Xbox LIVE being discontinued for Original Xbox consoles and games
Posted by XanTium | February 5 13:48 EST | News Category: Xbox

From the MS press release:
[QUOTE]
On April 15 we will discontinue the Xbox LIVE service for original Xbox consoles and games, including Xbox v1 games playable on Xbox 360 and Xbox Originals. I want to start by saying this isn't a decision we made lightly, but after careful consideration, it is clear this will provide the greatest benefit to the Xbox LIVE community.

Seven years ago we laid out our vision for the connected console when we launched Xbox LIVE. We believed then that the power of the Internet to connect people would revolutionize living room entertainment. It started with amazing multiplayer games, and we've since seen that bet pay off again and again with the launches of Xbox 360, Marketplace, Netflix and powerful social features like Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm. None of this would have been possible without the success of LIVE as a multiplayer gaming network.

There's no greater example of the power of the Xbox LIVE community than the "Halo" franchise. "Halo 2" has had an amazing run on LIVE, with a dedicated community more than five years after launch and well into the next generation of consoles. It has fundamentally changed the way we play video games. And while it's difficult to see that run come to an end, the "Halo" franchise continues to act as the benchmark for multiplayer gaming in this generation, with "Halo 3," "Halo 3: ODST" and soon "Halo: Reach" on Xbox 360.

Your Xbox LIVE community has grown to 23 million strong. And as we look down the road, we'll continue to evolve the service with features and experiences that harness the full power of Xbox 360. To reach our aspiration, we need to make changes to the service that are incompatible with our original Xbox v1 games. We will contact the Xbox LIVE members directly impacted by this change and if this includes you, I encourage you to check your LIVE messages and associated e-mail account over the coming weeks for more details and opportunities. We view you as a partner in this process.

We'll share more details soon, but in the meantime I want to assure you that the best is yet to come for Xbox LIVE. I believe we'll look back on 2010 as a landmark year in gaming and home entertainment, and I couldn't be more excited about what we have in store with "Project Natal" and LIVE. The LIVE community is the driving force behind everything we do, and it's because of the community that ground-breaking experiences on Xbox continue to be possible.

Wow!... i didn't even realise people still played the original Xbox online.. guess people that do are gonna be well upset.. i'm guessing microsoft will give some sort of compensation to those that are members using xbox original online but like the story says .. ' more details will follow ... '
JCDenton@AS
I think the only game played on the xbox 1 is halo 2 maybe counterstrike..
Hyper_Eye
There are a few original Live games still played regularly: http://majornelson.com/archive/2010/02/03/...f-jan-25th.aspx

Good, that's another $50 bucks I can save from Microsoft... Now that all my connections with MS will be severed, I'll invest my money into Sony's products. biggrin.gif

LOL now you can almost get ONE PS3 game a year
Pseudo99
I still play Splinter Cell online from time to time. Good stuff.

Based on previous "compensation" from MS, they will probably get a shitty XBLA game when they "buy" a xbox 360 lol.

can someone please explain?
i mean, what do they change so that xbox1 games can't use/be played on LIVE anymore?
i'm not into this server/online multiplayer stuff technically, so forgive my ignorance.
but i just can't imagine any reason for shutting down/locking out original xbox games.
it can't be the bandwidth!
at least xbox1 games played on the 360 should be good to go, shouldn't they???
maybe stopping support for the old machine, but not for the games we can play on our 360s.
i don't get it - enlighten me.

One reason maybe the fact that, certain things like the 100 friends list cap restriction can be removed now. Not having to support Xbox1 may open the doors for new features.

I.e. more shit we don't want/need/use.
Tatsh
This is kinda crummy considering how many games run on Xbox 360 and have Live functionality. They should at least let those games run on Live on Xbox 360 consoles only.
jimbobjim
No need for a modchip that can be disabled anymore. Ahhhh, the good ol' days.

I just checked and all DLC for original Xbox titles has been pulled. Thanks for the warning Microsoft.

