Hey guys (especially my man Gilles),

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in creating generic artwork for all of the systems we're making artwork packs for. I was thinking somewhere along the lines of Generic Boxarts and Carts that could have displayed on them somewhere phrases like "Prototype", "Pirate", "No Boxart Available".

Now that this Enhanced Artwork thing has come along, it would be great to have something dipslay for every rom, even if we can't find the boxart/cart or there wasn't one available as in the case of many prototypes or pirate carts.

I was thinking about starting with NES, Atari 2600 and SNES.

What do you think?
~Rx
madmab
hehe... You must have been reading my mind...

Also at some point we are gonna have to discuss differences between box sizes (USA/EU vs JP) and in some cases cart art and boxes. Example for cart-art vs boxes would be the SMS, although the carts are not exactly anything to look at. laugh.gif

I'm thinking lazy here... So I figured let the skin definition have four size/locations for this stuff?

1 and 2 would be for Box art definitions.
3 and 4 would be for Cartridge art definitions.

The skin author could define how each size definition works.

Use Boxart size/location 1 when (width>height, width=height, width<height)
Use Boxart size/location 2 when (width>height, width=height, width<height)
Use Cartart Size/location 1 when (width>height, width=height, width<height)
Use Cartart Size/location 1 when (width>height, width=height, width<height)

So what do you all think? Gilles?
ultimate509
Yeah good Idea, funny I had something similar on my rig but havnt applied it yet so I dont know if it looks good on the Tv,
IPB Image

Wouldnt mind seeing what Gilles could do..
ressurectionx
We're not talking 2 new directories, right? It would be two different ratio definitions for each directory (boxart/cartart)?

If that's the case I think it's a GREAT idea.
madmab
Yeah it would just be one directory and the skin author can create two locations to display the cartridge art and specify where to put it based on whether the width is greater than the height, etc. Kinda like a customizable option.

Right now the cart location/size is shared with the boxart location/size..

I do like that image, but I was thinking for each system to have something stylized to look like the standard boxarts for each system. I know with NES there may not exactly have been a standard, but if you look at SNES boxarts or Master System boxarts it's really easy to see what I mean. (I figure for NES, it would be cool to use the Super Mario I, Duck Hunt, Hogan's Alley black boxarts)

I've changed my mind on the carts though. Even on systems I wasn't able to collect much boxart on, it looks good having the Action/Title alternate with just the box displaying. I think it would look pretty stupid to alternate to a "no Cart Available" image when you could just have the Boxart up there the whole time. I know I wouldn't like that.

Sounds great Madmab. I was actually going to bring that up to you at some point but I figured you had enough on your plate now. Glad to see you don't think it should be too hard to implement.

Yo my pals, i'm on a 3 days trip in great britain (in france we call the british guys the "rosbeefs"). So i answer shortly;
In all the dynamic skins i have created a "missing boxart" sprite for each system, and for each system, if you don't have any boxart, the skin will display the "missing boxart" (if you are using a pre made config with "boxart" in its name), the missing boxart is always a sort of "neutral" boxart, i was aware of this problem before making the skins.

p.s.: the good news in all of this is i have finished the work on the nes synopsis! Now i can go back with my first love, the skin creation! I m working on the next series of dynamic skins (i know there is a lot to do to complete the pm3 ones!). What is cool is the "rombrowser", "boxart" and "screenshot/movie" squares are transparents! (.png pics), so the users will be able to set them where they want, plus they will be able to choose themself wichever 640*480 background they want (in this case i chose a metroid background).
We will be able to bring some really cool stuff with the new dynamic skins system.
Example of my future metrid dynamic skin for snes9xbox (rombrowser square on the left, screenshot/movie on the upper right, boxart on the bottom right; boxart and screenshot are at the correct pixel ratio)

Sweet looking skin man. Castlevania and Metroid always make for the best game skins in my opinion.

Unfortunately, the boxarts in the skins won't work for us Gilles. In order to use them, you have to have Boxes and carts that are identical in size all across the board. If by chance the artwork isn't all the same (and by certainty when madmab makes the 2 ratios per boxart/cartart for japan games and carts that don't match the boxart size), then when the box isn't completely covered by the artwork you will see the edges of the images you've created behind the artwork.

