Hi.

I have problems with burning X360 games. Sometimes it works, but most of the time it doesn't. I use ImgBurn 2.3.2.0 and have a SONY OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7170A.

I don't know if the problem is my burner or my pc. I assume it is the burner, but I'm not sure. Please help me with that, is the Sony Optiarc inappropriate???

In the case it is I'll have to buy another burner. Which one is the best for burning X360 games???

Which one is the best for making X360 backups??? Is there a burner that can do backups without flashing it with new firmware???

Thank You in advance.

Id get the pioneer 115D for burning. Pretty cheap around $30-35

There isnt a burner you can make backups with, but there are special DVD roms that can rip games called kreon drives that you flash with kreon firmware to rip your games.

There is only certain models that can rip games and not any dvd rom can be flashed to be a kreon drive.

SH-D162C and D162D IDE
SH-D163A and D163B SATA

So these are DVD roms not burners???

And they have to be flashed (opened), if no they can't burn x360 games???

they are just readers, not burners. there are simple windows based flash apps you use to flash them with the appropriate firmware to rip 360 games.. pretty simple process =)

I got my burner off of tiger-direct for $19 plus $7 shipping. I just looked on their site and it made me mad...they have it now for $14!! Oh well $5 isnt a big difference.

This is the TS-H353B which has the same internal parts as the SH-D163B but is a lot cheaper. it just has to be flashed with a "no check" ( all that is is when you use the utility, you just type in "-no check").

How to do the "no check":

After you downloaded the SH-D163B_SB01_KREON_V100.RAR file from xbins, you extract the contents into a folder. I would recomend extracting it to a folder right on the C:\ directory to make the next step easier(lets say u extracted it into a folder named "flash"). In windows XP, click the start menu then click "run" and type in "cmd". when the black box opens up type in "C:\flash\sfdnwin.exe -nocheck" exactly, without the parenthesis. it will run the flashing utility saying "-Nocheck Use!!". click OK and the program will start up. Choose your drive fron the dropdown list, open the hacked firmware in your "flash" directory by clicking on the blue folder button in the top left corner. After that has been done, click on the middle button in the top left corner and it should flash the drive for you. I would recommend not having anything inside that drive while flashing(no cds, dvds...etc).

Here is the link to the drive: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/se...srkey=TC3H-1152

Tonight i just flashed my xbox drive so I haven't gotten to see if the drive works but in a previous post i made, people said they got the drive, flashed it, and it worked perfectly...which is why i got it to try.

Good luck!

well it doesnt sound like his problem is with ripping games so much as it is burning them... so a kreon drive isn't what your looking for. if you say it works sometimes and not others, id say your problem lies with your media? what kind of dvd+r DL are u using?

for making backups though. you can either use a kreon, or, once 1.6 comes out, using the 0800 firmware for any of the drives so they can be seen in windows

Yes, my problem is with burning games. I only asked about ripping because I wanted to know if there is a burner who can make backups, I see there is not.

Verbatim DVD+R DL. I'm burning them with ImgBurn. I'm updating the firmware of my burner, but I don't think this will resolve the problem.

After doing MUCH more reading, I am now just looking for confirmation. I have the following drives:

Desktop: SONY CD-RW CRX300E KYS1
Laptop: TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633L 0400
External: TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S182M SB05

The problem I am having right now is that none of these drives can read a 360 game (using XBC or Schtrom) in order to rip it to my HD. I haven't flashed any of them with Kreon FW. I am now under the impression that none of these drives can be flashed. Somewhere I read that with the new iXtreme update that's going to be released, I won't have to worry about what drive I'm using to read the game. All I need to know now, is that if it is necessary to buy a new DVD drive. I guess any of these drives will work to burn, I just need something new read the game.

BTW, sorry if this is off topic of this particular thread, but doing a search, this one seemed quite relevant to my question.

Good, none of them are compatible with Kreon. Read the PINNED Topics in this Forum:

Two more questions:

1) Will the new iX update solve my problem so that I don't have to purchase a new drive?

2) Is there an alternative route that I can use aside from purchasing a new drive?

Thanks for the help :-)

iamwithstupid.gif Exactly. look in that pinned post for the drives needed.

I actually posted the link to one that works, and the instructions on how to flash it correctly earlier in the post

Yeah, I see, but I need a burner not a backup maker ohmy.gif
maybe a Pioneer would be the best choice? Which model to buy?

Um... most modern DVD+R DL burners will work. People use all different kinds. I like Pioneer products but use an NEC. Some use Samsung others use Lite-on. Find out what media you would like to pay for and figure out if people have success burning that media with the drives you like.

If you would like someone to make up your mind for you then let us know. I will gladly go to newegg.com, open the page with 30 some DL burners they offer, close my eyes, and randomly click on the screen. When I click one burner, I will tell you what it is so you can buy it. Or you could do your own research and not rely on others to do your thinking for you.

I could tell you I use a NEC 3520a or something like that, but that would do you no good because I think they are discontinued. I did my own research and based on reviews I picked this burner. It wouldn't write some Memorex CD-RW but, other than that, it has been flawless.

Samsungdrives.com is having a sale this month on preflashed kreon drives, if you need one that would be the way to go, as far as the burning, I would go with the pioneer everyone is talking about here but just so you know all you need is a dual layer dvd durner (ussually anything that does lightscribe can do dual layer but I could be wrong) and image burn software set up with the proper DL break (you should be able to find this from the .dvd file when you open it with notepad it should say Layerbreak=?????? enter that number under the write settings tab at the dual layer break section) I think this should help you out, if not post again and maybe we can help you from there

Here's a Kreon SH-D163B on ebay for $45 shipped to your door:

I just want to confirm that YES THIS DRIVE WORKS TO READ/BACKUP GAMES. I purchased and flashed the drive just as Silentblackhat recommended and it worked like a charm. Thanks!
Don't waste an additional $40+ on a "preflashed kreon drive"!

Side Note - For a short time, TigerDirect was OOS on these drives, but got them back in about a week later. And if you have never dealt with them, they're a VERY reputable vendor with fast shipping. Yet another reason not to buy from some possibly shady UK/EU/Ebay/etc website.

No, what the iXtreme 1.6 0800 firmware allows you to do is use your 360's dvd drive to rip games to your computer. It's very useful if you have a spare xbox dvd drive lying around. You can then use it as a kreon drive. If you want to use your 360's dvd drive to rip games, then no you dont need to get a new dvd drive. However, if you dont want to go that route then you will need to buy a Kreon drive to do the ripping.
