Full Version: Setting Xbmc As My Dash-- How To Do It On A Mac?

I currently have Unleash as my dash -- I would LOVE to change it to XBMC. I've read through the tutorials and the methods all seem to make sense but I don't know how to go about doing it on my MAC. Has anyone had any experience with this that might be able to help me? I've read a lot of recommendations to use the Team XBMC Shortcut.xbe, but as far as I can see, that isn't mac compatible. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you.

The Team XBMC Shortcut is for use on the X-Box. Your Mac can't process it, but that's irrelevant - neither can a normal PC.

When changing dash for the first time, you first need to determine where your current dash is located on the HDD. Be careful not to confuse your dashboard with your softmod, if using one. It would pay to backup your EEPROM if you haven't done so already.

Thank you Bomb Bloke,

Do you know where I can go about getting the pre-compiled OpenXDK Shortcut XBE file? (default.xbe?) It is a broken link on the wiki xbmc site and I can't seem to find it anywhere else...

I have not created a EEPROM backup yet-- is there a tutorial you can direct me to on how to do it?

Thank you kindly for your help.

The shortcut comes with XBMC when you download it - in the directory \_tools\. Just rename the xbe and the .cfg files to have the same name as your current dash (i.e. probably default.xbe and default.cfg), and edit the .cfg file to point to your XBMC installation.

Use Config Magic or Evox to take an eeprom backup.

Wow, is that all I have to do? Let me just lay it out so I know I have it right--- (it sounds too good to be true)

-FTP into my xbox
-Find my XBMC folder (think it's in the Apps folder on E?)
-Rename the xbe and cfg files to the same name as my current dash
-edit the .cfg file to direct to the XBMC installation - example: E:\apps\XBMC\default.xbe

Do I leave them in the XBMC folder or place the newly created ones somewhere else?
What do I do with the unleash files that are my current main dash? Do I have to rename those files or put them in a new location?

Thanks so much for your help.

Yes, that's more or less right. I'd do the renaming and editing on my desktop (it's easier with a real keyboard), then FTP the resulting files to my Xbox.

Obviously leaving the shortcut files in the \_tools\ folder would do no good at all. Think about it - you want your Xbox to boot XBMC instead of UnleashX, so you have to replace your current UnleashX default.xbe with the shortcut default.xbe and default.cfg.

Thank you so much. I'm up and running with XBMC now. smile.gif
