Ez0n3, freakdave & weinerschnitzel released a new version of Surreal64 CE, a Nintendo64 emulator for the Xbox1:
Surreal64 CE is a continuation of the Surreal64 project where Team XXX left off. Originally developed by oDD and Lantus, Surreal64 included ports of three Win32 based Nintendo64 emulators including 1964, Project64 and UltraHLE. Our goal is to improve Nintendo64 emulation on the XBOX with the addition of:
- New or updated N64 emulators - New or updated video, audio and RSP plugins - Improved controls - a user friendly and skinnable GUI
Changes since B5.4:
Added: * Native 720p output for all video plugins and the launcher * Full Screen Anti Aliasing modes up to 4x * VSYNC setting to eliminate tearing * Save state previews * Paths for Saves and Screenshots * Mupen64plus updated JttL audio plugin (still testing) * M64p HLE RSP plugin (Hacktarux & Azimer) * HLE RSP plugin (Hacktarux, Surreal CVS) * New setting UseRspAudio * Rom history which auto-selects the last rom at launch * Option to toggle background music for the launcher * Launch current rom using Y from the emulator settings menu * Temporary messages (as known from Surreal 1.0) for launcher and all video plugins * UltraHLE mem settings to ini - Ultra Code Mem/Ultra Group Mem * Favorites for rom list from Surreal 1.0 (BLACK = list all/favs, WHITE = add/rem fav) * Skin.ini for many new skinning features * XMV Video support * Real Time Clock support for 1964 (thanks to Shapyi and zoinkity) * EmuXtras Synopsis by MegaMan(?)
Changed: * Music Manager so that it plays more than one wma file (LEFT THUMBSTICK = next track) * Deadzone now calculated as a percentage of total range * Load/Save State text to reflect date created * Paging methods now user defined setting in Launcher * Max Video Mem so that 0 is auto (keep to 2MB free) * Set VertexMode default to 2 (hardware) * Stripped non audio SDLx code from JttL * Toggling menu items in Launcher/IGM does now also work with DPAD/LEFT THUMBSTICK * Expanded ingame debug info output * Control Config Panel reorganized to better fit an image panel
Fixed: * Mempak issue (still needs work - UltraHLE is still missing) * Rice Video 5.60 fog reverted to that of Rice Daedalus 5.10 * Screenshot name problems * Switching paks in menu issue * Countless ini fixes for all Rice plugins, PJ64, 1964 (BIG thx scorp316) * GoldenEye crashes if 4 players were facing each other in multiplayer (UltraHLE) * Minor core (1964) and dynarec (1964/PJ64) optimizations * Increased volume for launcher and all sound plugins except Basic Audio (missing source code) * Several missing boxarts * Squished boxarts
Other: * Consistent PAL and NTSC definitions * Added libSDLx source from HuntsVegas * Moved all OSD code into a single file * Added Build.bat * Added Profile, Profile_FastCap, and Release_LTCG configs * Changed all projects to have unique GUID's * Switched launcher ini parser to simpleini * Mem Decommit from 1964/PJ64 to UltraHLE for IGM * Added Doom 64 1.1 to boxarts (rename of existing) * Added GoldenEye:X to Surreal.ini
Hehe. Yeah what gives? Why isn't there an emulator for the 360? It's more than powerful enough isn't it?

Stop giving me Randy Savage-esque (R.I.P.) heart attacks. I always think it is for 360 the first few seconds, whenever I see releases on this page.
Probably cool and all - but DAMN we need emulators and media center for the 360.

Anyone know if this upscales 720p to 1080i? My TV unfortunately doesn't support 720p.

Sorry, no dice for 1080i. I would recommend using AntiAliasing on 480p. 2x Quincunx should improve your picture pretty well. 4x Gaussian is the best, but only use that if you have the spare memory. You won't notice anything but a framerate drop with debug info on. So if you want to notice the difference AA makes turn debug info off.
Can we have the 2 release threads merged, pretty please?

Great info, thanks. I appreciate all the work that went into this and the final product.

Will there ever be an upscale option for 1080i? I realize 1080i native is nearly impossible.

