Hi
I want to connect my xbox 360 drive to an old watt PSU in order to power it up. In fact I have 2 of them. One is 400W and the other one 300W, But I want to know if its safe to make an attempt.

I know the pinout from the xbox 360 drive power cable and the psu atx pinouts in order to connect them. If I connect them safely is there any problem? Does my PSU need to output exact values of 12V, 5V and 3.3V?

I am asking because I used a multimeter and i see that one psu outputs 11.36V, 5.25V and 3.42V insead of 12V, 5V and 3.3V respectively. The other one outputs 12.01V, 5.28V and 3.36V.

Do I have to care about the Amps of my PSU?

I used to have ck3 pro but I have sold it. I dont want to spend money for this again. Also I do not want to connect the drive to xbox 360 motherboard for the obvious reasons.

I have and example from a dude in youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cfb8qM4ldcg
Thank you

I actually did this mod just last night.

I soldered the 12v and Ground points from the 360 board to an ATX PSU. It had a 12v 14 amp rating. The 360 is a Zephyr version. I manually powered on the ATX psu then turned on the 360 via the RoL button.

Then I smelled something burning from the 360, but no smoke came out since I quickly cut off the power.

I guess I shorted something out, but I tested the soldered points from the 360 board, and It had no shorts though.

Good luck!

Why not wire to a molex or sata?
dimsteryor
Molex does not output 3.3V. I searched the site and I see that you need a dropout voltage regulator.

Sata power cable from the psu does output 3.3V. http://pinouts.ru/Power/sata-power_pinout.shtml

Can I use sata as source? Is it safe?

To be sure, measure it with a multi-meter. As long as it provides "stable" 3.3v, then it's no problem.

I did try the SATA method but no luck for me, hope you have some better results as it should be possible if you know how

I've done this mod years ago and it still works fine.
