Full Version: Kotor Impressions?

Shadowland
I see all these thread about KotOR not working one way or another, but none about what everyone thinks about it or how for they are.

So, what character are you using? How far are you? What do you think so far?

Myself; I'm about 11 hrs in and I've just finished my Jedi apprentice mission, so I'm officially a pawadan learner baby!

Male: Light Side
Level 2 Consular Jedi (green lightsaber)
Level 9 Soldier

Everything has been great so far. Story, voice acting, graphics, control. Combat of course has a PC feel to it, but it serves its purpose just fine. My only gripe so far is that once you start a battle the only way to end it is either defeating your opponent or when you die. I'm on a mission where I'd like to blow by a guardian droid but my two team members keep hack'n'slashing away = frustrating.

Other than that KotOR is pretty groovy so far.

I don't think I'm gonna get it. I just got Morrowind and now I'm just gonna wait for Fable...not that I haven't been waiting from day one...LOL. I hear a lot of crap about how the saves freeze and stuff. Same with Morrowind though, maybe XBOX RPGs are just messed up like that.
Booger Bob
I think the game is good the only thing i dont like is the fighting. i was hoping to be able to bitch slap someone with my lightsaber kinda like jedi knight 2, but i still like it

I think this game is truly amazing. I have never been into the time consuming RPG's, I am more of a sports gamer. I thought I would try something different and now I am truly addicted. There haven't been many games that have kept me playing 7 hours straight. Anyone who hasn't picked this up, I would advise you to, that is of course you don't have a job an plan on your friends thinking you fell off the face of the earth. laugh.gif

I can't remember the last time I spent nearly 12 hours straight in one day before, if I even have. The last game to do that probably would have been Asheron's Call. Anyways, the game rocks, it's addictive, it's fun, it's Star Wars, it rocks. I have about 13 1/2 hours of play in and I am about to leave Dantooine. Good thing my job doesn't start until next week or I would be out of a job. =)

If you are on the fence, or not thinking of getting it, if you like RPGs or Star Wars then give it some more thought.

PS
The graphics are great, but only thanks to the artists, not the game's technical prowess. It doesn't have great special effects that make you amazed that it can run even on the XBOX, it looks like it could be the Jedi Knight II engine (but with better artists doing the design), and the framerate is pretty low pretty much all the time. When you are used to 30fps at the lowest, this game can look pretty choppy sometimes, but if you play the game you really won't care about all this because it is just so damn good. Excellent balance, and if you don't think so, you can even adjust the difficulty on the fly. What a great game.

I never liked neverwinter nights of baldurs gate too much but I think this game is simply amazing. I'm a level 9 or 10 soldier/jedi guardian with a light saber in each hand ohmy.gif I'm on the darkside and I think it's just awesome smile.gif Can't wait to get all the darkside powers muhaha.gif

The combat is a lot of fun, but I come from the PC gaming of RPGs. We've been pausing real time battles for a while.

The game is awesome...I haven't played a game at a 5 hour strech in a longtime. I am really excited for the PC version which will graphically blow this one out of the water. This one has framerate issues and jaggies and some dismal textures. But overall it is a beautiful game...I just wish the framerate would get up there consistently.

Still...I have a few more hours I need to play...I might try it on my HDTV...but I bet the jaggies will be glaring.

i have to admit, i also love this game. the framerate and battlescenes bug the heck outta me. i just want to go up and slash people. and i really like how the tell the whole history of the sith during the load time. im only 3 hours in but its still hella addicting
buckwilliamsca
Is totally addictive one word? This game is light-years ahead of all other rpgs. Personally, ive never played an rpg before (other than morrowind) because i hated them, however, this game is simply amazing, with its intuitive controls, and immersive game-play (sorry, reading from back of box biggrin.gif ).

Two questions though:
1. Why is KOTOR retailing here in canada for $65? Im not complaining, but most new game retail for about $75 up here...

2. Where are those darn caves on dantoine (spelling? the jedi hideout) you know the ones where you can get the crystals for your light saber?

Anyway, this game is a buy, not a rent, youll end up paying for it in over due charges if you try to rent... biggrin.gif biggrin.gif its your destiny...

wow.... talk about glowing reviews cool.gif

as an rpg and star wars fan i'm quite excited to try this out to say the least

Yeah I've only played a couple of hours but so far I think the game's prety cool. I'm not a big fan of the RPG genre so the battles are kinda annoying to me. They call them "real-time battles" but they seem pretty much like your average RPG battle to me. I wish the fighting was more in the style of Jedi Knight II or Obi Wan.
Achtung
The best Star Wars game period. I hate RPG's too, and I love this game, Great story great graphics totally addicting, If you even remotely like star wars and/or RPGs you have to get this game I think it may end up being the game the year.