Anyways.... I'm going to see if I can come up with a crappy rendition of what I'm talking about. Think it would be cool to have images for each category such as prototypes, hacks, etc. using a Boxart type theme for each system.

Anyways.... this is kinda along the lines of what I was thinking. I suck at this stuff, so the end result would look a lot better.

This was originally just an email to Gilles, but I want to keep it here so this stuff is transparent. I'd like to see what ideas if any the community comes up with.....

Hey Gilles,

You ever think about what I posted in the thread for the missing Boxart project?

I'm really thinking we need something like this for all of the systems because there are certain categories that just don't have any boxart and a very small amount of licensed games that there just is no boxart for.

I was thinking having boxart that is generic as possible, with the style of the system's boxart like this:

IPB Image

I think it would be even better if we removed the Mario picture and just had a white border with a black background with the words inside of it.

I was thinking that we need boxarts that say the following for most systems:

"Prototype"
"Unlicensed"
"Original Homebrew"
"No Boxart Available"

We wouldn't need one for "Hacks" because I've been using the original game's boxart for all hacks.

I would then add the appropriate image to every game in the Xtras so we never have a blank space while scrolling through our roms. I would then update the Boxart packs one final time with these new images.

We really need something like this because it will greatly improve the look of the Xtras sets. I know you made those images in the skins, but with the different sizes of the images, we'll see that background on the edges of images that don't take up the entire box (example: The Japan SNES boxart).

Thanks man. I hope you agree and come up with something great like you always do.

FROM GILLES: Ah! ok resX! i just didn't understand immediatly!
ok, good idea, it's clear now, it will be boxart for the homebrew/prototypes, etc... for the Xtras!
I think a size of 400 pixels height or widht max would be great for them.
I will work with photoshop to provides some good ones for all the systems.
Excellent idea and totally agree now, some pearls need "at least" a blank boxart!

Great to hear you're on board man!

Very important thing, I think.

Right now, I am looking for the following systems since the artwork is either done or very near completion:

NES
Atari 2600
SNES
Atari 7800
Lynx
Genesis
Atari 5200/800

Prolly in that order would be best too.

Thanks a ton and hope to see your work soon.

ressurectionx
Damn dude.... you're a genius!

That's better than anything I was even considering.

Could you make one for "No Boxart Available" as well since occasionally for these systems there is actually some licensed games that no boxart can be found for? That would probably be the least used one, but there would be a use for it on rare occasion.

Now I have a dilemma....

It's always been my policy to use the original title's boxarts for rom-hacks. Every Xtras release has this. Now I'm wondering if I should keep them the way I have them or use your rom hack image.

I'm thinking that when you make the SNES and Atari 2600 ones that you could use the exact same images for the different categories and just drop them into SNES style boxes and 2600 style boxes. You could actually do that for every system, but those are the next two we'll need.

Great work man,

Maybe you Should edit the box art like put on it

Rom Hack
-name-
dont
know were because there all diff but thats a big job

gilles9999
It would be a crazy job to create one different boxart for each of the 3000 hacks for the differents systems and in that case i would certainly finish my life in an psychiatric hospital!
That's why i create those "generic" boxarts,
what would be your favorite for "rom hack"? 1,2 or 3?
Let me know 'cause i will have to create some for the other systems
(i think a wizard is appropriate, because after all, the rom hackers are some great wizards eh!)

2 or 3

either one looks good

one question why wizards? just wondering
ressurectionx
Ha.... I actually like (1) the best myself cool.gif

I think the wizards are good for the hacks too. Takes a little bit of coding wizardry to get that done.

I'm still unsure that I will use a generic hack boxart in my packs though Gilles. Currently I use the original rom boxart for all the hacks and I think it looks quite good (Granted it may be a little confusing for people if they just have all of their roms thrown in one folder instead of separating them into categories like me).

I think this would only be used on the rare instance of a hack of a pirate/prototype like the hack I have in the NES set for Kart Fighter.

Still haven't made up my mind on that.

I knew there was no way you were going to do one boxart for each game. You haven't been around a while so I figured you could just say how crazy that would make you when you got back.

If you had the time I'd LOVE to see the SNES versions soon. I plan on doing a huge overhaul on that artwork pack and it would be nice to get these in there on the first try.

