Ok So i had the open tray error with my xbox and i got a new laser for my drive.

I have replaced the laser on my drive.

Now some games load up get to a part where i can play and then pop up with the unreadable disc error now.

Basically before it would not load at all and just said open tray. Now it recognizes they are games but cant play them properly.

Any ideas what might be wrong with my drive?

Its a samsung with ixtreme 1.4 i think.

Maybe you have to tweak the laser pot a bit to strengthen the laser beam. Look for moda's tutorial on how to do it.

First things first it may well be the laser needs tweaking but the Samsung had a couple of other faults, one being the laser travels to far along its rail causing DRE's. Its a simple fix and I would do this before I touch the laser. Believe it or not its called the rubber band fix and ive fixed numerous with this method. You can search the internet for instructions or PM me with your private email and I will send you a pic. Doug

Just one thing to note is that the drive worked fine for 11 months and then started the open tray prob. Now new laser has fixed that and left the unplayable dirty disc error.

Would you still thing the rubber band fix is whats needed seeing as the drive worked fine for 11 months?

UPDATE:

Just stuck in an original DVD ( Movie) and plays no problems. Doesnt give any unreadable disc error at all.

I'm having a VERY similar problem.

I can play a DVD no problem in this machine, however, anytime I try to put in an original pressed copy of a game, I get the 'please insert the disc into an xbox 360' error.

I have tried using the exact same model drive (hitachi 47) with no luck. I'll be following this post to see what comes of it.

Did you inject your DVD drive key to the other drive before you try it? If nto you will get that message for sure. If you are sure you have the right dvd key on your drive for your console then a dvd laser replacement (or whole drive) is the solution to your problems.
whyexactly
^ agreed, the key has to be correct or it won't play games.

I'm getting the same problem on a Samsung now, it knows what the disc is and gets through all the intro stuff and then tells me the disc is dirty. I've been turning down the laser pot but I don't think that's it, I'm down to 3k now and don't want to go lower.

Dirty error like this, needs a laser replacement. Soon or later it will be total loss if you don't change it.

did you make sure you have the updated xbox dashboard, or is it with all your games???

Yeah it appears the wrong key is on the drive.

I am fixing the console for a friend of a friend's. He sent it to me, and I believe what happened was he had all his consoles out and apart and just swapped a couple of the drives incorrectly.

Not sure what my other options are then. I need to get the original key for this system somehow?
