I don't want information on doing this or links to information or any kind of anything thats against the rules, my friend and I were arguing the fact and I would like to know once and for all, can you copy backup's to a HD and play them from there like on an xbox 1?

If it's possible to copy orignals to HDD with NXE, and play them, then do the math. 
You do need to have the disc in drive for validation, so technically it's not like xbox 1
