WARNING: This is an ultimate newb post. You will see stupid questions asked and pure confusion. Read ahead at your own risk. I know, I read the pinned thread, but even with that handy comparison table, I still can't tell the difference. I know one thing, I either want a Matrix or the Chameleon (or both), but I don't see why you wouldn't get a chameleon instead of a Matrix. And what does putting a Chameleon on the Matrix do? Should you just use the Chameleon with the adapter? I have a v1.0 Xbox (made in October 2001) and I don't want to solder at all. Could I just get the Matrix? What would I need the Chameleon for? All I want to do is install EvoX, CommanderX, and Xbox Media Player on it. Is 256 BIOS large enough for those programs to run? Do I really need 1024 (1 MB)? I also want to be able to flash from my computer, so wouldn't i need the programmer that only comes with the Matrix?? I know I'm just a stupid newb, but I've been looking all over the internet, over xodus-chip.com and other forums and just can't seem to find a clear-cut answer. Any help, and I will bow to you. Thank you for hopefully solving this confusion of mine.
Edit: I just read the install guide of the CHameleon and it sounds like with the Chameleon and the Solderless adapter that I could install that as the only mod chip without any soldering. Would it still have all the features of the Matrix?

Just because the chameleon is so much cheaper than a matrix, I would get a chameleon alone and just learn how to solder. d0 may be a little difficult, but if you're really that worred you can probably just stick 30 guage wire into it and tape it over. The matrix was very easy to install (I started out with one.. got it for free from a friend who wanted help installing it since he had two.) once I figured out some tricks to getting d0 aligned. If your needs are that simple, the matrix will serve its purpose.
Hm.. my friend's Xbox is smoking.. Good luck making a choice.

Double posting? I haven't double posted at all. And I think both would be really inconvienent.
Also, you don't need to solder with Chameleon's solderless adapter do you??

I've taken computer electronics at college, I know how to solder, but don't want to short-out my Xbox. I don't appreciate people laughing at me and saying to ship it to someone. Look, I just can't find a clear explanation and it's not like it's "general knowledge." According to xodus.com, the solderless adapter (note, solderless) does not require soldering if you just use the Chameleon. Now, if you attach the Chameleon to a Matrix, then yes, you have to solder. Here is a picture of it in case you don't know what you're talking about:

So with that solderless adapter, you still need to solder? Doesn't make sense at all and on the front page of
Xodus-Chip.com it talks about how great this solderless adapter is.
Why can't people just answer my question and not tell me to ship it somewhere *sigh*

Wait, are you all saying that the question was so entirely stupid that of course it doesn't require soldering because it's solderless? Is that why you're laughing??

Crap it all! I just saw this. Was this why you were laughing at me? Because you need to have the Matrix already installed to use the Chameleon as a solderless adapter, I got the following from
this website:
Solderless Adaptor (pure matrix add-on no soldering required)
- Mode 1 1x1Meg
- Mode 2 2x512k
- Introducing Mode2.5 2x512k with STEALTH TECHNOLOGY
- Mode 3 4x256k
- Mode 4 1x256k (+1x512k software selectable)
- Plus modes 1-3 of original Matrix still apply

I thought I was starting to catch onto this modding stuff.....but readin these posts has made me more stupid!! Why the hell would you put a mod chip on top of another mod chip?? The cham and the matrix do basically the same thing right?? Do you get super haxor powers from adding them together????

If you do not plan on using xbox live then no, you dont have to solder. Just use the solderless thingy. If you do want to use live, then you will have to solder 2 wires to the chamelon chip ( real ez, nice big tabs fo you to solder to) and the other ends to to the P and E wires "power and eject". You dont have you dont have to solder those ends. You can find ways to do it without soldering! I hope that helps a bit!

Can't the Chameleon be put in Mode 3 with the solderless adapter so you can use Xbox Live without it recognizing it. I heard it had a stealth mode that was made for this.