Didn't realize I was spoiling anything wink.gif I guess I could've just mentioned exactly what the mission was and exactly what to do in said mission rolleyes.gif

This seems more like an adventure game than an RPG... Morrowind owns this bullshit, especially since you can use plugins for the pc version on it. And I have not had any save problems with KOTOR or Morrowind... Pirates of the Caribbean is buggy as fuck though still kind of fun for a 15 hr adventure game.
jtsurfs
Morrowind is GAY, KOTOR RULEZ!!! tongue.gif imo

Ok heres my opinion, I played the game for about 2 hours, not all that incredible to me, yah I like it and I'll certainly play it until I beat it but the game seems laggy to me at some points which I really dont like, too many load points (each load time too long). Gameplay is interesting, I don't like not being able to control my attacks. We'll see if my opinion gets better or worse as I play more.
CyberPunk
its ok.. not worth all the ranting about it though.

"mememe im a level 11 jedi slut... mememe i just competed the give darth vader head mission memememe"

those of you having problems off the HDD could try changing the "swdirsXbox.ini" to the correct info.

I'm converted as well... hate RPGs LOVE this fucking game!!!

ANY fan of Star Wars, this should be a no-brainer...

2. Where are those darn caves on dantoine (spelling? the jedi hideout) you know the ones where you can get the crystals for your light saber?

south of the courtyard , thats all i can really saycause i don't really remember how to get there, just keep looking for it, you'll find it, it doesn't take too long to find it because that area isn't as big as it appears to be

and whoever says morrowind is more of an rpg than kotor has obviously never played a pen and paper d20 rpg

go to the start menu and go to the messages and press x to see everything that happens in combat (rolls of the dice, you see how everything is determined by dice), thats straight up pen and paper rpg for ya

kotor is a pen and paper rpg with a nice GUI

"My only gripe so far is that once you start a battle the only way to end it is either defeating your opponent or when you die."

Hit the red button and run, I've done this on a couple fights, I have it set hard as hell, where I run and let my other two people heal up. I think you can probably zone out and lose the mobs too.

"Where are those darn caves on dantoine (spelling? the jedi hideout) you know the ones where you can get the crystals for your light saber?"

**SPOILER**

Out on the planes, head SE

"game seems laggy to me at some points which I really dont like, too many load points (each load time too long). "

It really doens't lag a whole lot. Sometimes the framerates slow for a few seconds. And play off your hard drive, the load times aren't too bad.

"I don't like not being able to control my attacks"

How so? You control what your character is attacking and with what?

Not sure my level, but I just found the third starmap on the water planet.

This game absolutely owns. How many games have the combat, actual combat? As in your swords actually BLOCK theirs, they don't just do the animation. Wait until you get duel lightsabres, along with Bastilla with two(Or double sided) and fighting a lot of shit, or 3 dark jedi's, looks cool at hell.

RELIC
I think the controls are a bit clumsy specifically the fighting and it is a bit choppy and theres not quite enough action for me but even after eventeen hours in a few days I'm still here at work thinking about it.
9th level soldier
3rd level consoler,(had green switched to duel red lightsabors)
RELIC
the cave is in the north east i think, just spend 5 mins and run the map boundry its got two rocks one on either side of the entrence its not to hidden, good luck

Finally finished, little over 42 hrs in...

I'll be starting a new game tomorrow, and this time it's the dark side for me cool.gif

This game is kind of too easy. Still a hell of a lot better than I expected for a last minute rental.

This Week in Xbox:
Knights of the Gold Republic

By Ryan McCaffrey, Assistant Editor, Official Xbox Magazine

Week of July 21, 2003—Having gushed over Star Wars®: Knights of the Old Republic™ in last week's column, be warned: I am now going to continue to do so. It's gone gold now, and many of you will have played it by the time you read this. Don't worry, though, there are no plot spoilers here. Now, with that out of the way…

I can now say that I've beaten the game as an evil Jedi and conquered the galaxy. While our full review will be available in our September issue (out in August), I'll tell you now that the game offers roughly 50 hours of gameplay, if you take on and complete a majority of the side quests. It doesn't stop at 50, however. I have an immediate desire to replay the game following the path of the Light Side, which will likely be another 40 hours or so (shave off 10 since I now know what to generally expect).

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

My opinion of the game as a whole? It belongs in the top three all-time Xbox games, along with Halo: Combat Evolved and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell. From beginning to very end, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic squeezes you with its Force grip and doesn't let go. Even early in the game, before you're granted a single Force power, the story is compelling enough and the party dynamics interesting enough to keep you riveted. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is roleplaying executed to perfection.

I certainly hope the game sells well because, frankly, its extreme high quality deserves massive sales, but also, if a lot of you get out there and pick up this game, then there's a much better chance that developer BioWare will bestow more of its greatness unto the Xbox. Not only that, but the seamlessly cinematic combat and luxuriant locations should give even non-roleplaying-game fans value for their credits.

Thought some folks might like to read it!

Oh great...

Now I am addicted and I don't even like SW that much.
