Free60 JTAG/SMC XeLL Hack for Jasper-16mb Motherboards
Posted by XanTium | November 8 19:45 EST | News Category: Xbox360

After the release of the hack for Xenon, Falcon/Opus and Zephyr motherboards, today we get the Free60 JTAG/SMC XeLL Hack for Jasper (v4) motherboards with 16mb NAND chips (so NOT compatible with 256 & 512mb NAND yet)! This NAND image will boot your Jasper Xbox360 right into XeLL, which allows you to launch linux distros or run libxenon homebrew software, as long as you never upgraded it via the normal MS upgrade procedures to kernel 849x or higher.
From the readme/nfo:
Finally the Jasper JTAG Hack is here :) This is XELL (compiled 11.09.09) inserted into 6712 Jasper-Kernel.
Don't wonder about the Filesize, its correct like that. It just flashes the beginning of the NAND so your console specific data like MAC adress will stay.
Of course you should have a working backup of your NAND before you proceed.
*** NOTE *** Only work with 16mb version, a fix may come out.
So does this work even with the most recent update? Or like the other hacks was the door closed after the August update?

same, if you upgraded via the normal upgrade procedure to 849x or higher, you can not peform the JTAG hack.

If i was to get a console with the required kernal/update, would i be able to dual boot dashboard?
I think i heard that somewhere.
So i could essentially have 2 consoles in one... so one dashboard for offline + back-ups & the latest dashboard for Live + originals.
Anyone know if this is possible?

All non-arcade units are 16mb. The RE5 is an 'Elite' special edition, so its 16mb.

I have a few elites that have not even been switched on, i know they have the older dash on them and they are jaspers, however i thought they all had 512 or 256 mb and that extra storage had just been disabled as was not required because it was not a arcade and came with a hard drive. so in short can you confirm for me that these elites will be the 16mb mother boards?
Oh i see this was just answered thanks
PS this is great news, so happy been waiting for this for a while now. thanks to everyone involved.

Sounds cool but is this kinda thing still in the very first stages? Are there any worthwhile homebrew apps yet? I hope having a 4th way to play SNES, Genesis, N64 roms isnt the point of this...
So jtag hack...linux...how powerful can a system be with 512 mb ram? What is possible.. I guess the Xbox did some impressive things with its whopping 64mb of ram and 733 mhz processor.
Sorry if I sound noobish.. I understand that this opens the door for great things but what is available now thats worth having?

I accidentally updated an exploitable 360 by using my hard drive that I use on my live box.
So pissed.

Edit: On a side note, its a shame that the Xbox live bans are more important then the progress of homebrew on the 360. I just got let go recently so I haven't had a chance to pick up an exploitable box. I will in the future though for sure. Thanks alot, this is great progress.

It looks like right now you can run:
Linux
Snes
GenesisVideo Player AlphaThere might be more but those are what I have seen. The thing about this hack is once you update you are screwed, so you need to decide whether you want homebrew and are willing to wait or just not have homebrew.
Note - I am pretty sure those links are ok but if they aren't just let me know and I will take them down.

great..
but by the time homebrew will have time to become big.. there'll be little to no exploitable 360's left, coz people are playing 4th wave games... and any 360 made in July 2009 has the 2nd bootloader on it
Ofcourse it's fun and great for the guys who lost their dvdkey to retrieve it
or the sunday afternoon linux programming club
but for the end user it won't be interesting for a long time
I have heard about unsigned XEX being able to run on homebrew 360's , and being able to play 360 games from USB HDD... then again this is not yet public, or might never become public.

True, right now there's really not much of anything. I've installed Ubuntu 7.10 and it works, but it's a bit sluggish and has no sound (though I could try xlokix' driver) or gfx driver. SNES emulation works except for the screen tearing, lack of saving and lack of menu. Genesis emulation suffers from poor sound, and even poorer controls (not to mention lack of support for scd/32x and roms must be in either zip or bin format). SMSPlus loads many roms with horrible colors, etc, so I haven't really played it to see what's up with it.
That being said, the real way to get more out of the 360 homebrew scene is to get involved in it and find some way to contribute, or organize a team that can do things.

