If I want to make backups do I still need to flash my XBOX360 DVD Drive?

If I still need to flash the drive why does the XBOX360 realise the difference between a backed up Disc and an original ( of course my original and backup disc is legit )?

Finally, how come no one has figured out a way of simplifying backing up a disc from Original > Image > Backup etc as the format has been out for a while now and people seem to have loads of different problems backing up..
