I've heard talk about grounding the alt d0. I'm going to go through the LPC to get to it so I figure I don't need to ground. But do I still have to using this method? Also are the alt d0 the same for a v1.1 or v1.2 or has it changed?

Why would you think you don't need to ground the d0 because you're lacing the wire through an LPC hole? This doesn't make sense.

Yes you have to ground the D0 point.
And also, sending a wire through the lcp points might not be the best Idea.

ok first off I ground using the screw that came w/ the chip correct? Next why would putting it through an LPC be a bad thing? Should I wrap the part that goes though w/ electrical wire for more insallation?

if you're putting a piece of wire through those hole and somehow it has a little tear in it then it will short out your lcp point and be a pain to fix. It aslo might be hard to get a wire through the lcp if you've got pin headers installed

I agree that it is not a good idea for grounding reasons. The insulation on the wire could tear, the board is fairly rough on the edges.

Gamingguru, there are more LPC points than there are pins on the header, but I am still with you in the don't do it department.

Ok so I should then make the wire longer or stick to a top D0...I've been practicing soldering on an old pcb and have made a few good connections on d0 sized points.

I'm not sure yet, and will test and report back, but a ground is not always a ground as the D0 point may be a floating ground for the XBox. Again, I have not tested but have found that grounding D0 to the LPC ground does not work. I would surmise that the D0 is not an actual ground but a floating one.
I will check as soon as I get a chance and report back if someone does not post sooner.

but aren't the odds just as high of the D0 wire coming
from the bottom of the board could short running across the bottom of the board as it is to thread it up thru one of the unused LPC holes?

If the wire has a crack in it it will just as easly short wherever it is run.
Running it up thru the lpc makes for a very short wire, and lessons the risk of getting pinched when you reinstall the MB.

Grouding D0 to the LPC Ground (Pin 2) does work.

D0 is not a ground, nor is it a floating point. It's a signal line. Tying it to ground forces the signal to Low.