GREAT WORK!!!!

gilles9999
In fact i use myself the boxart of the original game for the hacks;
So i guess, you could just put one "hack.png" pic in your nes artwork if some guys want a specific artwork for them

Yeah i'm actually on hollidays, funny is when i see the guys playing beach volley here, i think about super spike v ball (shit men, i become a geek again! tongue.gif )

p.s.: the missing generic snes artwork is on my top priority for you rsX. (the nomad pc is here with photoshop)
Mega Man (?)
hmm, I like number (1) because it feels like it would be in place with other nes art work.

Hey Gilles you could always use your box that you made and impose a screen shot of each hack, for every single one. biggrin.gif tongue.gif laugh.gif
It would be cool...

gilles9999
sure, i will take a photo of my ass and put it in eackh boxart!
No seriously i prefer nbr (1) too, better feeling about this one, it looks like a true nes boxart.

ressurectionx
Sweet!

We'll need Genesis at some point too..... going back and re-doing all that stuff won't happen until I get cracking on editing the Genesis synopsis though, and I think I'm taking a big break from that stuff after I get NES done!

Nice work there too MM?

Any chance we could get the 2600 stuff too wink.gif

Great work Gilles.

show must go on, i just try to keep the "original" atari 2600 feeling, it s the same construction used with the "ms. pacman","centipede" or "phoenix" boxarts (but madmab you know it well for sure)

I bet they do man. I can't wait to get them integrated in the official sets.

I'm sooooo behind on that and other things people have been sending me. I still have nearly 100 new SNES videos from Stupot1 as well as the remaining NES videos. Plus I've got PSX videos from Nate and pCe to get in there, and 30 new GBC videos from our newest helper bc54. Then I have to upgrade the artwork packs to the HQ boxart for NES and SNES and then somehow I have to figure out the best way to convert the finalized SNES set to work with ZSNESXBox too. (run made the XPORT pack from my ZSNES pack originally. I never thought I'd actually be going back and re-doing that).

So... Now that I should be wrapping up the NES synopsis some time tonight I hope to complete the NES artwork pack using your badass images here.

Only one thing we forgot......... A basic "No image available" or "No Boxart Available" or somthing like that. Every once in a while we get a straight up official game that nobody can find the boxart for. Maybe not much on NES or SNES, but I'm willing to bet there are a few on Genesis and more than a few on the Atari systems, especially 2600.

Any ideas for that image?

BTW... where did you get the image for that guy on the prototypes. It's priceless. And it's perfect for this project.

Yeah that's the silver international box. There are the early box types (think Adventure wink.gif ) and the even older black boxes. But the silver ones were used during the latter half of the 2600's life, including on re-issues..

Oh.... along with the "No Boxart Available" box, or whatever we're calling it, I have a special request for just the NES. I have a category called "Pirate Fighters". This is for all of the Mortal Kombat and Tekken type pirates out there. There are probably 30 or more of these.

Got any pictures of Pirates kicking each others faces in? cool.gif

EDIT: Oh crap... we'll need an "Unlicensed" category too. A lot of unlicensed games, especially US ones have boxart, but there are quite a few that don't. Should we just use the above "No Boxart Available" for them? Probalby...

EDIT 2:

IPB Image

How's that for the "No Boxart Found" image? cool.gif
gilles9999
this pic will be fine! Here are for my pal resX for finishing your cart art pack

the hardest part is to find adequate pics for those generic categories!

(1) pirate fighter

(2) the no boxart available

(3) now i have 2 choices for the unlicensed games, what is your favorite? (make a good choice, cause the pic will be used for the other systems

Pirates is perfect, The Screamer was definitely a great choice. I love both of the images, but I think the squad car would be the way to go. I'd laugh everytime I saw that picture, but I'm trying to keep everything relatively PG (taking great percautions to put adult games in a separate category.... mostly FDS Japan Pr0n and foul mouthed romhacks).

Great work man. This is exactly what the packs needed.

Thanks,

Wow man they look awesome. Well done.

