Hi,
I've got mandrake 9 runnig on my xbox, it runs great but there is one problem. I can't see the whole picture of the desktop. On all sides, about 2 cm's of the screen is cut off. I've tried it on several TV's but they all give the same signal. I've changed the Tv settings in my Xbox to widescreen, and normal but nothing helps. Does anyone have this problem?
Tnx,
Hemmik

I have the same problem, several others on Xboxhackers forum have reported the same. Seems to be a faulty release. Guess we'll have to wait for a patch or new release.

So this is what linux has come to...
The problem you are experiencing is not "a faulty release".. The problem you are experiencing is something you experience every single time you sit in front of your tv, apparently you just didn't know.
Your television does not display the full picture (most don't), no matter what is being fed to your tv, a lil bit of the edges will never make it to the screen...
Linux was never meant to be on tv's, it's meant for pc's with monitors, which don't suffer this same cropping effect.. So what you are seeing is not a fault, it's a side effect of an operating system being ported to hardware it was never meant to run on. In time I'm sure the xbox-linux dev team will adjust the frame buffer to support the "safe zone" (the area of the screen in which your tv actually displays).
Faulty release.. Heh... Man that erks me.

LOL!
This is why the newbies accuse the non-neophytes of being cynical.
A few hundred of these posts will make us so!

WiKKiD & opjose,
Thanks for your excellent yet condescending explanation. I'm truely sorry that myself and Hemmik fail to live up to your exacting standards. Being humble newbies and all, I for one will re-bury my head in the sand and leave you to your high greatness.

I, personally have absolutely no problem with newbies.. Frankly I don't come to these forums to ASK questions...
My problem is that you blame the software, when you are well aware that you are newbies.. You call it a "faulty release" when you're fully aware you're not qualified to judge any linux release..
Asking a question is understandable, and probably the only way you'll learn... Saying the software is broken because it doesn't conform to your specific wants will just piss off people who have taken the time to learn how to use the software and make it conform to theirs.
You sarcastic little puke.

Just FYI. I contacted the Mandrake linux team and they too confirmed that this is indeed a fault of this particular release and that it is being worked on. Seems to be a hardware problem that the software failed to account for. So, WiKKiD, please forgive my coming across as a newbie, I really have several years of Unix experience but am new to Linux. In Unix you can indeed configure the screen geometry using the "xterm -geomerty..." parameter in one of the configuration files. You can do the same in Linux, Just not the Xbox version. I was inquiring about what filename to edit. I really did do my homework before asking, so there was no call for your rudeness.

Heh, you email a developer directly to ask them about something that had already been answered for you by myself, and consider ME rude?
It's people like you that make developers quit releasing cuz they're sick of nearing from people with useless questions.
Believe it or not, you're not that important, you had your question answered, and yet felt the need to disturb thr guru's providing the software.. I think you need to figure out who the rude one here is, genious.

I spoke with Mike on the development team before I posted to this group. It took him a day to get back to me. Let's just drop this whole thread, shall we? You ain't gettin under my skin. Your on ignore.

Haha, you hurt my feelings so now you're on ignore..
Go msg an admin complaining why don't ya? You're obviously THAT important...
Oh, and the name dropping, acting like you know the dev.. Real leet, sparky.

Actually you weren't getting blasted by me believe it or not.
I do get into the "it's broken" or "it's copy protected" discussions every single day, so I always have to laugh whenver the first accusation is that the release, program or software is at fault.
In some rare cases it actually -IS- (see the thread about "can't connect to Linux" in this forum) which is most enlightening.
I was laughing because I had managed to follow Wikkid down a trail of very similiar postings. Where I was responding one post right behind him on varous threads.
Yours came up in the queue as well.
Wikkid had also been helping out a bunch of people and was visibly tired of all the similiar "it's copy protected", "this is broken", "what's wrong with the xxxx" posts.
Condecending, yeah I guess so. But would one expect otherwise when the first thing out is "it's broken" and no statement of developer confirmation, etc. indicating that you actually MIGHT know what you are doing (which frequently others don't) in making the assertion?

Ummm. So back to the screen size. My TV (like most) crop the borders. Is there a know way to 1. Adjust the Xbox video signal to shrink the image, or 2. make Linux only use a smaller portion of the screen? Or some other way (besides XBOX-VGA) to see what can't be seen. Thanks

I see this is a hot topic - I'm replying to myself. Anyways, I did figure out a workaround. It did involve hacking my TV. Most new tvs have a service menu where you can adjust things like V/H size and position just like a monitor. In my case the service menu was rather hard to navigate but it worked. Try looking up your tv model on a search and the words 'service menu' or 'serviceman mode'. Beware, you can mess up your TV so use caution.

I am begging the mod quest and I definately want linux to be a part of it. I am going to assume that I can adjust the display settings in xf86config. I am especially worried about this since I have a HD monitor and want to run at least at 960x540p if 1920x1080i isn't possible. I know Geforce cards suck at interlaced but I assume that this one is better since it is made to run on tvs.

I just got linux installed onto my xbox using the (How to Install Linux on your XBOX, Boot it from EVOX menu and keep the contents of your F Drive (v0.1))TUTORIAL, and I can't seem to get past STEP 4. It tells you to connect to the internet and update linux. I've been trying everything but the connection keeps failing. I have pinged (Ping –c 4 google.ca). This works, but i still can't update my linux. This stuff is all new to me. Someone please help me with this.

I'd keep trying...sometimes the apt get servers are down. There was also a huge fire at one of the main debian ftp mirrors. I don't know if it was related.

the fire that you're referring to doesn't matter in my case. i too can ping google.ca, but can't connect to the internet to update. i even went to
http://xbox-debian.linux.pt where there is an ftp which i can access via my computer.. however, my xbox can't. my xbox gets the ip address, then stops usually with a time out error, any suggestions? thanks!

Are you behind a linksys router or some type of firewall? It might be a passive vs active ftp issue. See if you can connect from a pc behind the firewall NOT in PASV mode and try downloading a package.