You only need to solder if you want the chip to be disabled for XBLIVE. Besides that, the chip is solderless.
Prophetz said this above your last post FFS (English not your 1st language?).

1 - Why shouldn't anyone buy a Matrix?
"Why the hell would you put a mod chip on top of another mod chip?? "
2 - Ok, from the site where it is sold (easybuy 2000) it doesn't seem clear that you should own both a Matrix and a Chameleon, so i figure you could get only the Chameleon and the solderless adapter to get an Xbox modded.
Am i right?
PS> I am a newbie in this Xbox modding stuff, and it doesn't seem clear to me what to get to just play backups from dvdr and still be able to go Live with original games...

It seems like the only point of stacking them is if you're upgrading from a Matrix and you don't feel like uninstalling it.
I still need someone to make the Xbox thing clear to me. You mean that the Chameleon, when put directly into the xbox with the solderless adapter, is detected by Xbox Live even when in Stealth mode?? That makes no sense to me. Please explain :-P

DJ Hoyt, you are a fu<kin' idiot (plain and simple). It was mentioned 2 or more times (once by myself) on this very topic AND YOU ARE STILL ASKING THE SAME QUESTION!!!!!!
Maybe instead of taking that electronics course in college, you should have applied for the Critical Thinking course.
ALLOW ME TO REPEAT IT AGAIN!!!!!!!!
With the solderless adapter, it WILL BE SOLDERLESS!!!!
If you're using the solderless adapter and want to go onto XBlive you NEED TO SOLDER 2 WIRES, so the chip can be disabled (there is no stealth mode, this is not a PS1).
The reason for a Matrix and a Chameleon combo was to make the Chameleon solderless, but now since there is the solderless adapter, there is no need for this combo.

Excuse you? That was really uncalled for. Anyways, now that you've explained it clearer, I get it. But when you solder these two wires to disable it the chip, how do you undo that if you want to enable the chip again? And yes, stealth mode was mentioned in the ad for the Chameleon. Here is a direct copy paste from the user manual PDF. I am not an idiot, I've just read a lot of information.
Mode 2 (2x512 + Stealth)
The flash space of the Chameleon is split into 2 equal parts of 512k each. Again you can pre select your desired boot bank by setting the bank dip switches. A special case is entered into when Dip 4 is turned ON, this is Stealth Mode, here the on board controller of the Chameleon will boot from Bank 1 and then switch over to Bank 2 automatically. Thus the only bios that can be “seen” after boot is the one in Bank 2.
This is what I meant by stealth mode, but it looks like it doesn't refer to live, but I at least proved you wrong in one area that there is a stealth mode.
I also heard you could disable the Chameleon so it couldn't be seen by xbox live by using EvoX. Do you know anything about that?

Ummm... guys??
This thread absolutely killed me!!!
But enough confusion. Here's the deal.
Mast3r Ch13f was almost 100% right in what he said above... However, you can completely disable the Chameleon through software (in this case EvolutionX). You do not need to solder the Power and Eject wires...
If you buy the Cham. with the solderless adapter, then the install will be solderless!! Screw the adapter in place and plug the Cham. on top of the adapter... Voila!
Then add the appropriate lines to your evox.ini that will allow you to disable the Chameleon (boot from TSOP) or flash the Chameleon, or boot from any of the 4 Banks of the Chameleon.
Reboot... and be happy.

no need to solder to disable for live

It's cool people like you that really help =) Thanks! Now, where could I get this code to add to the evox program? If it's on xbox-scene.com, could I get the link to the tutorial? Because if I could just install the chameleon, seal my xbox, and forget about it, that would be great =)

He confirmed my theory!!
PS, you can get the evox.ini code at the same store that you buy the XBOX case sealant.

Using the Chameleon as a Matrix add-on increses the size of the bios you can install from 256k(matrix) to 1 meg. If you just slap the Chameleon onto the solderless adapter, you get everything you want a lot easier. And as long as you use the adapter, there is ABSOLUTELY no soldering.