Glad to see it released...
This must have been posted in a noob forum or something...
Although, I know people are always hoping for better emu's on newer systems... they must take a look at the current conditions and state of affairs with those systems...
As for N64: the surreal team are the most intuitive and committed people on the job....
and 5.5 is the most exciting n64 emu out there, period! (across all platforms)
Great work guys!

How would I go about putting Surreal into 480p? It worked on 5.4 without configuration, now I'm stuck at a black screen with the dash music playing which means I'm in 720p mode. Where in the .ini can I configure the reso. settings?

Go into your dashboard (Unleash-X, whatever) video settings and disable 720p (so that only 480p is checked), now try again...

Fuck off haters if you want surreal64 than get an xbox period its the best emulator console and continues to be updated thanks to the amazing efforts of a good amount of coders and porters not interesting in releasing their hard work on a limited jtag base. Thank you Team Surreal for this great release by far the best N64 emulator on xbox or any console

To all involved in the project,
I know you've spent many hours (to say the least) on this project. I couldn't be more excited to try this out. The past N64-CE emulators were phenomenally polished, and worked great. I am sure this one will be no different.
I especially can't wait to see the new video preview function in action!
I have been frequently checking for this announcement, I'm super excited!
Finally, Thanks for your efforts and contributions to the scene. I have loved my xbox and all its abilities since its launch. And I know many other people here do too.

Seriously though what an amazing homebrew machine the xbox was and still is. My bro picked one up in cash converters for 12 quid, mint condish. I soft modded for it him then put xbmc4xbox + icefilms plugin and its f'ing awesome. This + all the new bits n pieces getting released all the time makes me wanna get another one.

Thank you for updates. Much apretiated.

---- Long version for the haters ---
to the 360 people who dont appretiate and assume that its time for change.
Its not up to you nor I what these people work on. Theire projects are there own, and they obviously enjoy tweaking things untill it is perfect (how they think it should be) And you cant just say. "ENOUGH OF THIS MOVE ON"
Too many things have been started then ended before they became all they could be, or that the creator had hoped them to be. And i think its admirable that some chose to keep developing a project even under relentless attacks from people who i will now refer to as "is this all we get-ers".
i understand how you can be upset about not having something you want when others seemingly have it in abundace, but Think about this.
What if people started making an emus for the 360 and a while after before the emus were fully finished a new console came out. and a handfull of people had it to a state where it could play emulators. And then those people came in to the xbox360 forum being "Is this all we get-ers" would you honestly think
"they have the right to be here. its time they stoped working on this emulator on this console and moved on to work on projects for those dozen people who are hating."
or would you more likley think.
"well thats just dumb. this guy is working on a project for this console, its in this consoles forum and these "is this all i get-ers" need too man up cry me a river build me a bridge and get the hell over it."

small bug. when i try to set my SAVES folder to E:\TDATA\a64fea57\ it won't let me scroll down all the way. it just stops after a few folders.
that folder is where all my saves were from b5.4. i now know b5.5 creates a folder for each game and saves that data in their own folders. so i load the games first, then later on i copy the old saves into their game folders.
so that scroll bug might want to get looked into. thanks!

Thanks for bringing that to our attention HeeZy, it's being addressed

--
As for 360 stuff, it's a completely different architecture (Xbox1=x86, Xbox360=PPC). The programs included in Surreal were written for Windows x86, not PPC. If "porting" x86 to PPC were easy, it would already be done. If/when someone does manage to pull it off, it will be in the
Xbox360 Forums and not the
Xbox1 Forums.
Most developers are just people that got sick of waiting.

