I've had this Xbox for ages and just recently it's been making popping sounds when I turn it on --- it seems like the sound is coming from the power supply. After the popping it smells like burnt electronics (the scent stays in my room for days too). Once it's on it usually doesn't make the sound anymore, but this has been happening just about every time I turn it on. I've opened the system and cleaned the dust from the power supply using compressed air. Everything looks fine for the most part.
I may take the power supply out completely and double check it. Can't imagine what could be the problem other than the fact that it's about 10 years old at this point. I use the replacement power cord given by microsoft (the one that still doesn't save the xbox, but prevents a fire). For the reason that my Xbox qualified for the power cord replacement (meaning it's the older, unsafe Xbox) is this basically a normal occurrence?
I appreciate any tips and advice. Thanks