Oh yeah.... just in case you forgot, the Pirate Fighter pic doesn't need to be done on the other systems. That was an NES exclusive category. cool.gif

Yo guys!
i realized we didn't have any HQ boxarts for all the snes "bs games" like "bs f zero", "bs zelda", bs"zelda ancient stone tablets", "bs fire emblem", "bs radical dreamers", there is lot of bs games in fact smile.gif .
and a HQ boxart i made for "the humans" for the snes, you were right resX, IMPOSSIBLE to find the official boxart for this game, damn!

IPB Image

IPB Image
with this homemade boxart, at least you will see what a bs system look like in your rombrowser happy.gif

p.s.: i have big computer problems since 1 week grr.gif , it is slowly dying (too old, too buggy...); i hope to buy a new one in a week or 2
Mega Man (?)

yup does suck to have comp probs specially someone like you whos a big factor in the emulation game, good idea with the Bs box fronts, and later on when you get your computer up and running better can you make a turbo Grafx rom hack box front...thanks in advance..
ressurectionx
Great additions there bud cool.gif

I also couldn't find boxart for these so far either:

Manchester United Championship Soccer
Waterworld

As far as I know, they're both official releases too... (Dont' know if you want to do artwork for those games or the "No Boxart Available".

That should probably be the last of them though since I've gone through all the official releases.

Great idea with the BS artwork too. I just noticed that going through them last night and I've actually been using the image you put in that pic as 0004.png for all these games. Now I can delete those and use your boxart. Just have to figure out which ones need it again.

Later,
~Rx

EDIT: Damn... we need the Unlicensed SNES box for one game.... "Gamars Puzzle". I can't find a cart of that anywhere.
gilles9999
Yeah it really sucks to have computers problems.. muhaha.gif
only because i love the snes, homemade "manchester championship soccer"

IPB Image

p.s.: really sorry for the low bandwidth users!
resX, so, we have boxarts for ALL the snes games now? with all the generic boxarts to complete the set?
ressurectionx
Great work man! And quick too cool.gif

Yep... I believe that's everything I need to make a complete set now.

I'm not off to the races on getting any new releases out yet but I'll just say that I'm VERY close to having the NES, SNES and Genesis fully up to code with perfect artwork sets and synopsis' (all the HD stuff we could find replacing low res or nasty looking boxes, your generic boxarts for every game that I couldn't find either a boxart or a cart for). Of course, there is a video for every game as well (except for a few requests and any new games that come in).

I'm holding off on any releases for the moment because Stupot1 and I keep finding just a few more to add all the time. I'm definitely getting them prepped for a final release though.

Thanks for the great artwork Gilles, and thanks for all the vids and new games for the project Stupot1. Hopefully there aren't as many games to add to SNES and Genesis as there were for the NES. I don't think there will be though since the pirate and hack scene wasn't as crazy for either of those systems.

Thanks guys,
~Rx

EDIT:
QUOTE
for the unlicensed games (not many i think, steven seagal?)

Nah... That's a prototype game. There's only two Unlicensed games that I'm even aware of that don't fall into the "Pirate" category. They're Noah's Ark 3D which we already have boxart for and then some unique little puzzle game from Japan called "Gamars Puzzle" that I couldn't find any boxart for.

Two things I factor in when deciding if a game is truly unlicensed or a pirate:

1) If it was made in US or Japan, 99.99% of the time it is Unlicensed. Places like Taiwan, Brazil and China tend to have pirates.

2) Pirates are usually hacks of games to remove copyright stuff or change characters in a previously licensed game. Unlicensed games are generally original games which were just released without Nintendo's/SEGA's licensing.

So.... Had only one working game that uses your Pirate pic - "Sonic The Hedgehog"

There were about 6 or 7 more pirates that didn't work, including "Tekken II" and "Picachu"

Had only one game that uses your Unlicensed pic - "Gamars Puzzle"

Had about 30-50 use your Prototype box

Had 2 use your Homebrew box.

And.... we don't need the "No Boxart Available" since you already created your own boxarts for the 3 licnesed games that I couldn't find boxart for.

That's hard to decide there man. Really like the cartoony one myself. Until I noticed it was a cop though I was thinking somebody might freak about some racial stuff or something cool.gif

It will be a while before I can get back to this stuff and get the Genesis stuff done, but I can't wait to see these in the set on my Box.

Hopefully this winter we'll get the complete boxart sets for all the emus that have Xtras.
