If you don't like the over-played commercial stuff above, try to find anything by DJ Shinkawa.

http://www.djshinkawa.com
He's amazing, although he does definitely have bad nights too, when he's not really trying. I've not been out clubbing in a while, but I might go out just to hear him again. He's the quietest you'll ever meet. You have to beat a greeting out of him, but he can bang the toons. As before, I've not been out in a while, BUT, some oldies but definitely fucking goodies:
Go to the "works" link:
[ORIGINAL ALBUM SIDE]

make a miracle
KISS-O-Matic - he actually remixed this. It is:
1: the best UK-Hard House track ever
2: one of the most sought-after records in Japan (500 copies only)
3: The sexiest track I've ever heard
4: Old, but he still plays it. It's his baby.
5: Also rereleased on Club Shinkawa Vinyl (and mixed into the mix CD)

VIRTUAL-ON "ORATORIO TANGRAM"
V.A This is lame, but worth mentioning. He wasn't really "allowed" to be creative. They kinda told the artists how the tracks should sound. Lots of other Japanese dj's on this.

THE AFTER WORLD
'98 (PARATONE) - Very nice, but the recording quality of the record is total bullshit. Two sided -- Afterworld and The Kitchen Dancer - both great tracks.

CROSS and OVER
Crossover is the party he's been a resident of for the last fucking forever. The CDs are good, but have some lame shit on them two. A10, is fucking unBELIEVABLE and Critical Mass is also a nice glittery techno track.

[REMIX Stuff]
Tidy Trax: This happens quite a bit. A label hires a JPN DJ to remix their tracks for a mix CD. This CD, is really good, especially if you like Tidy Trax stuff.

Club Shinkawa: Hybrid Hard House: Not bad, but him playing live is better.

No joke, I've had 2 nights out that I will *NEVER* ever forget. They involved me, one friend (and an extra on one night) and Shinkawa, rocking the house. No chics, no bullshit, just listening to his music from roughly 4AM to 10AM and two different clubs... we even walked from club to club in the nasty ass Sunday morning metropolis of Tokyo. Aaah...memories... I"m getting a bit teary-eyed.

I even told him a week or two later... "Dude -- do that again!" He was a bit puzzled. I'm not sure if he knows he has up and down times. He's kinda seasonal.

Might be hard to find the stuff, but worth it if you do.

too bad cRAP is dead along with him and no one gives a fuck. Rap has always sucked, Hip Hop is where it was at.

Anyway the moment we've all been waiting for! Adam Freeland - Fear (Area 5 [Rez edit]).

Great track one of breakbeats finest.

*save target for all you geniuses.

An element of hip hop is an MC. You don't need a rapper, but they're still part of the culture.

And as far as Hip Hop DJs go... I went up to Vancouver one night to watch A-Trak DJ. Wow. A 15 year old child cutting up the records better than anyone I'd seen in a long time.

Not sure why everyone is on Tiesto's nutz all the time. Goryella was fun about what... 3 years ago? there's so many in trance production... it just gets old to me, but then again, I started clubbing 10 years ago, so I'm prolly a veteran (or old fart) compared to most here. One time in a September (Typhoon season in my neighborhood) I was at a dinner w/ some friends. Pete Wardman was there (at the dinner) for a tour. He was asking about the weather, and I said, "We're on Tsunami watch". My quick-witted Irish friend came back with, "What's that? We make sure that DJ Tiesto doesnt' put out any more shit records?" I laughed my balls off. For those that don't know - Tsuami's a label that Tiesto puts stuff out on.

it all come down to good track selection

It doesn't ALL come down to track selection. That's exactly 50% of the job. The other 50% is the way you mix the records, which a lot of DJs listed in this thread can't do "well". Just b/c you can match a beat and mix the last 20 seconds of two songs doesn't make you a good DJ. You pick the toons, then you play them. You pick shit tunes - you're a shit DJ. You just lay two tracks over the other - you're a studio DJ, and should stick to mix CDs.

IMHO, if you can't do any of the following on a regular through a 2 hour set, your'e average at best:
1) Hold a mix for 2 minutes
2) Mix things that "aren't supposed to be mixed together" - this is the sign of a great DJ
3) Use 3 decks
4) Make *me* go "wow!" (again - I'm spoiled)

Of course, if you can do 2 or 3 of the above (which some people can) you're great. Shinkawa, the DJ I mentioned, on a great night, can make 2 decks sound like 3 (I still have no idea how he did it, but he did, and I'm a music geek. I *WATCH* the guys DJ when I go out). Generally, he can mix two songs that don't "match" for 2 minutes, and it sounds awesome.

Even if you pick a genre that someone doesn't like, if you mix it well, you can still have a moving set. Most of the cheesy DJ's pick tunes "right in the middle" to make the mainstream clubber happy, so it's less of a challenge to fill a club. Maybe Fokus will jump in here. One of about 3 house DJs that I actually like. I hate house... just too happy for me, but his mixing is inventive, totally makes up for me not liking the music style.

Hey GAIJIN PUNCH Thanks for the Compliment! biggrin.gif

Yeah those 4 are pretty much what make a great dj...Ive only been doing for 8 years now and I can finally say Ive done 3 out of your 4.

Thats nothing compared to the pros who have been in it since their teen age days, like David Morales, he's been at it since the 70s. And he is one of my favs, a prefect example of someone mixing sounds together that wouldnt be done or even thought of by another dj! But thats where I learn from. wink.gif

One important thing that a dj should never forget is to show his emotions in the booth. Too many djs are turntable mixer masterbaters...they just have their face on the decks and the mixer, and when they look at the crowd they seem unhappy...That is just lame, dance goove , jump up and down scream, whistle, ENTERTAIN for heavens sake. Be a rock star for the set.

Those are the words I go by when Im in the booth, I just love music and I cant stop jumpin and dancing while playing, and the crowd loves that.

The worst deck/mixer masterbater and biggest dissapointment of all djs Ive seen has to be Sasha, what a boring prick to watch. Seemed like he had a broomstick up his ass during the whole set, made smug faces at the crowd, just lame...especially coming from a "pro".

PS I should have a website up soon...will post the link if anyone is interested in visiting

I agree - but there's a limit. You ever been to a Yoji Biomehanika show? He plays NU-NRG, and is a talented DJ, but he does more dancing than DJ'ing sometimes. RR Fierce (may he rest in peace) and Karim were playing at his residence, and he told them, "You guys need to dance more". They weren't "dead" in the booth by any stretch of the imagination, but compared to him they were.

I think there are some DJ's that just don't have it them. Shinkawa for example, is just not an emotional person, at all. As before, you have to beat a greeting out of him practically. When he DJs, he smiles and whatnot, but for the most part, he's "working". You can see it in his eyes, and more importantly - hear it in his mixes.

i'd have to say primo, for all you hip-hop heads out there...
Fokus
Yeah of course Ive seen Yoji, I headlined with him at the Asian Music Expo 2 years ago in Pusan S.Korea...anyho...Yeah he goes hardcore, I think because he used to be a rock'n'roller before.

I just think its really cool if the dj gets into his music, smiling is good for sure...I just meant djs that just look like they arent enjoying what they are doing. And acting smug and "IM THE SUPER STAR OF THE WORLD" kind of expressions are lame...

So you gonna come to The Frogrique on the 1st of august? Lots of Models and wicked music!