While WPA2 Live update said "Note: As always, update at own risk and don't do it if u still wanna run the JTAG Hack."

XBMC is a massive project that has consumed tens of thousands of hours that could be enjoyed by anyone with a modded Xbox.
I'm guessing that even with all 4 hardware variants being supported, the number of Xbox 360's that are able to run homebrew is incredibly low.
I just don't see the time commitment being put into such a small audience. Porting emulators on the other hand is a quick win.
when homebrew becomes mainstream, thats when we are goingto start seeing better apps, including (hopefully) XBMC.

QUOTE(Pedroshin @ Nov 9 2009, 12:09 PM)

This has been floating around for nearly a year (atleast as far back as Jan'09 on teamxbox, which is the earliest reference to this I could find).
Anywho, the problem with this is that it's not going to do what people think it will.
#1: Many system updates trigger eFuses to prevent downgrading. How does this get around that? I know eFuses can be reset, but I doubt MS was dumb enough to embed the necessary JTAG code into the console to allow for that. If they were, it's a shame no one has discovered it yet, because that would solve a whole lot of problems for people.
#2: It could only possibly remove minor updates not major ones, and not on all consoles.
2a: If we assume system updates are simply add-ons to a base core, then it would seem only older xboxen with the smaller NAND's that required HDD/MemCard to store the rest of the system could do this and only back as far as the existing base core that is currently installed on the NAND. Newer systems like the Jaspers with the larger NAND's that store the whole system there I don't see as being able to do this at all.
2b: If we assume system updates are complete (as in actually patching the base core code itself), then the ability to remove said updates would mean that the system is creating backups of previous system versions. Again, this limits it to consoles with HDD's/MemCards since the NAND doesn't have the storage to hold any such backups and would still be subject to the eFuse limitations created by #1.
In other words, this is not going to revert your console back to pre August 09 if you already updated. Seriously, since this is old news, one would think the freeBoot and JTAG Hack guys (and all the other hackers) would have mentioned this as an option for people who already installed the August 09 update if this worked and did anything useful.

I wanted to hold out, but I was in the middle of a couple of games I wanted to play, and couldn't wait. Fortunately, I found one brand new Jasper Arcade unit at a Meijer store with a Feb 2009 manufacture date (I assume it's still safe) and bought another on Ebay for $95 which includes 2 Wireless controllers and a game, and had never been on Live.
I second the earlier comment about the shame of their being more attention on the bans than this. I've not modded my units at all yet, and don't plan to in order to pirate games.

i just bought a used jan 09 console today that i had planned on using for live as a backup incase anything happens to my current console. i havent logged that one into live yet today, but last night i was still playing on live w/ no issues.
i booted the console i got today up and saw that it was still on the 7371 dashboard, so now im torn on what to do. it is a jasper arcade unit. i dont believe that the console has ever been connected to live either. my original intention was to use it on live, but seeing as it has the pre summer 09 dash, im thinking its going to sit on a shelf while i follow up on what is happening with xell and jtag. i think im going to have to go and look for another console now to use as a backup lol

I'm starting to get really confused on what type of Jasper I have.
I bought a brand new arcade 360 from walmart, (no HDD, just a controler, and some game I can't remember off the top of my head) 2 days after the first reports of the jtag hack to enable homebrew back in August.
First off, I know for a fact that my 360 is a Jasper. I know this from doing the power voltage check near the barcode on the back of the 360. My numbers matched what was described as to having a Jasper.
Now, as for telling if I have 16mb, 256mb, or 512mb, I have no clue.
And here's another confusing part. I read online that the Jasper has an internal MU (memory unit). I read that you have to goto Settings, and Memory, and it should show up. So, with no HDD, and no external memory card inserted, I went into Settings, and Memory, and nothing was there. There was no icon of the 360 machine, with any description or anyhting. The screen was just blank......
So, do I have a 16mb, 256mb, or 512mb??
Thanks for the help.

WRONG! Updating to the 8x dash will also change the bootloader code to one that doesn't have a vulnerability (at least, that we know of).
