I am about to get a jtag 360 and was wondering if I can use a 500Gb hdd in the original hdd housing and just use it that way WITHOUT having to change the firmware, etc. with the hdss.bin file, etc?

put the drive in the shell, format it in nxe/metro, you're good to go.
maybe not obvious to you, but the drive can't then go into a retail box.
