the tools i need
but don't have a soldering ion.

any ideas on what i can do?

and how many fans can i add (if i can) to the stock fans wires?

thanks
JBmtk
I would run them off of an external power source....a simple ac-dc transformer will probably do like a cell phone charger or some old RC car battery charger. Yes, you don't need to solder, but you can twist the wires together and then put electircal tape over them. If you want to run them off the xbox mobo, find a SAFE 12V line...(probably the PSU) and connect postive terminal to that and then obviously the ground goes to a screw on the motherboard or the ground on the psu wire.

Agreed with the person above. But really, nothing is going to be very permanent in connections without a soldering iron. Hope you have quite a few wire nuts or wire clamps.

Not true smile.gif go online and look for a molex power supply. It plugs into your wall, but the other end of it has a molex conector. Then to could either buy a fan with a molex connector and use a splitter so you can plug up more. If your fans have 3 pin connectors on them then to find a 3 pin fan connector to molex splitter.

a 12V AC adapter? good idea smile.gif got a ton of those.

will this work?

1> drill a hole near a USB port.
2> cut an end of the USB cable, plug it in.
3> thread the other end (previously cut) though the hole to the inside of the console.
4> wire fans to the USB cord.
5> now place fans in the desired spots you need.
6> put the case back together and done!

if you drill near the back next to the power supply or the USB plug.
you could use that port or use an 12V USB AC adapter and bunch the cord to the power cable with cable ties

what do you think?

I still think you should learn to solder.
xbox360-fixer-wannabe
You should solder it in. cool.gif

Just solder. It's a looooot less hassle and it's easy to learn how to do. You can buy a cheapo soldering iron for $5 at Wal-Mart and that would work fine for something like this, it's what I use.

Sorry I didnt explain further, i was on my iTouch.

Heres a link to the thing i was talking about. http://www.pctoys.com/840556029977.html

It has a molex connector on the end of it, and can support up to 2A. You may be able to find a better one than that, but thats what Im talking about. You could then just use molex splitters to plug in your fans (you may need a 3 pin fan adaptor).. No soldering required, good connections, and its not using power from the 360.

xcm makes a connector that will runn off the disc drive works can cause problems thoough but ive never run in to a problem with that

well i might consider soldering in a specific spot but getting the stuff is gonna be hard

soldering ion $30NZ
molex power supply $50NZ

LOL that sucks laugh.gif

well soldering is the cheapest option.
there is a spot i could do, its near the power button with a white square on the mobo next to the barcode.
you need to get a three prong part for that, but i know where to get them at least smile.gif

and LOL still got some lead base solder!
my old soldering ion is missing in my double garage but... (you cant park a car in it)hint laugh.gif

but till i can get a soldering ion, you think that USB idea will work as a temporary fix?

USB ports only supply 5v.

Where exactly is the 12V location underneath the PSU plug? Can someone provide a diagram of the mobos 12V location?

TIA

All the power sources you could ever dream about

nice post! alot of good power supply i see.

now i can definitely see why its better to solder.

gonna get that tool in a week or so.

well im gonna do that three prong part idea as it has versatility
and now im gonna solder stuff, any tip's for someone who hasn't soldered in 6 years?

and any simple not to hard points to wire 2 wire and 3 wire fans to the mobo?

thanks laugh.gif
assault911
oh yeah, this is the fan mod im considering
Hamwrath
Well, I am currently running 5 fans off the 4pin stock connector. (My setup) In my first tests I ran them off of usb and eventually went with all molex connectors to the 12v. No soldering required. The wires have become sort of a mess but it does work fine with no affect to gameplay.
assault911
one word... WOW!!! nice work! cool.gif

so the stock fan power supply has no probs? great! laugh.gif

I don't have the tools right now to measure amp draw on the line but they are connected in parallel and appear to work fine. I can clearly hear them running quietly when i first boot up and then speeding up the longer I've got a game going. I guess as long as they've got their own 12v rail then there's nothing to worry about since the fans draw pretty low amps, but I'd have to check the schematics to confirm that. I'm not sure why so many people (talismoon v1) are taking 12v from the dvd drive when the original fan power source is 12v.

Yeah i agree, its silly to solder in complex locations when its just a few wires away, but soldering can be better cause you can add more.

the stock fan was my first idea but i didn't want to interfere with something important, but i think i might go ahead with that idea.

i heard that using the DVD drive for power can cause complications later down the road, might be wrong

LOL my wiring skills are great but my soldering skills are crap! last soldered when i was 6 and now im 17 LOL laugh.gif
assault911
i decided to try and go ahead with the USB fan idea as well as some other ones.

the fan keeps a good speed and in a 2.0 port it goes even better, got some spear parts from some PC power supply laugh.gif

i don't recommend more than one fan though. i simply try'd it to see what amount of performance it can put out, and for simplicity, its rather good for beginners, me for one of them laugh.gif lol

LOL Thinking for the next summer is to by six or more 20mm or bigger fans and set them on a USB hub and plant them around my room LOL at 40c+ you cant blame me LOL laugh.gif

hi i see you want more fans and dont want to burn your fingers on the soldering iron smile.gif i also see the fan mod you are gonna go for, but in my experience that single fan will not make that much improvement... check my story ... http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=684487 as far as adding fans without soldering ... yeah no worries mine are cut in and taped up to the original rear fans and work like a dream. when tapeing wires heat and the right tape is a major factor as heat will cause tape glue to melt and loosen so be careful use correct tape ... AND U SHOULDNT COME UNSTUCK smile.gif
bereda
just use the xcm core cooler i have had one for a arround a year and have never had a problem with it if your worried about voltage spikes just wire a diode in to the xcm connector its very easy you can wire the diode with electrical tape
assault911
yeah one fan wont do crap hear in summer so... i got three! laugh.gif

1> one to put in that common spot by the power button.
..> any ideas on a cheap solution on creating a hole in the casing?

2> one small one to go one the GPU.

3> and another one to go one the top by the HDD
..> i took the fan guard tunnel thing off so it's just the fan, looks cool laugh.gif

and b4d5h0t. nice mod smile.gif any ideas on how many fans can be added to the Deathbox 360 stock fans?LOL

bereda. diode you say? never thought of that thanks laugh.gif
