UPDATED 6/20/04This method will allow you to use a regular memory unit as an action replay (get and put saves from the internet to the xbox) without buying a mega-x key or action replay but rather, a standard xbox memory unit (xbox brand, but read on later in this thread if you want too try some other brand..there are ways too do this..but i have not tried them so of course..i will not include them in my tutorial) and a standard xbox controller. Also, it will let you use your controller on your computer like a usable gamepad..on most emulators and games with controller support, and also, just by making a few modifications, you can use a keyboard and mouse on your xbox.
You'll need,1.Xbox memory unit(THIS TUTORIAL NO LONGER SUPPORTS A NON MS BRAND MEMORY CARD, DUE TO TOO MANY CONFLICTS IN SAVE CORRUPTION..ETC.)
2.Access from your xbox controller to your PC (xbox controller to usb cable, or homebrew cutting the cord and connecting the wires technique, EXPLAINED LATER IN THIS THREAD!!!!)
Here are the steps.1. Get the action replay software LINK 1 is 1.20(Seen problems, reccomended use of 1.05), LINK 2 is 1.05.
1.
http://us.codejunkies.com/downloads/Action...box_1_20_US.exe2.
http://us.codejunkies.com/downloads/Action...nglish1_05).exe2. Download the HID drivers.(XCtrl is now illegal and will NOT be used in this tutorial)
http://image.lik-sang.com/content/xid/xid.zip3. Plug the controller into the PC.(Make sure the memory card is NOT plugged in!!) It will say found new hardware. and direct it to where you installed the HID drivers on your computer. Reboot
4.Plug the memory unit into the controller. It will say found new hardware. Direct it to where you installed the action replay software in the Driver folder. (or if you didnt change it, C:/Program Files/Datel/Action Replay Xbox/Driver
Reboot
5. Double-click on ActionReplayXbox.exe in the action replay folder, and voila, you now own an action replay, cool eh, but you didnt waste like 40 bucks.
--Homebrew Xbox Controller To PC Method--PICS AT BOTTOMYou'll need 1.a usb cord(or cut an old mouse or something and salvage the cord from it,BUT MAKE SURE ITS USB!!)
2.An xbox controller, duh
Here's the steps1.Find a good place at the end of the xbox cord(i did it by where it plugs into the second part of the controller cord) carefully, strip all the wires (about a dimes length)
2.Cut the usb cord and strip all the wires(about a dimes length)
3.Match up wires and twist them together or solder them. except the yellow wire on the xbox controller cord. which you don't need, just snip it off
4.Either tape them together which electrical tape them, or you can tidy it up a little bit and solder them. it still works out fine either way.

Will 3rd party memory cards by companies such as Mad Catz, Interact, and so on work just as well as an official MS card?
vintage_guitar
Jul 19 2003, 12:02 PM
haven't tested but i don't see why they wouldn't.. they must have the same MS signed hardware in order to run on unmodded xboxs with no exploits

Alternative method:
Mad Catz Memory Card Usb ModThis will work on any memory card I just used a Mad Catz Because it was cheap.
(I found one at Game Stop for $8.99 used)

vintage_guitar, what do you mean by 'signed hardware? i assumed that any usb memory stick would be compatible with the xbox as long as the adaptor cable was used.
another question: why would you need the AR software? can't you simply copy+paste the 007/MA zip to the memory stick?
thanks for any replies.
vintage_guitar
Jul 20 2003, 05:43 AM
you need the software in order to have access to whats on it or put stuff on it..unless you build your own, it isn't accessible like a hard drive..you can only access the contents through some kind of program

Instead of cutting the controller cord before the connector to the breakaway cable, would it work if i cut the actual breakaway cable instead and connect that to the USB part? I have a spare breakaway cable so i'd rather cut that than the actual controller cord.

So something like...
Controller -> connector to breakaway -> breakaway cable (cut here) -> wire up to a USB cable
Thanks!