Well, it's an extra $50, either way. PS3 games cost the same as Xbox 360 games, so I don't get the joke...
jAYrAM
Its official - I can never own with the Belial again. Thanks for making the shitty mech assault 2 backwards compatible but screwing the real fans, microsoft dropped the ball on this one. BUMMER. WHERE IS THE NEW COUNTERSTRIKE!!!! EHHH
Hyper_Eye
Exactly. We need a new Counter-Strike.

Well, simple. Just make it so new features aren't visible on classic Xbox. For example the cap. Make it so X360 players can even use 1.000.000 friends, but original Xbox will still see only 1st 100. Not that hard to code. I call it lazy way out. Especially because they were offering Xbox originals on X360.
halikus
Worse than good, so its bad. One less frill. Us JTAGgers don't care much anyways. This will for sure ruin at least one kids day.
LufianGuy
I haven't used it before, but won't xlink kai and xbconnect still be running strong anyway?

Hopefully it will make it stronger!
hurlamania
The 100 friends limit was hard coded into the original live system according to Microsoft. So I would assume they are redoing the live system to support that. but you would think there would be away to allow them on 360 still?

if i play xbox 1 games on my 360, could i connect to xlink kai without that ugly ping limit?
Sonicjam
fail! i loved playing halo 2 and Rainbowsix 3 on live. they could at least release a client on pc that can emulate the xbox live v1 server. so a person can host it for free put up a site and everyone can join. playing it on xlink kai or xbconnect is ok but only halo 2 has voice activated lan =/
luther349
that sucks. thers still good number of xbox original titles that are still played. splinter cell is a big one it was just better on the original xbox. at least the multiplayer was. halo 2 on the pc being it rans cross platform with xbox live. mech assault 2 never got a 360 release still very played. conkure live and realoded.

i hate it when they just pull the plug on something. why not give the original servers to the community. let them take it over. but i guess that would be imposable without hacking every game to connect to new ips.

better idea give to community with the original ips. and well make it free with one last system update.

Wrong... I used to play a few games on Kai.... Ghost Recon 2 - Summit Strike, MechAssault 1/2, Links 2004, FarCry and few others... and I was able to use my headset to talk to other people.
luther349
yes xlink is a nice alt but it does not support all live game. some didn't have system link to emulate.
xmod4u
"we don't want you to play halo 2 online anymore... ever!"

lmfao

go Kai
luther349
heh im not saying for them not to drop support. hand the support to the community. release the sdk to the public for the original xbox and let us hack away at it. with no live and no games they are no longer making any profit. sega did it for the dreamcast when it died they relesed the full sdk and even some dev units.

NO more Counterstrike! I cant stand it.
TheRealPeppers
I guess there is no more need for me to worry bout making modded xboxes live safe anymore
Haruno
This means live can now support over 200 friends.
There was an interview stating that the reason why there is a friend limit is because of the legacy support.

Next time there's a megan fox event, you'll know that you have a better chance of being on her friend's list smile.gif

Pretty poor really, what backwards compatibility there is for 360 is rendered nigh-on useless now. I've got Halo 2 for PC so not worried about that, but I had been intending on picking up Battlefront 2 again at some point as I've missed that game. Hardly seems worth it now sad.gif

That is also available on PC and you can probably find it for $5.

I tend to agree, u cant innovate unless you move to new hardware, I'm guessing Natal will play a big part in this.

However it's also cool that XBConnect and XLinkKai still work cool.gif
sabbath_dude
This is a bit shitty IMHO. I liked having the option to fire up a bit of Summit Strike or Halo on Xbox1 whenever the mood took me. The BC support for 360 is terrible and most of the games I loved playing don't seem to work on my setup. Even though they're on the list and supposedly supported they still don't run on my PAL monitor over HDMI.
Maybe it's just me but I can't understand why anyone would need or realistically want 100+ friends? huh.gif . Is it going to be like Myspace or Facebook where people just collect a bunch of random friends they never speak to or play with?.