May 28 2011, 09:55 AM
A BIG DAY in N64 emulation
In my SDTV all the games are running the best they can thanks to the ini
and now in my HDTV my mario64 looks so much more polished in 720p
I would say in 720p it depends of the games: mario64, starfox64,starwars racer, diddy kong racing are looking better and perfectly playable (its a little less more smooth than in 480p but real excellent render)
now for games like the zelda , mariokart, the memory seems at its limit and the gameplay is slow in 720p (but perheaps i could check some option to have both zelda smooth in 720p?)
I have lot less graphics glitches on the games now (i don't know if its thanks to the inis or the new rice pluggins?)
thanks to all involved

Agreed

the 360 may have upcoming games(how long will that last?) but all of its game can't compare to the amount of Xbox gamers can play on a modded console espicially since Games today seem to be less on story and originality but graphics and mindless gameplay. Next Generation may be even less hackable then the 360 and even less apps and emus for it so I think its obvious the Xbox is the #1 emulator console
Thanks Again Surreal

Mario Kart 64 runs brilliantly with this new version - even in 720p. Actually, what I notice more than the high definition is the effect of vsync - it makes it look so much better!
Only problem for me is that my TV overscans, so some of the text of the skins are off-screen. Are there any plans for skin and in-game screen resizing in a future version?
Thanks again for an amazing release!

I got Super Mario 74 (100 Star Demo) working by adding this to 1964.ini:
[635a42c5-bdc58edc-C:45]
Game Name=SUPER MARIO 74
Alternate Title=Super Mario 74 (U hack) [!]
RDRAM Size=2
Counter Factor=3
DMA=2
Assume 32bit=1
Use LLE RSP=1
Basically, what Mario 64's stuff was plus that line. I'm assuming that did the trick. The first 3 Rice Video Plugins work with it flawlessly. Also added this to the Surreal ini for it to see it:
[635a42c5-bdc58edc-C:45]
Game Name=SUPER MARIO 74
Alternate Title=Super Mario 74 (U hack) [!]
Comments=Plays perfectly

Updated version is up with the fix for the menu path bug pointed out by HeeZy.
Mario Kart should run good. Also try changing the rom paging method to 1.0 - MK is one of the games that benefits from that. Might push the mem over though if you're running at 720.
Another thing to poke around with is setting the video memory to 0/Auto. It will try to keep more textures in memory and free them up when the mem hits 2MB free. It's somewhat experimental still.
TY for the info crispy4004, we'll try that and add it to the ini's

Ya edwardar, we're hoping for a screen resizer in the next one. I get bad overscan also.

Hi there guys, well done for the latest release!
Ive FTP'd it to my Xbox and am trying it out, i tried Mario 64 that worked perfectly.
However im having some real issues with a couple of my favourite games:
Star Wars Shadow of the Empire- all the writing on the screen is jumbled up and i cant read any text so cant even start a game, its launching with 1964 using Rice 6.11 (the default settings?)
Fzero X- When i load the game using the default, 1964 and Rice 5.10 settings i get a black screen and the Xbox has crashed and needs a manual reboot.
Im using this xbox on a standard crt tv with component video, no 480/ 720 although i do have another xbox in the lounge on a 720 LCD tv- but ive not installed surreal64 5.5 on that xbox yet...
Should i use different settings for the above games?
Many thanks for your hard work guys!
EDIT: I just tried Star Wars again using all the different combination of rice settings on the different loaders and it seems that 1964 using Rice 6.11 is the best option.
I got the game going (although i couldnt read what was written onscreen!)
Level 1 plays fine.
Level 2 when your running around as FPS i get smudges on the main character when moving around- pretty much the same as it was before?
Any tips guys, some settings to change to get it working? I remember playing this game to death when i had an N64 would be great to be able to play it again without the problems!

Many thanks to the team
I only use my N64 for Sin&Punishment and Bangaioh, but unfortunately, i tried many settings, and the only way to have Sin&Punishment at full speed is to disable sound....any speed improvment to come for Sin&Punishment ? Or maybe others settings i didnt tried ?

Thanks for all the hard work, I'm glad to see another release
In 3 player (Haven't tried 4 yet) Mario Kart, it actually runs faster than a real n64