I used the breakaway cable and it worked great for me.It was a mad catz one I got at game stop.

i did that to another one of my controllers (it was a madcatz too lol)

vintage_guitar, i so far have used a regular usb memory stick to transfer some save games from the pc to the stick. still need to buy the usb adaptor, so i haven't transferred them to the xbox yet.
is the format an issue? i think the adaptor i have right now is FAT.

vintage_guitar do you got any pictures at your "homebrew xbox controller to pc method"?
Or do you know any other source that have pictures of that kind of mod?
(My engish isnt so good so I would understand better how to perform the modification with some pictures to guide me)
Edit: Another question came up.
Does it matter wat kind of USB cord I use? My localhardware store sell both USB1 and USB2, what is the diference betwen these?
vintage_guitar
Jul 20 2003, 10:48 PM
umm. i just tore apart an OLD USB mouse so im guessing USB1
as for the pictures..i have found a few(i dont have a digital camera or scanner)
just cut the xbox controller cord, and the USB controller cord and connect the collor coded wires to the matching color(it's quite easy) and snip the yellow one
this is the closest thig to a pic i've seen

Thanks...this works great. One more question for you, though. Is there any way to access my memory card as a drive letter through Windows? That would be sweet...
*edit* Doh...I'm looking at an actual AR save and it's just the zipped directory structure. Nevermind.

Cool! I was thinking of doing the same thing so that I can still use the controller on the xbox.
Just one question, have you tried using a gender changer on the usb end and connecting a usb memory pen to it and letting xbox recognise it?

I dont know, some say that this can be done, xbox memory card and USB key holders with 128MB are the same. Put your memory stick adapter in the other end, and format de device in xbox.
Simple as that.
But, i dont have any to test it right now

This is a nice siimple solution and works very well. if you buy 1 * USB cable and 1 * Xbox controller extension cable you can make a USB adaptor cable for your xbox and a xbox controller to PC usb cable (total cost around $10) cut both cables in half, swap ends and solder them back together again. (I actually had all my parts built all I couldnt work out was how to read the ram cartridge and then yipppe the driver from action replay works......
By the way glad I didn't blow $40 on the action replay kit the site has been down for the past 5 days.

FYI the save games from xbox-saves work with this as well Just download the zip files and save them to your desktop and then drag and drop them into the memory card section of the action replay program.
By the way I think someone should down load the version of action replay and stick on xbins cause I think the manufacturer will pull the code when this gets around.

to get the interact 8meg flash to work with the driver we need to find out the hardware id info..
%S_DeviceDesc1%=_Install1, USBVID_05FD&PID_DBAE
%S_DeviceDesc1%=_Install1, USBVID_05FD&PID_0316
%S_DeviceDesc1%=_Install1, USBVID_045E&PID_0280
%S_DeviceDesc1%=_Install1, USBVID_0738&PID_4507
%S_DeviceDesc1%=_Install1, USBVID_040B&PID_6520
taken from the inf you can see the above cut and paste shows AR driver supports 5 different parts of memorycards
The interact users need to find the hardware id so it can be added to the inf and it should then let us use the driver and work.
Linux users should be able to find the ID easyer than m$ users as it's easyer to question a new bit of hardware in a term
window or even from the log...
i ain`t got linux installed at the mo so i hope someone that has can help us out..
or we poor interact users have to go buy an m$ memory card.. sniff sniff

once u have the 007 evox game save on u'r HDD, then u can just FTP all the game saves through 'Xbox Save Manager' (www.xbox-saves.com) to your xbox HDD (no memory card required after u get 007 evox)!!

as soon as i found the id and added it all was ok. memory card with saves comes up and i can xfer back and forward
try reinstalling
because of the board rules ( NO SLASHES ) the above line is not correct.. between the USB and VID should be a back slash
%S_DeviceDesc1%=_Install1, USB--insert backslash here--VID_05FD&PID_1316