One highlight that comes from this is with copyright protection. I read a story, can't remember when or where, that deals with copyright expirations. The sum of the story said that if software isn't supported anymore then the copyright owner loses the copyright protection.

I don't know the length of time after support stops, or anything else from the article. It makes it interesting though.

Sites could host Slayer's or CASH that contain MS code without retribution. MS has previously stopped support for repairing the original Xbox, so it could be from that date.

I agree that they should hand support over to the community, but actually releasing the sdk to the public could be a security risk for them, still. I'm not positive, as this is outside of my realm of expertise, but if live in it's current form is still based off it's initial inception, then those kind of tools could still be used to hack XBL, potentially. While Sega did this with the DC, it was after they pulled out of the hardware division, completely.
Suicidal Dreams

The biggest downfall for me on this is the loss of Street Fighter 3: 3rd strike on console via live.

It would be really nice if the games could be hacked to allow us to run our own live service, or make the live service free and user controlled......something like that.

same with all the content.

Couple things...

Microsoft's early abandonment of the XBOX is based largely on the legal dispute with NVIDIA which caused them to lose a lot of money of every original XBOX sold.

Knights of the Old Republic is #9 on Major Nelson's list despite the fact it has no multiplayer. This is probably users downloading the DLC.

Hyper Eye pointed out that they've already deleted all DLC for original XBOX games (with no notice, apparently).

Halo 2 and Battlefront 2, both popular on Live, are available for the PC.

You're thinking of trademarks, not copyrights. Trademarks have to be used and defended or they can be lost. Copyrights currently are automatic and last for, well, a really long time that gets even longer every time Disney stuff gets close to falling out of copyright and they lobby Congress to extend the length. Nothing will lose copyright protection because MS took down XB1 live.

That's just one thing. I am sure the complexity of the LIVE service is above and beyond 99.9% of the people that visit this site. There is no telling what small or large details are forcing Microsoft to do this. They can't just go in and start changing lines of code. You could turn a small problem into a huge one and then you have even more pissed off customers.

These developers working for Microsoft aren't the lazy idiots they are sometimes made out to be. It would be more accurate to say they are geniuses and experts in their line of work.

It's the people higher up in the chain of command that are the idiots.

You can still play the originals... just not online. Look at the bright side. XBC and Kai will be busier now.
GOTitCUZiMODDED
Glad I sold off those 35 XBox Live 1 month codes last year! Thanks XBox, it's been a great run. I'll catch you guys on the Kai side.
CompFreak07
First I would like to say I don't necessarily agree with them stopping support for the original Xbox & games. I would like a full explanation as to what changes are being made to cut the support. That is probably to much to ask them for though! I am very pissed at the fact that they did not give this statement prior to pulling all the DLC for the original Xbox. My friends and I would occasionally fire up Halo 2 and play LAN for fun. Now we can still do this but without all the new maps that I paid for back in the day because I had to get a new Xbox 360 because of the RROD and haven't got around to re-downloading all my content. One of the reasons i believe they might of decided to cut support is, stated by GOTitCUZiMODDED, many people still use and/or sell the two month Xbox live codes (that don't expire) found in many original Xbox games and then transfer them to their Xbox 360. Anyways thanks again Microsoft for pissing thousands of people off yet again!

Thanks for heads up! Now I have to find my old xbox with all halo 2 maps. Microsoft is starting to become like EA. Pga Tour 2005 no longer online.
And has anyone been able to play orig bad company for 360 online? That game was fun.
xjustsumloserx
it's fucking stupid. No one has 100 friends (of value that they play with regularly) and needs more. I still play Conker Live and Reloaded, Halo 2 and my friends and I were going to start playing phantom dust again. Another BS move from Microsoft. One of my biggest complaints is there will be no way to get the DLC for these games anymore. Most people don't know, but there is a gltich that makes DLC on many original xbox games "expire" if the game is not played within like 3 months. Last time I logged onto Mechassault 2 the DLC was damaged AGAIN, so I had to redownload it. BAD MOVE.