. Audio seems more crackly than 5.4 though, even using the exact same plugin (Jttl). I generally play on an SD tv, but I'm looking forward to trying it out in 720p. On the topic of SD, there are now overscan issues with the skin.
I did a mempak test with Mario Kart and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Mario Kart didn't work, THPS did. I didn't attempt any work around by swapping paks with mario kart, just left mempak as default. It's nice seeing the notifications back in.
Although the 4-players-looking-at-each-other-bug in Goldeneye may have been fixed, multiplayer is still a no go. Interesting bug to find. How did someone manage to get a multiplayer match to last long enough to get 4 players staring each other down? No shots fired? (When you get the gunshot and character sound effects going is when it seems more likely to crash).
I assume the online manual section on the wikidot page will contain info such as...
Benefits of the different paging methods (1.0 vs XXX)
Performance and quality comparisons of each audio plugin? (In general, assuming a certain plugin will actually work with a game).
How RSP can affect performance?
Yes, this info can be found by searching but having it all either in a readme or on the site would be nice.
Also, is there no way to get preview images to show up for the skins on the wikidot page? Right now it's just an annoyance, but as more skins become available it might be necessary.

how about a n64 emulator for 360 already!!
weinerschnitzel
May 29 2011, 09:39 PM
Mario Kart is one of the games that runs better with 1.0 paging. B5.4 would use 1.0 paging unless the person had extra ram, then they would be using the XXX method and cache the whole rom. Sound quality is effected by this. Mario Kart also overclocks the N64 so there are those speed ups. Saving a ghost works fine for me, can you be more specific as to where you are getting the mempak issue?
The GoldenEye D listing bug was noticed when troubleshooting the same crashes that we think are with syncing. Because it's random, it's just about impossible to reproduce it accurately, aside from knowing that it happens when soundfx get really excited. With all the time spent on it, the solution has to lie in a different emulator.
F-Zero X works fine for me with Rice 5.10, I like using Rice 5.60 though, with AA and Vsync on. Any audio plugin works. 720p is a no-go, so make sure its off.
Sin & Punishment is one I haven't tried.
For Star Wars, Rice 6.11 was added back in because of issues that came with the added ucodes in Rice 6.12. For this game in particular. There are a few things that need to be fixed for Rice6 and we would want to get those out of the way before picking the ucode changes apart. For the being use 6.11 for gameplay and 612 if you need to read anything :/
The manual still needs work and those are exactly the kinds of questions we would like to answer.
Quickly:
HLE RSP - by Hacktarux, costs ~2MB, gains RSP gfx, like jpg backgrounds (think Zelda)
LLE RSP - by Jabo, costs ~4MB, gains RSP gfx and allows RSP A listing. Experiment with this for added stability to audio in particular. PJ64 would use this with RSP A listing on.
M64Plus RSP - by Hacktarux & Azimer, costs ~3MB, gains RSP gfx and allows RSP A listing. This is a great alternative to LLE RSP when an RSP plugin is needed.
1964 doesn't need an RSP plugin, so HLE RSP will suffice if the gfx fixes are needed. PJ64 needs the RSP plugin so using a high level RSP plugin will have gains.
1.0 paging is known to make gameplay smoother, but Team XXX added a VMM that was intended to be faster and to prevent crashes to the IGM. Team XXX's paging method also will cache the whole rom into memory if the xbox has 128mb ram.
Good suggestion for the skins, I'll modify the template and we'll get pictures up soon enough.
Thanks for the feedback!

Excellent work guys! so pleased the N64 is being worked on again for xbox and glad to see the ini is still being used

This goldeneye post intrigues me, so what exactly is going on with goldeneye multiplayer. Are you saying that it will never work multiplayer (on a 64meg system) and that a dedicated emu would be required?
The only two games I would want to play multiplayer on n64 would be goldeneye and perfect dark especially. I realise this is probably not possible but still I invite anyone who HAS got it working to please share their secrets with me

I tried both the (U)[!] and (J)(1.1)[!] versions of Mario Kart. Both verified with good tools. Ghost data saves properly and is available until you either reset or exit the game. When you reload the rom, it's gone. The mempak saves are valid, I've ftp'd them over to my pc pj64 and it loads them fine. In Surreal, once I reload the rom I think it writes over it with a new pak instead of loading the previous.
I notice in the (J) version the character animations goof in the 'select your character' screen. Is there an ini setting wrong or is something different here than the (U) version?
Btw, thanks for a little taste of the info that will be up on the online manual

I believe it has the same name xyteam. You can re-download the entire thing or just grab the patch.
We'll look into it Xboxer64, maybe try settings the default pak to mempak.
