Infineon has taken what it claims is the world record for the highest clocked integrated circuit with a chip that operates at 110GHz - more than 34 times faster than the top-clocked Pentium 4.
The record was broken in the company's labs in Munich. Infineon got the chip running between ten and 30 per cent faster than rival offerings, it claimed.
The IC in question, a dynamic frequency divider, was produced using its Silicon Germanium bipolar process. Infineon claims the technology can be used to build chips that will be able to operate at up to 200GHz.
Of course, none of them are designed for computing applications - Infineon's SiGe chips are being developed for high-speed communications systems such as mobile phone base stations and microwave radio links, and high frequency applications like car anti-collision systems and ultra wideband (UWB) communications devices. ®

isn't it like, technology speed doubles every two years? this would really break that rule. I wonder how they have achieved such speeds with current technology. think it'd be interesting to see what intel isn't doing.

it's all about economics and when things come affordable or cheap will the mass population ever see the greater of our technologies. Some day better off people will be giving away their slow 110 ghz pc to poor people.

i bought my Athlon Tbird 1400MHz exactly 2 years ago..it was top of the line from AMD on a desktop, and i bought it the second day it was released. now its a piece of shit (almost). so i wouldnt be surprised to see that in a desktop in the very near future.

Only 110Ghz? RSFQ which is an older technology peak performance speed using an old fab method was 770Ghz...
Superconductive technology is pretty fast.

But most experimental supercomputing never reaches the public...

ive heard that intel is discontinuing the pentium line when theyve finished with 4 since they feel that most home users arent gonna need anything faster than that, but this was a while ago, so i dont know where the standing is now
to the post earlier about emulating a monkey, the funny thing is most brains actually are fairly slow (MHz wise) but they (like evrything in nature) are analog processors, so a digital chip could never truly achive its complexity

I always had the impression that
the processing power was not really
a problem, but it was the architecture
to support it. What would be the point
of having a 110 ghz processor if
you didn't have the backbone to
make use of it?
Just a thought
Correct me if I am wrong.

wa? it will use pure software renderring (meaning it will have no graphics chip), and it will handle all networking, and will give amazing graphics!
fo0 the problem was with heat, i believe. standard type processors couldn't get over 15ghz.

| IBM has not announced when it will release the final [Cell] chip, but the Cell project was originally envisioned as taking five years, suggesting that the final product may not be ready until as late as 2007. Although Sony refuses to talk about its future plans for the chip, it does admit that the Cell chip will not be the CPU in the Playstation3, reportedly slated for release in 2005. |

Centron is only for notebooks...
I believe they are staying with the P4 but always end up building a new core such as Northwood and Centerwood and stuff

i checked with several sites, and they say they tried to contact sony to get the exact quote from them saying 'the ps3 will not be using the cell chip' but it has received no responses.
again, that is what the article said. also, think about it....sony did not work on the ps3 because it expected the 'cell' to handle everything (graphics, networking, audio, everything). so it couldn't possibly look to power its console another way with such short notice.
but hey, power to you. i'll enjoy my 250ghz chip.

i remember reading about 4 months ago in the newspaper, that the human brain is equal to a 30 terrabyte processor or someshit. i wondered how backed up that statement was tho. caus it was compairing the newest supercomputer built in new Jersey, which was designed to "emulate" the earth or someshit, and they said that while it is equal to a human brain in processing power, physical volume wise a human brain wins for ages to come.....
